1 Spring 2011 President s Message Dr K.H. Lee Dear Fellows &, When I took up the presidency at the end of November 2010, it was nearly Christmas time and, in almost a blink of an eye, it is now the first month in the lunar calendar. Let me wish all of you a peaceful and prosperous Year of the Rabbit. I have been serving in the College Council in various posts since 1993, with only a gap year in 2006, and so have been witnessing the College going from strength to strength. This year, we saw Professor Stephen Wei who is one of our Past Presidents and Dr William Yung who has served continuously in the College Council for 12 years leaving the Council; and we saw Dr Katherine Leung and Dr Rony Cho joining the Council as Council for the first time. The College welcomes Dr SK Chan as the new VP (General Affairs & CPD), Dr Edmond Pow as the new Honorary Secretary, and Dr Robert Ng as the new Censor-in-Chief. Professor Edward Lo and Dr Alfred Tsang have kindly agreed to remain as VP (Education & Examinations) and as Honorary Treasurer respectively. I am looking forward to have a close working relationship with all the Office-bearers and Council. Just like in previous years we have, in January, appointed all the members of our Committees and Specialty Boards for another term. This year the Council has also formed a new House Committee to help looking after the day to day running of the Secretariat which currently has 4 full-time staff members. -1-

2 Last year, we have conducted many Intermediate Examinations jointly with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and admitted 15 new College. Exit Examinations were also being conducted in Endodontics, in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, in Orthodontics and in Paediatric Dentistry and 9 College Fellows were admitted. These 9 College Fellows were admitted by the Academy and added to the list of FHKAM (Dental Surgery). In November 2010 we held a Joint Congress on Implant Dentistry together with the Global Committee on Osseointegration. Gratitude must be extended to Professor Leung Wai-keung for chairing the Local Organising Committee and for organizing such a successful and educational event. In the same month, the College published one piece of important document, Guidelines for the Provision of Dental Implants. This document spells out the training requirements for the different levels of implant treatment, information about the various considerations in placing dental implants, the importance of implant maintenance and documentation as well as the importance of quality assurance. The previous 3-year CME/CPD cycle stipulated by HKAM has ended at the end of Starting from 1 January 2011 there is a new 3-year cycle with a revised set of Principles & Guidelines. The most up-to-date P&G is made available on the College Website and it could be downloaded for reference. Much time and great efforts have been put in by Dr Raymond Lee and his Committee for General Dentistry in organizing the training and examination for the general dental practitioners. The very first diet of the MGD Examination has been conducted on 9 January 2011 and it is an important milestone for the College. Dr Raymond Lee s contribution is much appreciated. More detailed report about the work of the Committee of General Dentistry could be found in another section of this Newsletter. Those Fellows who attended our Conferment and Annual Dinner would have noticed that the College has produced some new College Gowns with eye-catching design. I must thank Dr Robert Ng for his effort in this matter. Finally I wish you all a very prosperous and healthy Dr KH Lee President -2-

11 hip of General Dentistry Dr Raymond Lee Presidents of the two Colleges, Dr. Roch K H Lee of the College of the Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK) and A/Prof. Werner Bischof of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) signed a memorandum of understanding on 5 December The ceremony was witnessed by Dr Joseph C Y Chan (CDSHK) and Dr Suzanne Hanlin (RACDS), with other members of the CDSHK and RACDS Council. The agreement is on the sharing of question bank of the CDSHK MGD and RACDS MRACDS (General Stream) Examination and we look forward to the future collaboration of both Colleges especially in aspects of education and examination. 12 hip of General Dentistry The College held the MGD Part I examination on 9 th January, 2011 (Sunday). 39 candidates attended the examination. Over 30 examiners and invigilators participated in the examination. The examiners have been very helpful in defining the examination policy and validating examination questions. We are also delighted to have Prof. Michael Burrow and Prof. David Manton, who are nominated by the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, as our external examiners. The Committee of General Dentistry would like to thank the Secretariat for their hard work to make our very first diet Part I examination smooth and efficient. The Part I results will be ready by early April. The provisional date for Part II is August, The Committee of General Dentistry will present a full working report on Part I soon. 13 Conjoint Autumn Scientific Meeting Prof. Leung Wai-keung Our 2010 Autumn Scientific Meeting was conjoined with European Association of Osseointegration (EAO) represented by Global Council for Osseointegration titled 2010 Joint Congress on Implant Dentistry was successfully held from November 3 5, 2010 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building. A total of 23 speakers including 12 from Europe, 9 from Hong Kong, 1 from Japan and 1 from Thailand presented in the 3 days conference. The meeting was inaugurated by Prof F Neukam (, GCO), Dr Joseph Chan (President, CDSHK), Dr the Honorable Leong Che Hung (Guest of Honour) and Prof C Hämmerle (President, EAO). There was around average 200 participants per day part-take this 3-days program. Of them 48 were from overseas. The presentations in the 3-days program covered a wide range of topics under six themes related to contemporary science and practice in Implant Dentistry and beyond. The local organizing committee was grateful to industry sponsors namely Geistlich, Henry Schein, Biotech Dental Ltd., Nobel Biocare Asia Ltd., Advance Dental Consulting Ltd., Healthcare Dental Limited and Quintessence. The expert help of CDSHK colleagues Ms Lilian Cheung, Ms Rose Chow, Ms Julia Lau and Ms Sharon Tam were gratefully acknowledged. Feed backs from conference participants were extremely positive. The 2011 Scientific Meeting Committee (SMC) is now actively brainstorming the theme and speakers for the 2011 Spring Scientific Meeting. We are looking forward to bring to our membership interesting and useful CPD experience soon. Any ideas and comments are most welcomed. 15 Visitation Report Dr. K.H. Lee Macau Examination for Consultant in Stomatology The Government of Macau Special Administrative Region, Health Bureau (Governo da Regiao Administrativa Especial de Macau, Servicos de Saude) had requested our College to provide assistance in conducting an examination for the appointment of Consultant in Stomatology. A Consultant in Stomatology Examination Committee (CSEC) was formed since last year as per the law of Macau, consisting of the following members: Dr KH Lee (), Dr Alfred Tsang and Dr SK Chan. After 4 meetings held in Hong Kong, the CSEC conducted the examination (consisting of CV Assessment and Oral Defense) in Macau on 15 February 2011 at the Conde S.
