ACSM s Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual (3 rd Ed.). Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Course Description: To enhance the student s knowledge and application of exercise testing for apparently healthy populations. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Define contraindications for exercise testing and/or training. 2. Administer a comprehensive physical examination. a. Cardiovascular endurance b. Muscular strength c. Muscular endurance d. Body composition e. Flexibility 3. Interpret results from aforementioned physical assessments. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: KSA Description, Lab, or both Knowledge of the differences in cardiorespiratory response to acute graded exercise between conditioned and unconditioned individuals Knowledge of the structure and function of the skeletal muscle fiber Knowledge of the characteristics of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers Knowledge of the response of the following variables to acute static and dynamic exercise: heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, pulmonary ventilation, tidal volume, respiratory rate, and arteriovenous oxygen difference Knowledge of blood pressure responses associated with acute exercise,
2 including changes in body position Knowledge of the following terms: progressive resistance, isotonic/isometric, concentric, eccentric, atrophy, hyperplasia, hypertrophy, sets, repetitions, plyometrics, Valsalva maneuver Ability to locate the anatomic landmarks for palpation of peripheral pulses and blood pressure Knowledge of cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and musculoskeletal risk factors that may require further evaluation by medical or allied health professionals before participation in physical activity Knowledge of the risk factor thresholds for ACSM risk stratification which includes genetic and lifestyle factors related to the development of CAD Knowledge of the atherosclerotic process, the factors involved in its genesis and progression, and the potential role of exercise in treatment Knowledge of and ability to discuss the physiological basis of the major components of physical fitness: flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition Knowledge of the value of the health/medical history Knowledge of the value of a medical clearance prior to exercise participation Knowledge of and the ability to perform risk stratification and its implications towards medical clearance prior to administration of an exercise test or participation in an exercise program Knowledge of relative and absolute contraindications to exercise testing or participation Knowledge of the limitations of informed consent and medical clearance prior to exercise testing Knowledge of the advantages/disadvantages and limitations of the various body composition techniques including but not limited to: air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), hydrostatic weighing, skinfolds and bioelectrical impedence Skill in accurately measuring heart rate, blood pressure, and obtaining rating of perceived exertion (RPE) at rest and during exercise according to established guidelines Skill in measuring skinfold sites, skeletal diameters, and girth measurements used for estimating body composition Ability to locate the brachial artery and correctly place the cuff and stethoscope in position for blood pressure measurement Ability to locate common sites for measurement of skinfold thicknesses and circumferences (for determination of body composition and waist-hip ratio) Ability to explain the purpose and procedures and perform the monitoring (HR, RPE and BP) of clients prior to, during, and after cardiorespiratory fitness testing Ability to instruct participants in the use of equipment and test procedures Ability to explain purpose of testing, determine an appropriate submaximal or maximal protocol, and perform an assessment of cardiovascular fitness on
3 the treadmill or the cycle ergometer Ability to describe the purpose of testing, determine appropriate protocols, and perform assessments of muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility Ability to perform various techniques of assessing body composition Ability to analyze and interpret information obtained from the cardiorespiratory fitness test and the muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition assessments for apparently healthy individuals and those with controlled chronic disease Ability to identify appropriate criteria for terminating a fitness evaluation and demonstrate proper procedures to be followed after discontinuing such a test Ability to identify individuals for whom physician supervision is recommended during maximal and submaximal exercise testing Knowledge of the recommended intensity, duration, frequency, and type of physical activity necessary for development of cardiorespiratory fitness in an apparently healthy population Knowledge of the principles of overload, specificity, and progression and how they relate to exercise programming Knowledge of the components incorporated into an exercise session and the proper sequence (i.e., preexercise evaluation, warm-up, aerobic stimulus phase, cool-down, muscular strength and/or endurance, and flexibility) Ability to convert between absolute (ml.min<su>-1 or L.min<su>-1) and relative oxygen costs (ml.kg<su>-1.min<su>-1, and/or METs) Ability to evaluate flexibility and prescribe appropriate flexibility exercises for all major muscle groups Knowledge of the number of kilocalories equivalent to losing 1 pound of body fat and the ability to prescribe appropriate amount of exercise to achieve weight loss goals Knowledge of the guidelines for caloric intake for an individual desiring to lose or gain weight Ability to describe the health implications of variation in body fat distribution patterns and the significance of the waist to hip ratio Knowledge of basic precautions taken in an exercise setting to ensure participant safety Knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors or conditions that may require consultation with medical personnel before testing or training, including inappropriate changes of resting or exercise heart rate and blood pressure, new onset discomfort in chest, neck, shoulder, or arm, changes in the pattern of discomfort during rest or exercise, fainting or dizzy spells, and claudication. Other as needed Course Evaluations: Written Lab Reports Midterm Exam Final Exam Total Possible Points 200 points 150 points 150 points 500 points Method of Evaluation A = 90% and above; B = 80% and above; C = 70% and above; D = 60% and above; F = below 60% A final grade of C or better is required of all majors in KHS. Course Requirements The final grade will be based upon total points possible including all of the areas listed below: 1. Written Lab Reports: Lab reports are to include the following sections: a. Introduction b. Methodology c. Results d. Discussion e. Reference list 2. Practical Exam: 1. Demonstrate how to correctly perform any fitness assessment we have discussed throughout the semester. 2. You will bring a low risk individual of your choice to the lab at a predetermined time to be your client. 3. This individual cannot have previously had Fitness Assessment. WRITTEN EXAMS: All exams must be taken on their assigned dates. If you miss an exam for an excused absence, the student must contact me prior to the exam day class to arrange a make-up time. If University emergency occurs that prevents administration of the Final exam, your final grade will be calculated based on the work done through this point.) ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION: Regular, attentive and participatory attendance is essential to this course and you are expected to attend all class meetings. The following attendance policy will be enforced: 3 unexcused absences = 10% reduction of your total points, 4 = 15%, 5 = 20%, > 6 = failure or course. Excused absences will only be granted for documented illness or emergency or University sanctioned events or military obligation with required documentation submitted beforehand. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and the late policy outlined in this syllabus will remain applicable. GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS 1. Questions and assignments (group or individual) 2. 5 Students interested in strengthening personal writing skills may contact the Writing Center at Tutoring Central in West Hall, Fatal Error Policy: All written assignments must meet minimal presentation standards to be acceptable. These standards address spelling, punctuation, format and basic grammar. The term Fatal Errors refers to technical American English errors of form. Specifically, they include the following: a) each different word misspelled; b) each sentence fragment; c) each run-on sentence or comma splice; d) each mistake in capitalization; e) each serious error in punctuation that obscures meaning; f) each error in verb tense or subject/verb agreement; g) lack of conformity with assignment format; and, h) each improper citation, or lack of citation, where one is needed. Papers with more than three (3) fatal errors marked by an instructor on any one page, or more than 12 non-repeated errors for the entire document will be returned to the student and subject to 20% off the grade immediately and may be subject to 10% off for each day until the paper is returned corrected. Instructors will determine the number of resubmissions allowed for each assignment. Final course papers (where there is no time for a resubmission) will be docked one percent of the grade for each error including one percent off for each repeated error. Ethical conduct is expected in this course; academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: plagiarizing; cheating on exams or in the preparation of academic work; copying from tests, reports, etc.; collaborating with others without prior authorization; reuse of work in more than one class without informing the instructor; possessing contents of an un-administered examination; and using materials during a test not authorized by the instructor. While collaboration with cohorts in study groups is encouraged, each student is responsible for his or her own work. Students may not, under any circumstances, turn in work that has been prepared by someone else. Disciplinary action (as outlined by the Code of Student Conduct) will result in one of the following at the instructor s discretion: A substitute assignment or examination A reduced grade for the assignment, examination, or course A grade of zero of F for the assignment, examination, or course A grade of F for the course *NOTE: UCO subscribes to the Turnitin.com plagiarism prevention service. Students agree that by taking this course, all required assignments may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com restricted access reference database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such assignments.
