Overview of Caerphilly History of Caerphilly During the 1700s, Caerphilly began to grow into a market town, and during the 19th century, as the South Wales valleys underwent massive growth through industrialisation, so to the town s population grew. Caerphilly railway station was opened in 1871, and in 1899 the Rhymney Railway built their Caerphilly railway works maintenance facilities; however, the expansion of the population in the 19th century was more to do with the increasing market for coal. Present Day Caerphilly Caerphilly is a town in the county borough of Caerphilly, South Wales, located at the southern end of the Rhymney Valley.

Overview of Caerphilly Why is Tourism Important to Wales? Tourism is big business in Wales. Recent research by the Welsh Economy Research Unit (WERU) at Cardiff University indicates that total annual tourism demand is around 4.7 billion. The Gross Value Added (GVA) attributable to tourism is at 1.6 billion, equating to some 3.8% of direct GVA for the Welsh economy as a whole. This research work also indicates that some 68,700 jobs (6.1% of the total Welsh workforce) are directly supported by tourism. These include employees in: hotels restaurants bars libraries museums sport, and, other recreation activities. The three top countries of origin for international tourism to Wales in 2014 were: 1 Republic of Ireland 2 France 3 Germany

Overview of Caerphilly Tourism Tourism in Caerphilly Around 1,602,500 visitors came to Caerphilly CBC, generating expenditure of around 97.7 million (2014). Since 2010 visitor numbers have increased by 5.8% and expenditure has increased by 4.2%. Almost 60% of recorded visitors were Day Visitors. Just over 31% were staying with Friends or Relations (VFR), and 9% were staying in commercial accommodation operations. Day Visitors contributed 40% of the areas income, whilst VFR generated 39% and those staying in commercial accommodation generated 20% to the overall expenditure. An estimated 1,122 FTE jobs are directly attributed to Tourism, and a further 416 FTE s are indirectly linked. Food & Drink together with Shopping are the sectors with the most direct employment. Caerphilly has an abundance of countryside (80%), making the county borough of Caerphilly a playground for outdoor activities.

Overview of Caerphilly Recent investment 3.6M into South Wales Ports (January 2015) The Queen Alexandra lock has guarded the Port of Cardiff since 1905, now, as part of a 3.6m investment across the region the inner lock gates have been replaced. The Port of Cardiff is the first of three of Associated British Ports South Wales ports to receive major structural engineering work with the installation of new lock gates, for only the second time in the lock s 109 year history. Over the next few months, the outer gates at Port Talbot will also be replaced and the gates at Barry will undergo major refurbishment. The lock gate replacement programme at the Port of Cardiff represents 2 million of the total investment, which will see both the North and South inner lock gates replaced. The Port of Cardiff serves the local industry in South Wales, the Midlands and the M4 corridor and offers Welsh businesses access to international markets. The port handles over 12 million tonnes of cargo every year across the South Wales ports and welcomes a wide variety of businesses and customers through the lock on a daily basis. The new gates will secure a safe, resilient and effective lock operation for many years to come ensuring the Port of Cardiff remains open for business for Wales and beyond.

Location of Caerphilly Caerphilly only 20 minute drive from Cardiff Caerphilly is located in the heart of Southern Wales and only 20 minutes drive from Cardiff. The stunning Brecon Beacons National Park is on the doorstep, along with many great attractions, walking and cycling routes. Cardiff is in the top 10 of 64 cities for population growth and new homes. Furthermore, Cardiff is one of only two cities outside the south of England to feature in the top 10 for population growth. Major Science Companies Located in Caerphilly, Cardiff and Wales Companies operating in Wales Science Anchor Companies Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics (diagnostics) - Gwynedd Biomet UK (medical devices) - Bridgend Norgine Ltd (pharmaceuticals) - Caerphilly GE Healthcare (pharmaceuticals) - Cardiff Penn Pharmaceuticals (pharmaceuticals) - Blaenau Gwent. The Caerphilly Heart Disease Study The Caerphilly Heart Disease Study (also known as the Caerphilly Prospective Study) is one of the world s longest running epidemiology studies. Since 1979, a representative sample of adult males born between 1918 and 1938, living in Caerphilly and the surrounding villages of Abertridwr, Bedwas, Machen, Senghenydd and Trethomas, have participated in the study. Wide ranges of health and lifestyle data have been collected throughout the study and have been the basis for over 400 publications in the medical press. A notable report was on the reductions in vascular disease, diabetes, cognitive impairment and dementia attributable to a healthy lifestyle.

Workforce Skills Skills and Qualifications The percentage of Cardiff s population aged with an NVQ4 or higher (38.9%) is significantly above the Wales (29.3%) and UK (32.7%) averages. Similarly, Cardiff also has the highest proportion of people qualified to NVQ3 level. In addition, the proportion with no qualifications is smaller in Cardiff (9.8%) than in Wales (12.3%) and the UK (10.9%). Cardiff s position as a centre for higher education with a full-time student population of some 25,000 to 30,000 many of whom remain in Cardiff after graduation to live and work, partly accounts for the high proportion of resident population with NVQ Levels 4 and above; some evidence suggests that Cardiff retains a higher than average proportion of recent graduates and attracts others from institutions outside the city largely due to the social, cultural and, most importantly, employment opportunities available locally. Qualifications (December 2014) Caerphilly Caerphilly Wales Great Britain (Numbers) (%) (%) (%) Individual Levels NVQ4 And Above 28, NVQ3 And Above 54, NVQ2 And Above 73, NVQ1 And Above 86, Other Qualifications 9, No Qualifications 12,

Workforce Skills Wales cultivates its young workforce Jobs Growth Wales The Jobs Growth Wales programme commenced in April 2012 and will create 4,000 jobs a year for job ready young people throughout Wales. The programme caters for young people that are job ready but have had difficulty securing employment. The Jobs Growth Wales programme provides unemployed young people aged 16-24, with a job opportunity for a six month period paid at national minimum wage. Participants will be paid at or above the national minimum wage for a minimum of 25 hours per week. Young people will be employed for the duration of the programme and the jobs created must be additional to, and not replace, positions that would otherwise be filled. The ambition for the programme is that the entire job opportunities will be sustained by the host employer after the 6 months has completed. All job vacancies are advertised through the Jobs Growth Wales Live system on the Careers Wales website. The programme offers opportunities in the following areas: Private Sector This is where the majority of the jobs will be created. Support will be offered to all aspects of the private sector from small and medium enterprises (SME) to the larger regionally important and anchor companies in Wales, to identify recruitment needs and match those employment opportunities with young people seeking work. A specific strand of support will be delivered to assist micro-businesses to recruit their first employee. In order to build and enhance existing and planned packages of business support delivered through the Department for Economy, Science and Transport.

Workforce Skills Wales cultivates its young workforce Voluntary Sector Enhanced Support Package for Graduates Support and encouragement will be offered for community-based job opportunities for young people in Wales who require a more intensive support in the work place. Support for young people to enter selfemployment bursary of 6,000 A specific strand of support will be delivered to help young people to enter self-employment. In order to build and enhance existing and planned packages of business support delivered through the Department for Economy, Science and Transport - young people can receive a bursary of 6,000. Add value to the existing GO Wales programme extending work experience opportunities for unemployed graduates, many of whom identify a lack of credible work experience as their most significant barrier to employment. Caerphilly and Cardiff want their economies to flourish Caerphilly and Cardiff want their economies to flourish so that they can provide the jobs and opportunities that will make a difference to the lives of people in their region. Over the coming years we intend to work with major employers and training providers to make this happen. The people of Caerphilly and Cardiff also know that their economy is not limited to the local authority boundary. The city-region is a reality, and should be fully exploited for the benefit of the citizens of Cardiff and the Valleys, thus investing in Caerphilly and Cardiff means investing in Wales. Over the last 10 years, for example, Cardiff city was home to a higher percentage of fast growing firms than any other UK core city. Cardiff and the city-region also have a highly skilled, hard working and productive workforce.

Workforce Skills A skilled economy must constantly train its young people Caerphilly and Cardiff needs to be a place, which: recognises that every single individual has talent and can develop where people have aspirations and build knowledge through education and experience attracts and retains smart people and creates opportunities for skilled people to develop and apply what they know recognises the value of its young people and retains them to grow the economy of the future Only by achieving these aims will Caerphilly and its surrounding area have a more productive economy to compete in a global economy, and a better quality of life for all its people. Employment is recognised as a key determining factor of quality of life and a means of reducing levels of deprivation, inequality and improving health.

Workforce Skills Addressing Youth Unemployment We appreciate that there is no quick fix solution and the answer to youth unemployment must come collectively from politicians, businesses, recruitment agencies, schools and colleges. PMP Recruitment constantly works with businesses/industry in order to develop the economy of King s Lynn and to create a future for its young people in line with the UK economy. Employers in King s Lynn hold the key to helping young people prepare for work and harnessing their potential. Advantages of recruiting young people Young people often have an abundance of energy and a natural thirst for knowledge, which can rub off on colleagues and help invigorate the workplace. As a recruitment agency we witness how young people tend to push themselves, wanting to make a lasting impression and prove what they can do. Their sheer determination to complete their work can inspire colleagues around them. Therefore, if a company puts sufficient time and thought into recruiting young people, it can subsequently provide a very positive return on investment. There are clear business benefits to employing young people It is crucial for the wellbeing of young people that businesses take real ownership for skills development and good job creation it is by local employers accepting responsibility that the whole community will achieve a positive impact and sustainable employment.

Summary Why is Workforce Planning Important? Maintaining a skilled workforce is essential for Caerphilly and its surrounding area Workforce planning enables a city to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity by having employees with the right knowledge and skills and who are a good fit for the job they are in, which in turn strengthens an organisation s capacity to achieve business targets. By boosting skills companies will see their level of productivity increase and business will play its part by improving competitiveness, in addition furthering opportunities for young people by way of apprenticeships and more training for older workers is crucial. Workforce planning is a continuous process of shaping the workforce to ensure that it is capable of delivering organisational objectives now and in the future; thus every town and city needs a strong and proficient workforce to enable it to prosper and to actively compete in today s increasingly competitive global market.

Summary PMP s Objective At PMP Recruitment we know that businesses in Caerphilly and Cardiff can be resourceful and innovative, and despite recent economic conditions businesses throughout Wales have continued to create jobs and opportunities. PMP recruitment constantly endeavour to develop and nurture relationships which they have with all their candidates on their database, as well as continually seeking and engaging with new candidates to attract fresh talent. At PMP recruitment we recognise, completely, that the long-term economic health of towns and cities rests on investment in citizens skills and professional qualifications. Also as a recruitment agency we acknowledge our responsibility that we must always be at the forefront of industry knowledge. It is clear that business can succeed in Caerphilly and Cardiff It is our objective to help and assist all companies in the region of Caerphilly and Cardiff to recruit and employ successful candidates in order that they may fulfil business targets and compete in today s increasingly competitive global markets.
