The weight of what recently happened at a Florida school is compounded by a school shooting in Kentucky that happened in January, less than a month prior. In that tragedy, two fifteen-year-olds were killed and another eighteen injured. The senseless loss of life has my heart aching for their loved ones. As such, I have done a lot of research over the past week. You see, folks, I don t remember these kinds of incidents when I went to school. I m sad to say, I believe it s an issue of growing concern. I ve long suspected that cyber-bullying contributes to mental illness. I ve also long believed that violent, and ever more realistic, video games desensitize our youth to the horrors of taking a life. Video game producers tell us that folks like me are wrong. As to cyber-bullying, there have been many a documentary and study done that reinforce my belief that they do, indeed, contribute to mental illness. Let me speak to this one first. From (a ninety-year span), there were a total of 254 children killed and 409 injured through gun violence in schools. The Columbine High School Massacre in 1999 alone was responsible for 13 of those deaths and 21 of those injuries. It was also the first time I realized that our children were not 100% safe. Coincidentally, the 90 s was also the birth of the internet. From (a seventeen-year span), there have been 227 children killed and another 278 injured. At that rate, this century will eclipse the last century by 600%. But we should be so lucky to only see a 600% increase. You see, folks, so far, in this year alone, as I write this, there has been seven shootings totalling 21 deaths and 86 injured. At this pace, we could see 126 deaths and 516 injured by year s end. In other words, these shootings are escalating. When I was young, we had bullies. But when we got home, we were safe. Now, our children can t escape to the sanctuary of home. Why? Because bullies can be in their home as well. Through social media sights, screen shots, and videos, bullies continue to torment their victims. You can t convince me that this doesn t contribute to mental illness. One young man, after being taken into custody was asked why he didn t just shoot his tormentors. Why did he shoot others, as well? His answer? Because they didn t try to help me when I was being bullied. In his mind, even as innocent bystanders, they sided with the bullies. Now, let s talk violent video games. Online game producers are under ever increasing pressure to create realistic graphics. Some, would rival special effects of horror movies. But there s a difference between seeing graphic violence on a movie screen and a video game. You see, folks, although television and movies have been scrutinized as a cause for desensitizing our children, our children do not direct the content. However, with video games, they do have direct control. The games reward them for acts of violence by elevating them to higher levels or accumulating more points. Now, for most, this would be simple entertainment. But add some mental illness, a reason to seek revenge, or a cause to defend, and what you have is a child with a very volatile mind set. Mental illness doesn t leave visible scars. How do you fight a disease you can t diagnose through a blood test? I implore every parent to sit down with their children at least once a week to listen. Let them talk just listen. Ask to play video games with them, so that you can actually see what they are playing. When seeing a violent television show, explain to them how real life is nothing like television or movies. Reaffirm this often. Keep them active. Sitting in darkness on social media or online games leads to drama and depression. Heck, even adults are susceptible to drama and depression when they spend too much time online. Most of all sit with them and get their feelings on tragic events. You never know, they may open up about friends showing warning signs that you can bring to the attention of their parents or teachers. Saturday March 17, Annual General Meeting Rescheduled March 8 th at 1:00pm Special resolution to amend the bylaws Age On my 40th birthday, I waltzed out of my bedroom dressed in an old outfit I dug out of the back of the closet. I wore this on my 30th birthday! I guess that means my wardrobe is ten years old, I said to my husband, hoping he d take the hint and buy me some clothes as a present. Or, he offered instead, it means when you were 30 you had the body of a 40-year-old. Circus The usual crowd of small boys were gathered about the entrance of a circus tent in a small town one day, pushing each other and trying to get a glimpse of the interior. A man standing near watched them for a few minutes then, walking to the ticket-taker, he said with an air of authority, Let these boys in, and count them as they pass. The man did as requested, and when the last one had gone in he turned and said, Twenty-eight, sir. Good, said the man, smiling as he walked away, I thought I guessed right. Brianne Tutt s number one fans - her grandparents, Ed and Barb Barkley, catching up with Here s the Scoop in between their granddaughter s races in PyeongChang. We can t get much more Airdrie than this representing Canada at the Winter Olympics! Brianne Tutt, a long-track speed skater, was born and raised in Airdrie. Her grandparents, Ed and Barb Barkley, have also called Airdrie their home for over 50-plus years. Brianne represented Canada not just in PyeongChang a few short days ago, but also was in Sochi in She makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck each time I watch her. For us to receive this photo was such a true treat!! If you do not know Brianne s story, it is one of sheer determination. She represents every positive adjective in the Webster s dictionary, but to me, determination is number one. Back in 2012, while at a practice at the Calgary Olympic Oval, Brianne was waiting at the start line when another skater literally slammed into her. Brianne suffered serious injuries in the crash including a broken neck, collar bone, hearing loss and a concussion. When she was in hospital, doctors told her there was a possibility that she may never walk again. However, miraculously, our Airdrie Speed Skater was back on skates and even competed in the Sochi Winter Games. Now, that s determination! Thank you to Bonnie and Dave, and of course, Brianne, for taking the photo op and sending it to us. Congrats, Brianne, on your achievements! 11 Farm The story is told of a farmer who lived on the same farm all his life. It was a good farm with fertile soil, but with the passing of years, the farmer began to think, Maybe there s something better for me. He set out to find an even better plot of land to farm. Every day he found a new reason for criticizing some feature of his old farm. Finally, he decided to sell. He listed the farm with a real estate broker who promptly prepared an advertisement emphasizing all the many advantages of the acreage: ideal location, modern equipment, healthy stock, acres of fertile ground, high yields on crops, wellkept barns and pens, nice twostorey house on a hill above the pasture. When the real estate agent called to read the ad to the farmer for his approval prior to placing it in the local paper, the farmer heard him out. When he had finished, he cried, Hold everything! Add noodles and return water to boil. Boil until soft, about 8 minutes. Drain and reserve noodles. Bring chicken stock, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, lemon grass, and green onions to a boil in a large pot. Reduce to a simmer; cook for 10 minutes. Stir in the chicken, bean sprouts, and bok choy. Cook pho until heated through, about 5 minutes. Divide the cooked noodles between 2 large bowls. Pour pho over noodles; serve immediately. Tip: To prevent pasta from sticking to bottom of pan, add to rapidly boiling water and immediately stir. Continue to stir occasionally during cooking time.
