Coordinators will have the opportunity to work in small groups according to their current needs and structure. The Wisdom Among us is a long standing value of H&V, and you ll get it here! PRESESSION II: H&V Guide By Your Side GUIDE Session Facilitators: TBD This session will be for any H&V parent guides who serve in their GBYS programs and H&V Chapter parents who serve as parent-to-parent support on an ongoing basis within their chapters. Join in this in-depth, thoughtful training to help develop practical skills in supporting families in their journey. 3 THURSDAY, June 21 st, 2012 GENERAL CONFERENCE BEGINS 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm REGISTRATION Registration is open from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm, but it s recommended that you arrive by 5:00 pm at the latest so you can join in on dinner and evening activities. Poster Set up The Gorge Room Poster Session Theme: How I find Balance This year s poster session is all about YOU! Make a poster about yourself, your family, your role at H&V, and what you like to do in your life that others might not know about you. Are you a model for balance or a cautionary tale? Have fun with this. A prize for the most creative poster will be awarded! (chapters may do one together, or separately as individuals) 6:00 pm 7:00 pm DINNER Join us for a light meal together as we arrive and settle in. 7:00 pm 9:00 pm MIXER & Poster Session Don t miss this annual get to know you event. Beyond our expertise as parents and professionals, we all have personal and other skill sets and passions we bring to the table. In an exuberant and joyful perspective, be prepared to explore beyond the bounds of our traditional labels which brings an amazing balance in the depth and breadth of who we are together. 5 Note: This year s breakouts are broken into three tracks: 1. TRACK ONE: These sessions are basic courses designed for first timers to the conference, start up, provisional, and newer chapters. These courses are also good for leaders who want to present this information back in their home chapters and want to observe how to present the information in these courses. 2. TRACK TWO: These sessions are designed for chapters who may be ready for more advanced applications in different content areas. 3. TRACK THREE: These sessions are topical in nature and may be of interest to all participants Attendees may participate in any of the breakouts, and designations are meant for planning purposes and clarification for those attending. 1. TRACK ONE: We Are Hands & Voices Who are we? What are our values and goals of the organization? This basic training takes a look at the overall history, structure and current status of Hands & Voices. This session is one that is designed for chapters to present in their own locales, and the trainers of this session will also talk about how to present this session back in your own regions. Trainers: Helen Cotton Leiser (OR) and Stephannie Stiel (ND) 2. TRACK TWO: Consensus How does your chapter leadership make decisions? What if the issue is controversial and there is diversity of thought? This session will look at the definition, theory and practice of consensus decision making, and provide H&V chapter boards and others some grounding in this topic. Trainer: Tony Ronco (HQ) 3. TRACK THREE: Wholistic Kids Come from Wholistic Parents Continuing the theme from the morning plenary, how do we give the necessary attention to our d/hh children while keeping balance in other facets of our lives? Are our jobs, spouses, hearing children, and personal lives starving for our presence? Where is the balance between doing the right things for a deaf/hh child and keeping grounded as an individual? This session explores some tough terrain with the goal of experiencing a more balanced, wholistic life. Trainer: Leeanne Seaver (HQ)

6 11:15 am 12:00pm PLENARY II LIVING IN BALANCE: As an Organization This panel presentation will draw from the experience from Hands & Voices leadership and will address the challenges and successes of maintaining balance as an organization everything from the modality question to keeping a board engaged and following up on tasks. Understanding the importance of strategic planning, stages of non-profits and the life cycles of boards will also be explored. Strategies learned in this session will also benefit those who are a part of other agencies/organizations beyond H&V. Panel members: Cheryl Johnson, Candace Lindow-Davies, Lisa Crawford, Lisa Kovacs, and TBD Facilitator: Janet DesGeorges 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCH Sit with some new friends and discover what other chapters are doing all over the world! TRACK ONE: Supporting Families without Bias The vanguard, required training for everyone who's just joining our group, or if you re preparing to present this session in your own state and need more time with the topic. Extremely helpful for professionals and parents working with families even if you re not part of Hands & Voices. Also required for GBYS start-ups. Trainers: Karen Putz (HQ and IL) Andrea Marweh (IL) 2. TRACK 2: Know Thyself (and others) This session will be broken up into 2 separate yet complimentary 45 minute presentations. a. What s My Leadership Style? this session will explore what kinds of leadership attributes you have, where your strengths and challenges as a leader lies, and how to use four areas that uncovers your skills to be at your best as a leader. Trainer: Susan Elliott (HQ) b. Interpersonal Styles The second half of this presentation will explore interpersonal styles and the ability to recognize and account for the styles of others in order to build strong relationships and to be a strong leader Trainer: Elizabeth Seeliger (HQ and WI) 3. Track 3: Progressive Hearing Loss Will my child lose more of their hearing? This is often a question new families ask at the time of identification. This session will explore a recent research study at the University of Colorado looking at new information regarding progressive hearing loss in the first seven years of life. Presenter: Dr. Christine Yoshinaga Itano (HQ) 3:00 pm 3:15 pm BREAK VISIT THE EXHIBITORS Finish your Exhibitor Scavenger Hunt and turn in form at registration desk to be entered to receive a prize.

TRACK ONE: Guide By Your Side: An Introduction and Update of Current Programs This session will cover the concept of GBYS and its flexibility in application to states whether focused on Parent Guides in early intervention systems, parentnetworking, and/or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Guides or mentors. GBYS represents the values we have at H&V for direct parent-to-parent support and DHH role models--all who are trained to be unbiased and appropriate in working with families. TRAINERS: Julie Johnson (DE), Christine Griffin(WA) 2. TRACK TWO: Time Management and Capacity: Playing it Smart This session will look at tools to help manage time and make good decisions about prioritization of chapter goals, and playing it smart within the capacity of your current chapter structure. Trainer: Terri Patterson (HQ and GA) 3. TRACK THREE: Taking the O.U.R. Project to the IEP: Ensuring the Safety and Success of our Children H&V has been working on the O.U.R. (to Observe, Understand, and Respond) Children s Safety Project for the last several years. This year, the exploration of our children s success via the IEP process will be explored by examining discussions that can happen in the most important meeting of the year: THE IFSP/IEP MEETING! Practical suggestions for incorporating children s safety needs through measureable goals/objectives families and advocates can bring to the table. Trainers: Harold Johnson (HQ), Sara Kennedy, (HQ and CO), and Chresta Brinkman (CO) 4:30 pm 6:00 pm UP TIME Location: designated areas (announced at lunch) Organizers: Oregon Hands & Voices We need more down time!, the survey says. TRACK ONE: Deaf/HH Infusion: A Look at Beyond the Limits of D/HH Adult Lives and Careers You ve never experienced the topic of D/HH infusion and role models like this before! Hands & Voices recognizes the importance of Deaf/hard of hearing (D/HH) individuals in all aspects of the organization, and its importance in encouraging a family in the journey with their own child. This session will take a creative look at answering the question, Can a deaf/hard of hearing person really do that? Trainers: Karen Putz (IL and HQ) and Anita Dowd (KY) 2. TRACK 2: Systemic Improvement in Education What can H&V chapters do to improve the educational systems within their areas/regions? This session will be explored from the vantage point of two seasoned administrators in education, with experience and expertise working in different models all over the country. How can the role of family involvement and H&V strategy create influence which can lead to successful outcomes for children in education? Come and be a part of the conversation! Trainers: Ruth Mathers (HQ) and Cheryl Johnson (HQ)

10 3. TRACK 3: The Social/Emotional Aspects of DHH Plus A large percentage of families in our organization have a child who is deaf/hard of hearing plus other special needs and/or disabilities. This session will take a look at the unique characteristics of children in the areas of social/emotional development taken from a mom who s been there, and also with her hat on as director for a chapter and GBYS program who will provide strategies to ensure that these families are being served effectively. Trainer: Candace Lindow-Davies 10:00 am 11:15 am PLENARY SESSION III This session is still in Development (but it will knock your socks off) 11:15 am 11:30am BREAK 11:30am 12:30 pm PLENARY SESSION IV The Balancing Act: Hands & Voices Faces the Future with Hope In this closing session of the H&V 2012 Leadership Conference, this session will explore the new landscape in which H&V finds itself as an organization that has achieved phenomenal growth in the last few years. This session will: Celebrate our success and achievements of the past and present Update our current priorities, projects, and structural growth Look ahead with a sneak preview of the next 5 year H&V HQ strategic plan Challenge us to live in Balance: personally and organizationally Presenter: Janet DesGeorges, H&V Executive Director Hands & Voices Naming Circle The one & only, the signature H&V closer Safe Travels!
