1 Summer 2016 Yuletide greetings to one and all Christmas in New Zealand is less about snow and sleigh bells and more about sun, sand and barbecues. The pohutukawa tree, with its crimson flower, has become an established part of the New Zealand Christmas tradition. This iconic Kiwi Christmas tree once known as the settlers Christmas tree often features on greeting cards and in poems and songs, and has become an important symbol for New Zealanders at home and abroad. 2 FROM OUR FACILITY MANAGER Living at Glenwood Dear Residents, Families and Staff We re now in the first week of December which means we are facing Christmas again. What a busy year it has been with changes in the management team here at Glenwood. As you are probably aware, Rebecca Waldron is now on maternity leave, Lynne Stewart has been seconded into the Clinical Nurse Leader position for the next year, Sally Furness has stepped into the Community Coordinator position, Matt Jenkins has now left us and his position as support service manager is not going to be replaced at this stage. We are looking for a permanent first cook though, so if you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact me. Tina Hargood, the lead diversional therapist, had a serious accident several months ago now and is still on leave but is due back with us early next year. Let us know what you think This month we have organised a satisfaction survey for both residents and relatives to see what we can do better to meet your needs. Please have your say, fill in the questionnaires and return them, as this will form the basis of next year s quality work for our teams at Glenwood. Emergency preparedness Mother Nature has taught us once again over the last month how unpredictable and non-discriminating she can be with earthquakes and flooding thus highlighting the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Rest assured we do have emergency supplies, kits and contingencies in place. Staff are also trained in what to do should an event happen. Glenwood staff have fundraised and donated towards the earthquake relief fund and our sympathies go out to all the victims. Relay for life Relay for life is a community event that gives us a chance to celebrate cancer survivors and their carers, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. Denise McAlpine Glenwood staff will take part in this event next year and have already started fundraising. We are going to hold a garage sale next January so if you have goods you would like to donate for the sale please let us know. Happy Charlie Charlie, my little dog, continues to enjoy his days at Glenwood and I would like to personally thank Henrietta for helping me with him. He enjoys his walks and certainly loves everyone s attention. Yuletide celebrations and greetings The residents Christmas party is on Friday 9 December I hope that you can join us to celebrate another festive season. The kitchen always turns out delicious treats for Christmas. 3 CLINICAL NURSE LEADER Challenges, benefits and congratulations Hello All The last month had been a very busy one with our Clinical Nurse Leader, Rebecca going on maternity leave, RN Sally stepping into the Community Manager role and my moving over to relieve Rebecca as the acting Clinical Nurse Leader. We wish Rebecca all the very best for her and the new baby. We also wish Sally the best as she takes on a different challenge. With all new positions comes challenges and benefits. Firstly, I wish to apologise to those to whom I have yet to introduce myself and ask for your patience as I endeavour to do so in the next few weeks. Additional to my orientation in my new role, I have had the opportunity to be part of a celebration of staff achievements. On 9 November, the Wairarapa Mayors Task Force for Jobs, together with the Industry Training Federation, put on a graduation ceremony for Wairarapa graduates who have recently completed a National Certificate qualification with an Industry Training Organisation. All our graduates completed their Level 3 certificates with Service IQ and Careerforce. Congratulations are due to Keri Knight, Leanne Steffert, Jonothan Ross, Helen Hooper, Kolotita (Esther) Vianne, Moana Power, Mave Fergusson and Erin Nugent. 4 QUALITY Best of care on our minds Hi Everyone Can you believe it, another year almost over I hope it has been kind to you. We have sent out our relatives satisfaction surveys and look forward to getting these back so as to see how we are doing. We also have a residents satisfaction survey underway and appreciate their feedback, too. The staff are doing their annual Infection Control Procedures Competency which I m sure they are all thrilled with, and are great at getting back to me. We continue to review our Policies and Procedures and update these as required we are always looking at ways of improving to ensure we give good quality care. I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and best wishes for Hopefully the wonderful weather will Jacqui Staats continue so we can all enjoy the festive season with our families and friends. 5 ADMINISTRATION Christmas is upon us already! Dear Residents and Families Well, it s nearly summer and Christmas is upon us already! How did that happen? In the last couple of weeks I have been helping organising the upcoming parties and staff are looking forward to their Christmas function on Saturday 18 December thanks to the Masonic Villages Trust Xmas Fund and kind donations during the year, we are off to the Solway Grill this year and are looking forward to some fun and laughter. Our residents Christmas function will be held on Friday 9 December and we are looking forward to receiving a wrapped gift for your loved one for our Christmas fairies and Santa. The DTs have all kinds of fun and frivolities planned, looking forward to the festive cheer. The kitchen always turns out delicious treats for Christmas so come and join this fun occasion. Join us on Christmas Day If you unable to take your family member out on Christmas Day to celebrate with you, you are very welcome to join your loved one here at Glenwood for Christmas lunch. We are able to accommodate two people per resident at $15.00 a head. Our kitchen team will create a festive menu for you all so if you are interested in making a booking, please arrange payment to me at the Reception Desk before the day. Keeping summer sun safe We would like to remind you, as the days are getting hotter and our residents are enjoying our beautiful courtyards, of the importance of being summer sun safe. Could you please ensure sunhats and sunscreen are available in your family member s room for staff to access. Please check on your next visit if these items are available we highly appreciate your help.
