8 PLENARY I: 8:45-9:45 am In the Hands & Voices Beginning: the Genesis of Genius Before Hands & Voices, there was only chaos and darkness for many families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. One hundred years of methodology wars had left family support in no-man s land. From that void, an idea was born: What if the parents were in charge and support without bias was the law of the land? Two decades later, the power of an idea whose time had come created a completely new landscape in the fields of EHDI, Deaf Education, and Family Support. This retrospective sessions reviews the lessons learned, and what they are still teaching us today. The degree to which a person has control of their lives is associated with Independence and ultimately more positive outcomes. We will take a close look at how to help our children/students build that independence through self-determination and advocacy. We will also, look at the self-directed IEP and provide strategies for parents and service providers to engage children/students into becoming more self-determined advocates. Trainer: Janel Frost (MI), Bambi Lambert (ND) and Carla Kelley (MI) TRACK TWO: Supporting Latino Families The Spanish-speaking population has dramatically increased over the past ten years in the United States. This drastic influx of new families demands the need for heightened awareness of their cultures and traditions. Deaf & Hard of Hearing families of Latino descent face challenges that differ from other subpopulations. Language barriers, parental citizenship status, and the economical disadvantages faced by Latino families will require more effort from their service providers. Identifying specific considerations when building relationships with Spanish-speaking families is crucial. Trainers: Yiesell Rayon (CA) and Mariana Barquet (IN) TRACK THREE: Upcoming Legislation and Initiatives: What to Know and What to Do We ll discuss current and upcoming legislation and national initiatives that impact children who are deaf and hard of hearing. 12 BREAKOUT SESSION E 10:00 am 11:00am TRACK ONE: I thought I was helping Trail Ridge This presentation will discuss the theory of learned helplessness and apply it as a possible reason that some deaf students are not successful in school. We will break down the psychology behind learned helplessness and the reasons deaf students are prone to classroom failure based on this theory. Then we discuss various supports and approaches to help deaf students become self-advocates and independent learners through the use of executive functioning skills. Trainer: Tabitha Belhorn (OH) TRACK TWO: Hands & Voices League of Heroes : The Superpowers Within Us All! Learn how MN Hands & Voices connects children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their siblings to role models at events. Role models are trained in the H&V mission /philosophy and our unique method to creatively infuse adults into the fun. By taking the persona of superheroes, donning capes, handing out superpower trading cards, and sharing how they discovered their special powers, role models teach the children traits to guide them into emotionally strong adults. With the O.U.R. project in mind, the goal is to keep our kids safe and foster resiliency. Downloadable logos and trading cards available! Trainers: Laura Libby (MN) and Candace Lindow-Davies (MN) TRACK THREE: Blue Spruce Strengthen Your Advocacy Know How! How to Advocate for Your Student without Jeopardizing Your Job Train the trainer session to teach educators how to advocate. Have you ever been in the position where your students IEP team is making a decision you disagree with? It happens all the time. More often than not an educator will sit back and not voice their concern for fear of losing their position in the district. This session will discuss techniques you can use to advocate for a student in a manner that does not threaten your position. Learn the right approach to use when it comes to disagreeing with the team. Suggested changes in behavior and involvement can make a difference in your ability to advocate for your students. Trainer: Andrea Marwah (IL) TRACK FOUR: The Common Ground Project: A Collective Impact The Common Ground Project is a joint effort involving leaders from the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD) and OPTION Schools, Inc. These two professional organizations have committed to come together and discuss how to support deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families. Historically, leaders for special schools serving children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing have not had a united message articulating what supports and systems are needed to meet students educational needs. Leaders from each organization have come together to ensure that children under the age of three have services (both center and home-based) from specially qualified providers. The lack of such services and qualified providers is a nationwide problem, as is the rigidity in some states around the provision of only home-based (or natural environment ) services. Children identified as deaf or hard-of-hearing require immediate, specialized, family-centered services, but often this does not occur in a timely manner or at all. Providing a common voice addressing key student rights and services will help professionals trying to navigate the system for deaf/hard-of-hearing children from identification through graduation from high school. Facilitated by: Rick Hauan Panel Members: Jane Mulholland, Former Superintendent, Washington School for the Deaf; David Geeslin, Superintendent, Indiana; Barbara Hecht, Director of Clarke School Program, Boston, MA; Meredith Berger, Director, Clarke School Program, New York City, NY
13 11:00am 11:15am Break PLENARY III: 11:15am 12:15pm Support Stewardship: Self-Care & Sustainability In this interactive closing plenary, Jessica Dallman, MA LPCC, will lead us through some of the common pitfalls (and underutilized resources) of working in a role that supports other people. Research will be rapidly synthesized and applied into experiential activities, hopefully leaving you with some ideas to chew on and some skills in your pocket as you leave for home. Trainer: Jessica Dallman 12:15pm - 12:30 Closing - H&V Naming Circle - The one & only signature H&V closer Safe Travels! HANDS TM VOICES & - 9 -
