The first seminar, held on May 24, featured internationally renowned board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist Dr. Dale Miles who is professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and adjunct professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio. More than 100 participating dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and hygiene students attended the seminar on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. Look What s New! Mobile Version of HDS Public Website (deltadentalhi.org) HDS recently launched a new mobile version of our public website for our members. The mobile version allows users to access the most popular features on our website, such as, searching for a dentist and viewing their HDS ID card and their dental benefits. Dr. Dale Miles and Dr. Martin Oishi, faculty member from the UH Department of Dental Hygiene. Dr. Miles discussed the recent controversial study published in Cancer that links dental X-rays to brain meningioma together with indications for cone beam imaging in dental practice, advantages and disadvantages of digital X-ray imaging, and avoiding common X-ray positioning errors. He also discussed basic principles of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) and the 2003 National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) report No. 145 which mandates that dentists examine patients prior to the prescription/taking of X-ray images. Image selection criteria should be based on the clinical examination findings, individual patient risk factors, and dental history and not on a predetermined routine or administrative schedule. The use of rectangular collimation, mandatory use of thyroid collars in children, E or F speed conventional film and the need for establishing a radiation safety/protection program for all dental offices were additional highlights of the program. The next seminar scheduled for Thursday, August 9, will feature Dr. John Suzuki, dean of Graduate Studies, School of Dentistry, and professor of Periodontology and Oral Implantology at Temple University. Please see the enclosed flyer for details. HDS Online: Payment On Preauthorizations for Multiple HDS Plans HDS has enhanced its Pay-On-Preauthorizations (POA) feature for HDS members with multiple HDS plans. Dental offices are able to submit a POA on the primary HDS plan and our system will automatically process any additional HDS plans accordingly. This feature has also been extended to the Benefit Estimator. When converting a benefit estimate into a preauthorization for a patient with multiple HDS plans, dental offices are now able to submit a POA on the primary HDS plan and our system will automatically process any additional HDS plans accordingly.

2 Processing Policies May Differ for Out-of-State Delta Dental Plans When treating out-of-state Delta Dental patients, please remember that while the majority of processing policies are the same for all Delta Dental plans, most Deltas allow their employer groups to negotiate customized processing rules. For example, it is becoming more common on the mainland for some employer groups to cover posterior composites and porcelain crowns on posterior teeth. This means that these services have a maximum plan allowance and the participating dentist cannot charge more than the allowed amount. To ensure that you provide an accurate estimate to your Delta patients, HDS encourages you to submit a preauthorization for services and to contact the appropriate Delta Dental directly for information on benefits. Another difference among the Delta plans is their deadlines to submit claims. HDS accepts claims for services performed within the past 12 months. Other Deltas may stipulate a shorter time limitation for claims submission, such as six months instead of 12 months. To ensure payment, we encourage you to submit your claims promptly. Evidence-Based Plans: Additional Benefits for Many HDS Dental Plans Evidence-based plans allow additional dental benefits for patients with certain medical risk factors. Diabetic patients are eligible for two additional prophylaxis or periodontal maintenance procedures as evidence clearly shows that poorly controlled diabetic patients may be at increased risk for periodontal disease, dental caries and oral fungal infections due to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Untreated or poorly controlled periodontitis may also elevate blood sugar levels which can promote and accelerate atherosclerosis, retinopathy (blindness), neuropathy, and peripheral vascular disease. Pregnant patients may also receive an additional prophylaxis or periodontal maintenance as fluctuation in hormonal levels may promote or accelerate gingivitis and other periodontal problems. Patients over the contract fluoride age limit may be eligible for a fluoride varnish if they have a medical or systemic condition (e.g. radiation therapy, Sjogren's syndrome etc.) that increases the risk for dental caries. The following outlines how to determine if your patient has an evidence-based plan and how to add the required medical risk factors to the patient eligibility. Evidence-based benefits are listed along with the basic benefits structure. Dentists must notify HDS of a patient s health condition or medical risk factor in order for the patient to take advantage of these benefits. Please log on to HDS Online and refer to the Announcements/Tips/Tools section to download instructions on how to add, change or delete a patient s medical condition. For offices that submit paper claims, please include a narrative indicating the patient s medical condition. Please contact HDS Customer Service for more information. Ask HDS If you would like to submit a question, please askhds@hdsonline.org. Q: How do I submit an appeal of a claim? A: A request for appeal of the determination on a claim must be made within 12 months from the date of service. All information in support of the treatment should be included with the request. If no new information is provided, no further appeals will be considered. Appeals can be made via HDS Online or on paper and should include the original claim number and information to support the treatment. Q: How do I correct a claim for a patient with two HDS plans? A: Submit an inquiry through HDS Online on either the primary or secondary claim and HDS will automatically adjust both claims accordingly. New Dentists General Dentists Robert Berger, DDS Jasmin H. El-Gohary, DDS Joon S. Ha, DDS Jeremy J. Oakley, DDS Training: New Staff Orientation HDS offers basic training for front office staff. This one-hour training session is designed especially for dental staff who do not have experience filing dental benefits claims.
