4 Message from the Dean This past Academic Year 2007/08 saw the establishment of the National University Health System (NUHS) in January a joint venture between NUS and Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH). NUHS brings together the Faculty of Dentistry and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of NUS with the National University Hospital (NUH), under a common governance. NUHS will have the tri-mission of Excellence in Clinical Care, Translational Research and Education of an Academic Health Centre. This is a significant milestone in the faculty s history, as the Academic Health Centre tri-mission of NUHS will allow the parties to better create synergies that will transform the education and training of clinicians, while at the same time translating laboratory research into meaningful clinical applications so as to deliver the best clinical care to Singaporeans. NUHS will be the nexus for the training of a cadre of healthcare providers and biomedical scientists whilst conducting research that focuses on bringing solutions to the major healthcare challenges of the region. Being part of NUHS ensures more than ever that Dentistry and Oral Health is interconnected and integrated with Healthcare in Singapore. The infrastructure on Kent Ridge campus will be redeveloped for the Academic Health Centre tri-mission to include extensive education and research facilities to be housed in new buildings and facilities over the next 2 decades. One of the first pieces was the relocation of most of the teaching facilities and teaching clinics of the Faculty to the Interim Building to be sited at the basic medical sciences Carpark 9. Partial relocation of the faculty allows the location of the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) in Levels 1 and 3 of the former Dental Block in the NUH Main Building for better public access when the Kent Ridge MRT station opens in 2010 as well as the consolidation and modest expansion of Dental Services for the University Dental Cluster. Exploring the options for relocation began as early as January 2008 and the design and planning of the 6195m 2 Interim Building began in the last half of We will share the exciting development of this new teaching and clinical training infrastructure in the near future. The BDS intake has grown to 42 in Academic Year 2006/07 and 2007/08 and we look forward to further increments in class size to 44 next year and to 48 by Academic Year 2009/10 when the Interim Building opens in January In the longer term, dental manpower needs will continue to grow to meet the growing population as well as increasing demand and the increasing complexity of treatment needs of the aging population. A significant further increase in BDS intake would require further expansion of training and teaching facilities. 2 Annual Report 07/08

5 As we move forward in our tri-mission through these challenging times, more than ever, we need the support of all staff, students, alumni and friends of the faculty. Establishment of global links continues with a MOU with the School of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in December The large clinical volume at the Shanghai Ninth People s Hospital will allow the faculty to leverage on the great potential of this wealth of clinical material in the identified areas of Orthodontics / Craniofacial Imaging Research and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. This relationship is further cemented with a program of hosting visiting surgeons in OMS for 6 month stints on a rotating basis. Over this past year, infrastructure within the faculty saw incremental improvements to more optimally use the limited space available, with renovations to the Dean s Office complex, expansion of Dental Centre by another 2 operatories, upgrading of Laboratory 2 and Graduate Laboratory 3 as well as an additional 92m 2 of research space at Level 3 of the DSO building. The faculty received a major gift of $250,000 from the World Dental Education Society (WDES) to set up the WDES-FDI World Dental Federation Travel Grant to support 10 undergraduate students annually on student exchange programme trips to overseas dental schools. With government matching, the total endowed sum will be $500,000 and this generous act of philanthropy will allow enrichment of our students through the global exposure they will garner. The support we receive from our alumni for the Alumni Mentorship Scheme continues to be strong and we are grateful to all alumni who have come forward to volunteer as we refresh and rotate the mentor-mentee assignments. The exposure and connection with practicing alumni that students garner through this program will stand them in good stead when they enter the ranks of the profession. As we move forward in our tri-mission through these challenging times, more than ever, we need the support of all staff, students, alumni and friends of the faculty. The main purpose of the clinic is to manage head and neck cancer patients with an integrated oral dental care program. Oral oncology patients will be able to consult the surgeon and oncologist in the same clinic for treatment planning and follow-up care. The pioneers of the clinic felt that coordination of interdisciplinary care may often be lacking and is best achieved when the patient can be seen in an integrated setting such as this. Since its inception, the clinic has seen close to a hundred patients. It also oversees management of medically compromised patients such as those going for organ transplants. A research program on the quality of life issues for the oral cancer patient is also being planned in the clinic. Dr Fan (left) and Dr Wong examining a patient 26 Annual Report 07/08
