1 Course Title: Physical Education: Activities to Enhance Proper Development HPE 924 Instructor: Marty Higginbotham Number of credit units: Three Targeted Audience: Grades K 12 physical education/health teachers in any geographical location. Course Content and Rationale: This course provides physical activities that focus on multilateral development. This helps promote proper physical development of children and enhances biomotor abilities. Developing a child multilaterally allows them to progress, achieve fitness and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Students will utilize a text book and select activities in the course manual to assist in understanding and learning the course concepts. The course meets national standards in physical education in the areas of movement, maintaining a level of fitness, understanding the benefits of fitness and the social and personal responsibility with participation in physical activity. Relation to Existing Course Offerings: This is a physical education course designed to introduce the teacher to multilateral development. The course text and the activities in the manual will create an understanding for multilateral development and how it will enhance proper development in children. In reviewing the Fresno Pacific Independent Study Course Listings I did not see a course that was similar to the teachings and goals of this one I am proposing. Instructor Qualifications: Masters degrees in both curriculum and instruction as well as exercise physiology. I am currently certified in the following areas through the International Fitness Professionals Association: Advanced Personal Trainer, Sports Nutritionist, and Program Design Specialist. I am also certified by Tudor Bompa Training Systems in the following areas: Periodization Specialist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist. I have competed in distance running since I was very young. Upon Completion of my college graduation from Fresno Pacific I was sponsored by Adidas for eight years. During my years of competition I was very fortunate to meet and speak with quality coaches and trainers including one Olympic coach. I have also attended a variety of conferences and workshops on training and athletics.

Physical activities that focus on multilateral development helps promote proper physical development of children and enhances biomotor abilities such as strength, power, endurance, speed, flexibility, coordination and agility. The courses offers various activities and to choose from and forms for testing and monitoring student progress. Multilateral development allows students to progress, achieve fitness and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The course involves students in a variety of multilateral activities promoting proper skill development in physical fitness areas. Students will enjoy play, while experiencing, movement that enhances proper development. Course Materials: Course manual developed by the instructor and the text, Total Training for Young Champions.
3 Course Requirements: 1. Complete any ten of the activities listed n the course manual. Complete a Log form for each selected activity. 2. Create two activities that enhance multilateral development. Be sure to clearly explain the activity and tell what biomotor ability/skills are being enhanced by performing the activity. 3. Go to the following web site: afpafitness.com from there go to the link titled Articles. From the many articles provided, select any three fitness articles and write a brief reflection (two to three pages) for each article. Select articles that will be beneficial to your class and/or current teaching assignment. 4. Develop a lesson plan in which one or ore academic areas are integrated into the activity. Create a graphic organizer that will support the content area you have integrated into the activity. See the course manual for examples. Identify teaching standards. 5. Utilizing a variety of resources, complete a research paper in the area of youth fitness. Include not only facts but your thoughts and experiences as well. The course manual provides some possible topics for research. However, any topic related to youth fitness is acceptable. National Standards: During this course the students will address a variety of standards as multilateral development is critical during youth. The students will constantly utilize a variety of basic and advanced movement using different biomotor abilities. They will understand how to monitor and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness and also develop an understanding for the benefits of participation in physical activity. Students will also learn and develop an understanding for the social and personal responsibility related to participation in physical activity. All activities are geared to improve and enhance the level of student fitness. The course addresses the following standards for the teaching profession: - knowledge of subject matter - sound teaching practices - student engagement in learning - high expectations for learners - assessment - promoting an active lifestyle State content standards can be viewed at
4 Learning Objectives/Outcomes: The participant will: become familiar with multilateral developmental activities implement and analyze fitness activities promoting proper development evaluate and critique physical education activities research and analyze topics in physical fitness Schedule of Topics and Assignments: Students should follow the sequence of assignments as they are listed in the course manual. The assignments require application, reflective writing, development of lessons, critical thinking and research. Evidence of Learning: successful completion of selected activities demonstrate and understanding of multilateral development by creating activities for specific biomotor abilities meaningful reflection of youth fitness related articles development of lesson plans promoting multilateral development demonstrating knowledge in a specific area of youth fitness through research Grading Policy and Rubrics: 1. Completion of activities. (Four points for each completed activity. Grading: 40%) 2. Created activities enhancing multilateral development. (Five points given for reach completed activity. Grading: 10%) 3. Article reflections: (Five points for each completed reflection. Grading: 15%) 4. Lesson plan. (Ten points given for this assignment. Grading: 10%) 5. Research paper. ( Twenty-five points given for this assignment. Grading: 25%) Final grade is determined by the total number of points earned.
