2 The Marketing Manager PROPOSAL FOR SICKLE CELL MARATHON Dear Sir / Madam RE: INVITATION TO PARTNER IN THE 2ND EDITION SICKLE CELL RUN 2016 The Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) is the regulatory body for Pharmacists in Uganda. A statutory body established by the Pharmacy and Drugs Act (1970) and cap 280 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The body is governed by the Council whose mandate is to secure the highest practicable standards in the practice of Pharmacy. In pursuit of its mandate and as part of its corporate social responsibility, PSU has partnered with Sickle cell Association of Uganda (SAU) to organize the 2nd PSU Sickle cell run scheduled for Sunday the 25th of September 2016 at Kati Kati grounds Lugogo starting at 7:00am. In Uganda, statistics reveal that 30,000 children are born with sickle cell disease every year, but unfortunately 70-80% die before their 5th birthday. The current sickle cell prevalence study conducted by Ministry of Health from February 2014 March 2015 shows that 17% of Ugandans have a sickle cell trait and 2% have the sickle cell disease. The year s marathon will be the biggest Pharmaceutical sector event of the year as Pharmacist in Uganda & around the world commemorate the World Pharmacist s day with plus runners. Proceeds from the sickle cell run shall go towards the construction of the Sickle cell center in Namalere Kawanda. 3 PROPOSAL FOR SICKLE CELL MARATHON 2016 About The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) Marathon Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda will this year host the 2nd edition of the Sickle cell Marathon. The Marathon is the flagship project for our Rational use of drugs initiative that aims to provide Pharmaceutical professional services to sensitize the public on the dangers of irrational use of medicines resulting in drug resistance. Screening, counselling and equiping the general public with information will be done. Last year s event was successful as it attracted over 500 participants from all walks of life. The objectives of the marathon are to: To raise funds towards the construction of a 24 hour sickle cell centre at Namalere Kawanda. To promote rational drug use in sickle cell treatment by providing professional pharmaceutical services supervised by the society. To stimulate & magnify the awareness of sickle cell disease and its prevention across Uganda; and Create a community event for everyone s enjoyment; The marathon intends to achieve all the above objectives as statistics reveals that more than 33,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease every year, 80% of whom die before celebrating their fifth birthday due to lack of treatment and ignorance on the part of their caretakers and every minute Sickle cell disease claims a life of a child in Uganda. In pursuit of its corporate social responsibility, we have partnered with sickle cell Association of Uganda to create massive public awareness of the disease by oganising an annual event to encourage rational use of medicines by the patients and also contribute towards access to proper medicine and treatment. This year, we have maintained two distinct races as follows: 10km road race for men and women 5km Family Fun Run

Phone: / Website: Operating Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm SERVICES ON ROUTE Timing Stations Timing clocks will be placed at the start and finish points. Water, Medical and Toilet Stations Water, Medical and Toilet Stations will be combined and located At the start & finish point All stations will be clearly marked by signs placed at the station and signs placed 200m before the station. Water Water will be supplied in 600ml bottles with the tops off. Take water whenever you get the chance. First Aid First Aid Stations will be manned by Doctors/Nurses. Ambulances Ambulances will be strategically positioned on the route. Marathon proceeds: All proceeds for this year s marathon will go toward the construction of a 24 hour centre with 3 levels comprising of Association Head Offices, Sickle cell care centre, Laboratory, Library, conference room, guest houses, nursing station, doctor's room, visiting doctor or nurse s room, medical & nurse students room, record room, computer room, day care wards, Pharmacy room, consultation room and counselling rooms for patients among others. This centre will address the highlighted problems below: i. There is only one main Sickle cell clinic in Uganda not sufficient to the affected population in different regions ii. The one clinic is a day care centre, due to untimely emergencies thus, there is no centre to attend to clients on a 24 hours basis. iii. Often there is patient over flow with lack of any emergency medical equipment at the available sickle cell day care centre. iv. The paediatric and adult patients are all seen in the same room and by a paediatrician. v. Sickle cell patients get admitted to general wards yet they are prone to infections. vi. Counselling is done less often since the clinic does not have provision for counselling, yet it is very necessary and is done voluntarily by SAU staff in the waiting area. 31 vii. Infrastructure of the clinic at Kawanda - Namalere Bombo Road is not sufficient for the out and inpatient flow viii. There is low free sickle cell screening due to low awareness and some cases are preventable if free screening is availed.
