1 December 2017 Highdown Sport and Leisure Christmas Term Aspire & Achieve News Christmas is already upon us and we are starting to enjoy the festive season, celebrating with family and friends. Whilst we all love a good feast and party it often results in the firm New Year s resolutions to get fit and lose weight, so it s not surprising that many people struggle to maintain a healthy focus in December. We can all identify with the following at this time of year. I m too busy with the Christmas preparations to fit exercise into my day I love Christmas but I know I overdo the eating and drinking I ll make up for it in January and amend the effects of the festivities. Let us help you maintain that focus over the festive season with the extended opening hours over the holidays and bring along the family for the public swim sessions. January 2018 we are bringing yoga by Kate Cullum in house. Such as we love yoga and all the benefits it brings Kate has agreed to join our team. So make sure you come along and try out the class. 3 Exercise of the month Instructions for a Side Plank 1.Start on your side with your feet together and one forearm directly below your shoulder. 2.Contract your core and raise your hips until your body is in a straight line from head to feet. 3.Hold the position without letting your hips drop for the allotted time for each set, then repeat on the other side. Benefits Core Strength: This pose works your core to a huge extent. Strengthens Arms and Wrists: A side plank requires you to balance on one arm, so this is a great pose for strengthening your shoulders, wrists, and arms. Strengthens Legs: A side plank is really a full-body pose. Improves Balance. Improves Concentration.

5 We are a local club run by experienced Instructor, Master Nazim Gokcezade (6 th Degree Black Belt), with thirty years of experience and has been teaching Tang Sou Dao for the past twenty years at Highdown Sports Centre. Master Nazim teaches traditional Martial Arts in a family friendly atmosphere, with students aging from five upwards. All are welcome and can train at their own pace. With us, you will learn effective blocks and strikes, advanced kicking foot work, evasion, hip and short range power punching, physical fitness, self- confidence and discipline. Classes are run non-stop throughout the year with no breaks for half term or summer holidays apart from Christmas Day and New Years Day.
