F O C U S Feeding Our Curiosity, Uncovering Strengths Issue #361 Nov. 19th, 2018 Have you Heard about Giving Tuesday? Giving Tuesday is also called the global day of giving. Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday now we celebrate Giving Tuesday, November 27, Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The opening day of the giving season, it s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners - nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals - to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world, Giving Tuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. Where is Giving Tuesday celebrated? Giving Tuesday is a global movement. Giving Tuesday began in the United States in 2012, and was brought to Canada in In 2017, people from more than 150 countries participated in Giving Tuesday, raising in excess of $300 million from 2.5 million donations. How can I get involved in Giving Tuesday? - Make a donation to a charity of your choice on Giving Tuesday - Help us to spread the word about Giving Tuesday and the impact on our local community - Make a commitment to volunteer your time - Attend a Giving Tuesday event - Share on social media - Challenge your friends and family to do the same. How will my support make a difference? - Your financial donations will help to directly impact the lives of those in need in your community - Through volunteering your time, you will become a leader in your community and ambassador for your favourite causes - You will show your commitment to improving your local community and the lives of those living in it - You will help to raise awareness for local causes If you want to join the movement and learn more visit Oliver Road, PO Box 1087, Campbellford, ON or If you wish to be removed from the distribution list at anytime, simply send a reply to this linked .
CCN In the News: Seniors Boogie in Brighton to Prevent Falls For the longest time, dance was considered the province of the young and the fit. The evidence from research shows that dance enhances a senior s mental and physically well- being. Every Monday, Community Care Northumberland (CCN) has been operating a free Dance Program to help residents in Brighton improve their fitness, flexibility and overall coordination, helping to reduce falls and falls related injuries. CCN has been able to offer this program through the generosity of a grant provided by the Kay Stafford Memorial Grant; administered by the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. Falls are the leading cause of injuries for adults 65 and older with many adults ending up in hospital emergency departments for treatment every year, said Trish Baird Executive Director of CCN. The consequences from a fall can range from bruises, fractured hips and head injuries to irreversible calamities that can lead to death. We appreciate the support of the Kay Stafford Fund to pilot this dance program in Brighton and are thrilled with the overwhelming response to the program. CCN believes our goal of keeping all these participants out of the emergency room at Trenton Memorial Hospital for falls related injuries will be reached. The class is at capacity with 80 participants and an additional 63 on the waiting list. It was delightful to see our Kay Stafford funds in use, helping to keep so many seniors fit and healthy, said Wendy Warner - TMHF. I m sure that Mrs. Stafford would agree this was a great use of her gift.
Two Grief Education Workshop Dates and Locations Announced For more information or to register, please call our Hospice Services: Upcoming Workshop in Campbellford The Food of Spain Spanish cuisine is as diverse as it is delicious. Included will be what is said to be Spain's national dish--paella. There will be a Tapas or two, Gazpacho, a Traditional Dessert and a thirst quenching Sangria. A taste of everything and the recipes to take home makes for a fun evening. 4 CCN In the News: Volunteer and Learn a New Skill While Helping Your Neighbours High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease so monitoring blood pressure is important to overall health and wellness. Mary Zurawel and Angela Watkins-Hobart are two of the volunteers who regularly staff Community Care Northumberland (CCN) s free blood pressure clinic at Northumberland Mall in Cobourg. This blood pressure clinic is on the first Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the courtyard outside of Metro. It is absolutely free and open to all members of the public. Pictured left: (L-R) Mary Zurawel, Patricia Gagnon CCN Program Assistant and Angela Watkins-Hobart. Cardio health awareness is so important, said Mary Zurawel. 40% of people over the age of 55 have high blood pressure and an additional 20% of people of this age don t know that they do. I loved volunteering here, I helped raise awareness about preventative health care and helped connect people to other resources in the community, she added. CCN would like to thank Mary for her years of volunteering as a blood pressure clinic volunteer, she started in 2010 and retired from this program in November. CCN is looking for volunteers who would help at this clinic and learn how to take accurate individual blood pressure readings at this clinic. After being trained volunteers will know how to take accurate systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings and discuss follow up recommendations with the participants, said Trish Baird Executive Director of CCN. Volunteers do not give medical advice instead they help to promote healthy lifestyle choices to decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is so important to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. It may actually be the single most preventative action you can take to save you from having a stroke or other serious damage to your heart and blood vessels. Next clinic is on December 3 rd, 2018 and the first Monday of each month after. For more information about training for this unique volunteering opportunity, please contact Patricia at the Community Care Northumberland office in Port Hope (905) Quick Fact: Did You Know? Snow Isn t White While snowflakes appear white as they fall through the sky or as they accumulate on the ground as snowfall, they are in fact totally clear. The many sides of these clear ice crystals cause the eye to diffuse the reflection of the light passing through them which results in snowflakes appearing to be white in colour.
Upcoming Event Memorial Service in Cobourg PLEASE RSVP attendance by calling our Hospice Services office:
Community Diners in Warkworth Our Warkworth Diners program is hosted every 3 months by volunteers from the Free Methodist Church. Pictured left: (L-R): Pastor Len Bruce, Araxie Robertson, Darlene Downes, Suzanne Atkinson, Margaret Campbell. They served our clients a lovely lunch of ham with scalloped potatoes, squash, mixed vegetables, coleslaw, salad, tomato juice and rolls. Dessert was apple crisp or pumpkin cake with tea or coffee. Volunteers serve food family style and help with hot dishes. It s a wonderful lunch out and the food is always so good for a good price, said a client. Thank you to the volunteers of the Free Methodist Church for hosting the October Community Diners for our clients in Warkworth.
