1 RURAL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INSURANCE PROGRAM FUNDING SUMMARY FISCAL YEAR 2012 The 77th Texas Legislature passed House Bill 3667 in 2001, creating the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Insurance Program. The program reimburses eligible volunteer fire departments for the purchase of workers compensation insurance, death insurance, and disability insurance. Funds for the program are derived from a 2% tax on the retail sale of fireworks. The Texas A&M Forest Service conducted open enrollment for the program from January 1, 2012 through August 31, The departments listed below were approved for a reimbursement grant of $96.00 per firefighter, not to exceed their total cost of coverage. Each department was issued a Letter of confirming the grant. Qualified volunteer fire departments were encouraged to apply. Applications were approved and funded on a first come-first served basis until all grant funds were allocated.
