APV 2012, ShangHai, China Oral Vaccination against Ileitis in Pigs: Methods and Efficacy Data Shyuan Seah BVMS Technical Services Veterinarian Swine ANZ
Introduction: Ileitis Lawsonia intracellularis Clinical and subclinical forms Increased size variation Increased feed use Increased antibiotic use
Oral Vaccines Welfare No needles Less stress Safer for workers More time efficient
4 Steps to Success 1. Correct diagnosis Enterisol Ileitis ELISA 2. No antimicrobials for 7 days around vaccination 3. Correct timing of vaccination 4. Correct vaccine administration
How to Vaccinate: 3 Methods
Seroprevalence Pre-Vaccination Planning Vaccinate early: Build adequate immunity before infection Ileitis example: Vaccinate at least 6 weeks before seroconversion Seroconversion after infection Vaccination Infection Weeks of Age
3 Vaccination Methods or or Drench: Administer orally to each pig Proportioner: Use the drinking water system Trough: Use drinking devices
Vaccine Administration: General Information Antimicrobials kill the vaccine Withhold all antimicrobials (feed and/or water and/or injection) at least three days before vaccination on the day of vaccination at least three days after vaccination (longer preferred) Optimize the timing of vaccination according to the farm medication vaccination wean antibiotics days antibiotics free 3 days antibiotics free antibiotics
1 Vaccination by Drench No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Reconstitute the vaccine by adding the provided diluent to the vaccine cake Mix well gently then Attach the vaccine vial to the top loader dosing gun (50 doses) OR Transfer reconstituted vaccine into a clean backpack drench container (>100 doses) Administer 2mL of reconstituted vaccine per pig by oral drench and ensure swallowed Use within 4 hours of reconstitution
Vaccination by Proportioner No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Pre-vaccination Set inclusion rate on the proportioner between 3 to10% (depending on type) Check the system for function and leakages Rinse the system with clean water and ensure nil residue of antimicrobials
Calculate Water Consumption No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Pre-vaccination Obtain volume of stock solution required by measuring uptake of water Measure the amount drawn through the proportioner at the Same period of time (4 hours) Same time of day as the proposed time of vaccination on the next day 10L 6L 4L
Vaccination by Proportioner No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Vaccination Day Use skim milk for the volume of stock solution required over the 4-hour period Mix the required number of reconstituted Enterisol Ileitis doses into skim milk stock solution Connect to proportioner and set inclusion rate for at least 3%
Vaccination by Proportioner No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Vaccination Day Turn water supply valve(s) to direct water through the proportioner Bleed the drinkers until milk-colored water appears After 4 hours, confirm that all the stock solution has been consumed
Vaccination by Proportioner Example 1000 piglets Average weight of 7 to 9 kg Each drinks approx 1200mL /day = 200mL/4 hours L Vaccine solution = 1000 doses vaccine reconstituted with diluent (2L) and added to the mix of 6L (200L x 3%) skim milk The proportioner needs to be set at least at 3%
Vaccination by Trough No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Permanent fixed or removable troughs/drinking devices Always use watertight and clean rinsed troughs, free from antimicrobial or disinfectant residues Pre-measure the water consumption of the pigs over a 4-hour time frame prior to vaccination day
Vaccination by Trough No antimicrobials from 3 days before to 3 days after vaccination! Vaccination Day Turn off the piped water supply to the pigs being vaccinated Include skim milk (30mL/L) into measured volume of drinking water Add the required number of reconstituted Enterisol Ileitis doses Deliver through drinking devices over 4 hours
After the Vaccination
Check Vaccine Uptake After 4 hours, ensure that the mixture has been consumed Record any unusual occurrences Restore water supply at the end of vaccine administration It s as easy as having a drink, mate!
Key Take Home Messages Pre-measure 4-hour water consumption Reconstitute vaccine immediately prior to use Seven days antimicrobials-free period Vaccinate at appropriate age prior to seroconversion
