2 Fitness Center When working in partnership with any organization looking to design, update and/or build out a worksite fitness center, Healthbreak s Master degreed, nationally certified team utilizes the latest in scientific guidelines as well as a quarter century of experience to provide recommendations to provide a state of the art as well as safe and legally compliant facility for employees to improve their health. The following information is what Healthbreak foundationally utilizes to help drive decisions to do just that: American College of Sports Medicine Health/Fitness Facility Design Guidelines General: Temperature: degrees Fahrenheit Humidity: 60 percent or less 8-12 exchanges per hour, back-of-house operational spaces such as laundry should be separated from physical activity spaces Lighting: At least 50 foot-candles at the eye level. Indirect lighting. Antistatic carpet with antifungal and antibacterial treatment. Ceiling height: 10 feet when possible Space: All space must adhere to ADA accessibility requirements. Fitness testing: square feet Counseling room: square feet Seminar room: 20 square feet/person square feet per piece of equipment, 3-27 square feet per member depending on activity, clear floor space of at least 30 by 48 must be provided for ADA access surrounding each machine.
3 Exercise classrooms: At least square feet per user Mirrors: On at least two walls, 6 inches above the ground Flooring: A wood or comparable floor surface in conjunction with a subfloor system. According to DIN standards, a floor must meet six criteria: shock absorption, standard vertical deflection, defective indentation, sliding characteristics, ball deflection and rolling load. Shock absorption: 53%, min vertical deformation 2.3mm, min deflective indentation 15%, max sliding characteristic.5 to.7 range, ball deflection 90% min, rolling load lb. Walls: Insulated for sound Lighting: Indirect lighting utilizing adjustable light sources. Sound: No higher than decibels Front Desk: Counter ht: At least 30 square feet 42 on user side, 36 on staff side Locker Room: square feet per person for peak use (expect 50% of people during peak will be in locker room at one time). Generally the total square footage allocated to locker rooms are between 25-35% of total space in a facility. At least 5% and not less than one of each type (full, half, quarter, etc.) must be ADA accessible. Accessible benches should be located adjacent to the accessible lockers. Flooring: Non-slip tile or special rubber matting degrees Fahrenheit Enough of handle 20% of total members for daily, 70-85% if permanent. Approximately 1 shower for each one percent of total base membership. (I.e. 20 total showers for 2000 members) Reference: ACSM s Health / Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines, American College of Sports Medicine, Fourth Edition, 2012
4 Per your request, the Healthbreak Fitness Center Management Team has reviewed the proposed space plan and have provided a variety of recommendations for you to consider. See the initial listing below: Suggestions/feedback on the proposed space plan of the fitness center including: Fitness Center Equipment (Consider leasing route for the equipment that isn t already existing so they can get new equipment in there every 2-years. Then the leasing company will be in charge of the maintenance cost, repairs, etc. within the existing contract. Once some of the existing equipment has run its course, we can add new pieces to the existing leasing contract.) Cardio Pieces (Precor & LifeFitness recommended) 8 Treadmills 2 Recumbent Bikes 2 Regular/ or spinning bikes 4-6 Elliptical- Lifefitness &/Arc Trainers 1 Matrix Stepmill 2 rowers (I would suggest the concept 2 as they are much easier maintenance than water) Strength Pieces - (items outside of existing Free Motion & Free Weight & Chin/Dip) Smith Machine or Max Rack (more versatile but takes more space) Leg press plyo boxes, medicine balls, resistance bands, fitness balls and kettle bells. A stretch trainer/stretch partner chair is very useful. LifeSpan and Precor both have similar models. Ab/Low Back Combo Group Fitness Room Equipment (assuming current OWH equipment is still available) Body Bars (6-20 #) Jump Ropes Yoga blocks/straps/mats TRX Kettlebells (10 55lbs) Medicine balls (4-12lbs) Stability balls Foam rollers 3-4 Bosu's Cycling bikes (best of right now is Stages Bikes, but there are many other great options: Schwinn is what most gyms have but a few "new" places are getting the Stages bikes) If you can get ones with the computer consoles, those are the best!
5 Layout/Space/Miscellaneous (comments based on expertise or things to remember) Locker rooms: It appears there are less women s lockers than men s and is there a sitting area? Include as many lockers as possible. Especially with a full Group X schedule, you will have more concentrations of women visiting during class times. Recommend day use only, bring your own lock (recommend against the digital key pad locks, frequent maintenance) Laundry/Consultation: Be aware of laundry noise issues while trying to hold consultations. It may feel weird to the client meeting in a laundry room. There may also be chemical storage requirements. Consultation area seems small. Should include privacy because in order to complete fitness assessments, i.e. body composition. Also, HIPAA concerns for open space. Cubbies: Consider minimal in fitness center and some in group ex room if someone is coming in without going into the locker room. Free Weight: Area needs mirrors Stretching/Core: Need a dedicated space with mats Storage: Equipment storage specifically in the group fitness classroom to house small equipment (body bars, bands, jump ropes, steps, stability balls, small dumbbells, mats, Yoga equipment etc.) where the equipment is typically used. Storage/wall space for other popular equipment in the main area (medicine balls, stability balls, bosu, kb, etc.) In both group ex and main fitness center: hooks on the wall for bands, wall-mount stretching mat rack, medball tree, etc. Bulletin boards, workout chart/storage area, spray solution/towel area, etc. Group X Room: Consider reversing the proposed layout so that entry into the room is from the back and the instructor is on the west wall vs. on the east wall. This provides for less disruption of latecomers to class once it has already started. Audiovisual: Need to plan for the stereo cabinet, speakers and fans. If offering spinning, there will need to be more than the average number of fans. Wall mounted TV s (not on the equipment) would be best. Equipment mounted TV s recommend against (several years and dozens of facilities, rarely have a good experience in the long-run) Best option is Cardio Theater integrated directly into Precor equipment Miscellaneous: Wipes solution Prefer Gym Wipes (dedicated wipes) vs spray bottles and towels if have budget Trash cans need 3-5 on floor for this size facility (easy to overlook) Coat rack in locker rooms or entry are well utilized
