5 Wednesday, February 1, :00pm 05:00pm Workshop 1 Fee: $ Robert Horowitz, DDS Surgical Techniques to Enhance Orthodontic & Other Surgical Techniques to Enhance Orthodontic & Other Advanced Surgical Therapies The number and scope of instruments and equipment necessary for optimal diagnosis and treatment has grown exponentially. One of the most critical instruments in surgical armamentarium has been, for over 10 years, Piezosurgery. This micro vibrating, ultra precise, ultra-high tech piece of equipment is used in most of Dr. Horowitz s surgical procedures related to the eventual placement of dental implants. Whether the goal of the initial surgery is atraumatic extraction, ridge split for width augmentation, implant placement, osteotome or lateral approach for sinus augmentation, the Piezosurgical unit has a place. A novel use for this unit is performing corticotomies to assist orthodontic tooth movement. Cases will be shown with both clear aligner and fixed appliance therapy. The addition of Piezosurgery to the group of procedures in PAOO (also called POPA, Wilckodontics) is an important addition to orthodontic therapy and is generally performed by periodontists and oral surgeons. Using surgically enhanced orthodontic therapy, tooth intrusions are more predictable, open bites can be closed more easily, and with hard and soft tissue grafting, arches can be expanded more effectively to get better occlusal schemes and torque roots palatally/lingually to keep the facial surfaces inside the alveolar housing. There are appropriate tips and protocols to make these and other surgical visits (surgical debridement for treatment of peri-implantitis and crown lengthening to name a few) simpler during the procedure and more predictable in outcome. This workshop will demonstrate multiple uses of Piezosurgery. At the end, the participant will have seen both still photos and intraoral videos (through an operating microscope for unparalleled visibility) to familiarize him-or herself with clinical tips that will be usable in many patients. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the jaws is essential for successful treatment of edentulous sites. The presentation will cover evaluation of head and neck spaces, vital structures and sinonasal anatomy of interest to the implant surgeon. A short discussion on incidental findings of importance necessitating further evaluation is also included. Fee: $ Thursday, February 2, :00pm 04:00pm Workshop 3 Fee: $ Istvan Urban, DMD, MD Surgical Techniques to Enhance Orthodontic & Other Perspectives on Vertical and Horizontal Augmentation Vertical and horizontal augmentation presents one of the greatest challenges of bone regeneration in implant dentistry. This is primarily due to the difficulty of the surgical procedure and its potential complications. Patient selection, patient preparation for surgery, precise surgical techniques and postoperative management are the key factors in reducing the rate of bone graft complications. To predictably achieve successful bone augmentation angiogenesis, clot stability and space maintenance should be employed. The SAUSAGE TECHNIQUETM is a minimally invasive and safe approach that is utilized to reconstruct severely atrophied ridges. The choice of grafting materials as well as the long-term crestal bone preservation after ridge augmentation will be presented. Another important factor is flap closure during bone augmentation. The key to achieving wound closure is not only the clinician s ability in obtaining tension free release flap but also good soft tissue quality and quantity. In an attempt to achieve wound closure and hence graft stability, the buccal mucosa are often broadly released, and this often results in a severe apical translocation of the mucogingival line, loss of vestibule and keratinized mucosa (KM). Recent research on vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation as well as soft tissue reconstruction utilizing a collagen matrix CMX will be presented. Utilizing these procedures may lessen the need of harvested autogenous bone and may generally lead to decreased morbidity and therefore increased patient comfort and satisfaction associated with these regenerative procedures.
