1 Course Prefix & Number: EP 3304 MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION DEPARTMENT of KINESIOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS Course Title: Credit Hours: Course Type: Catalog Description: Exercise Physiology Four (4) semester hours Lecture Prerequisites: BIO 1004 or BIO 3014 and CH 1043 or CH Examines the physiological systems central to exercise performance, the interrelationships of those systems during exercise, and adaptations of the human body during both acute and chronic exercise. Demonstrate an understanding of the integration between nervous and muscular systems. CFPO # 3 2. Describe the structure and function of skeletal muscle, and discuss the excitation and contraction processes. CFPO # 3 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the sequence of events involved in movements, including the recruitment of muscle fibers and regulation of force production. CFPO # 3 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the various types of muscular actions and their relationship to movement. CFPO # 3 5. Discuss the various energy systems, including the phosphagen energy system, glycolysis, Krebs citric acid cycle and electron transport/oxidative phosphorylation. CFPO # 3 6. Discuss energy transitions and metabolic adaptations to exercise. CFPO # 3 7. Describe factors contributing to fatigue during exercise. CFPO # 3 8. Describe the acute responses and chronic adaptations of the neuromuscular system to exercise and training. CFPO # 3 9. Demonstrate an understanding of the training techniques used for enhancing muscular strength and aerobic and anaerobic power, as well as the physiological concepts for these training techniques. Taking a quiz, examination, or similar evaluated assignment for another person; or utilizing another person to take a quiz, examination, or similar assignment in place of oneself. Submitting any course materials or activities not the student s own, allowing such a submission to be made for oneself, or making such a submission for another. Using the ideas, organization, or words of another from a book, article, paper, computer file, or other source in any assignment without giving proper credit following accepted citation rules (plagiarism). Altering, stealing, and/or falsifying research data used in research reports, theses, or dissertations. Disregarding policies governing use of human subjects or animals in research. Student must sign a copy of the honor code at the beginning of the semester. Technology: Students will need to access MyCourses to obtain files such as the syllabus and assignments. Student grades will be posted through MyGrades in the MyCourses environment and the calendar and announcements areas within MyCourses will be used to send student reminders and to keep students on task throughout the semester. In the laboratory portion of the course, students will become familiar with the proper use of equipment used to do fitness assessments such as blood pressure cuffs, sphygmomanometers, cycle ergometers, BODPOD, BIA, etc. Diversity: This issue will not specifically be discussed within the scope of this course. Disability: Appropriate accommodations will be made for students with disabilities. For example, for those with physical disabilities, a classroom with wheelchair access will be provided. Students with learning disabilities will be given accommodations, as suggested, by Student Support Services ( ). Students will also be made aware of and advised of ways to appropriately handle patients that they may encounter with disabilities. Field Component: 1. 7 3. Site of field experience: Exercise Physiology Laboratory, 132 McCarthy Gymnasium 4. Purpose of field experience and activities: Students apply knowledge accrued from classroom lecture to hands-on experiences in the exercise science laboratory. Students learn and perform basic and more advanced fitness assessment tests. 8 Week 13: Pulmonary Function Lab Text: pp Week 14: Flexibility Testing Text: handouts to be given Week 15: Lab Final Exam Evaluation of Student Progress: Exams (4) 60% Laboratory Grade 25% Quizzes/Assignments 15% Grading Scale: A = %, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = 0-59%. Exams: There will be four exams and all exams will count equally towards the final grade. There will be three exams during the semester that will be announced at least one class day before the exam. There will be a final exam during the scheduled final time for this course. Exams can include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, essay, etc. Exam material will be derived from lectures, additional lecture notes provided that are not covered in class material from the text and any additional materials that may be provided during the semester. Quizzes/Assignments: Quizzes or assignments can be given at any time. The quiz/assignment average will constitute 15% of the total course grade. Further directions for quizzes and any assignments will be given later. Laboratory Grade: The score earned in the lab section of the course will count as 25% of the final course grade (refer to Assessment of Laboratory Experiences for additional information). Late and Missed Exams: Any student late for an exam will not be allowed to take the exam after the first person has finished. Any student missing an exam must submit an acceptable written excuse to the instructor the first day of return. Failure to submit a written excuse with proper documentation or failure to make up the exam will result in a zero for the exam. Acceptable excuses are discussed in the Academic Operating Policy and Procedure Manual. Acceptable absences include, but are not limited to: participation in an activity appearing on the university s authorized activity list; death or major illness of a student s immediate family, religious observance; and, personal sickness that is too severe or contagious for the student to attend class as determined by the Health Center or EP 3304 Exercise Physiology Revised Spring

9 off-campus physician. A written excuse with proper documentation must be submitted to the instructor prior to the next scheduled lab meeting. Late Assignments: Failure to complete an assignment on time will result in a zero for the assignment unless an acceptable written excuse is submitted to the instructor, similar to the policy for exams above. Attendance: Regular class attendance is expected; the instructor maintains an attendance record. The student is responsible for all material missed regardless of whether the absence was excused or not excused. Any student who accumulates more than 2 unexcused absences will receive a half letter grade deduction for each absence past the second one. Students are expected to be on time for class. Tardiness will not be tolerated, as it disrupts the learning of those who were respectful enough to be on time for class. A tardy will be counted if you are more than 5 minutes late for class. Each tardy will count as 1/3 of an absence. Acceptable excuses are discussed in the Academic Operating Policy and Procedure Manual (refer to Section 12:09: Class Attendance and Reporting Absences, Acceptable absences include, but are not limited to: participation in an activity appearing on the university s authorized activity list; death or major illness in a student s immediate family, religious observance; and, personal sickness that is too severe or contagious for the student to attend class as determined by the Health Center or off-campus physician. For excused absences, a written excuse including proper documentation must be submitted to the instructor on the first day back to class. Assessment of Laboratory Experiences: The final laboratory score is 25% of the final grade for EP 3304, and is determined by weekly quizzes, lab reports and final lab exam. Quizzes: A short quiz will be given at the start of each lab period on the material for that day s lab. Students should prepare for each quiz by reading the lab that will be completed that day. Quizzes will constitute 20% of the laboratory grade. Lab Reports: Laboratory reports are due at the beginning of the next lab session. Failure to submit lab reports on time will result in a zero for the assignment. Lab reports are 40% of the final lab grade. Lab reports will consist of completed data sheets and lab questions. Final Lab Exam: There will be a lab final during the final scheduled laboratory session of the semester which will constitute 40% of your laboratory grade. The lab exam will consist of a practical portion (demonstration of skills and knowledge) and a written portion consisting of multiple choice, short answer and EP 3304 Exercise Physiology Revised Spring

10 calculation questions. The written portion of the lab final exam will constitute 30% of the overall laboratory grade and the practical portion will comprise 10%. Attendance & Participation: Attendance and active involvement at all laboratory activities is expected and required. There are no scheduled opportunities to make-up a missed lab. If you know, beforehand, of a conflict that you have with your regularly scheduled lab time, consult your lab instructor about scheduling to attend a different lab section for that day s lab. If it is not possible for you to attend an alternate lab session, a written excuse with proper documentation must be submitted to both your course instructor and your lab instructor in order to not have the missed laboratory counted against you. In the event that a lab is missed because of an excused absence, the student s lab grade will be averaged on one less total number of labs. Other Laboratory Information: Students are expected to bring to class each week, in addition to the lab manual, pen and paper for taking notes and a calculator. Students need to come to lab dressed appropriately for exercise. This entails wearing appropriate clothing, such as t-shirts and shorts or warm-up pants, and sports bras for females. Footwear should consist of tennis shoes with closed toes and an enclosed heel (you must be able to run and jump in the shoes without them falling off) and socks.
