You will have: the opportunity to connect with other people and make new friends; share in the laughter and fun times; the chance to be involved in Centre activities; up-to-date information and receive interesting Newsletters; venue hire benefits; the right to input into who is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Association through the election of a Management Committee. The Association s Annual General Meeting will be held on September 14th. It is essential that your membership is current if you wish to vote, stand for the Committee or have your say in the Centre s management. 2 Neighbourhood News June-July 2016 page 2 Connect on Chatline The FN Ukes group meets at the Neighbourhood Centre each Tuesday morning commencing at 8.30am. A gold coin donation is appreciated and contributions go to the purchase of resources for the group and use of the Centre s facilities Phone for more info. The Marlin Coast Line Dancers meet at the Neighbourhood Centre each Tuesday morning between and 11.30am. Come along and have some fun, meet new people and get those feet moving. $2 per person for use of the premises Phone for more information Are you over 50 years of age and enjoy talking to others then CHATLINE is for you? Each Monday between 9.30 and 10.30am you can enjoy connecting with other people by telephone at no cost to you. Everyone is linked up to a central telephone line; what a great way to have a bit of a yarn! If this sounds like something you would enjoy or you know of someone who might benefit from this activity, you can call the Neighbourhood Centre on THE MARLIN COAST NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CAIRNS LIBRARIES, INTRODUCES TECH SAVVY SENIORS QUEENSLAND FREE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING FOR SENIORS Learn skills in: The Neighbourhood Centre provide limited financial assistance to people experiencing financial crisis with Woolworths Essentials Cards and BP Fuel Cards. We also assist with Prescriptions. Support is available each Monday morning by appointment. People living in the area bounded by the Barron River and north to Ellis Beach, as well as Smithfield, Caravonica, and Lake Placid, are eligible. The appointment book opens on Wednesday afternoons for the following Monday. The Garden is nurtured by a tireless group of energetic volunteer gardeners. JUNE 15 each year is the day designated by the United Nations as the international day of action when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse of older people. WEAAD is represented by the colour purple which denotes wisdom, dignity, independence and creativity. During the week ending the 15 th June we are calling for all communities across Queensland, to join the rest of the world in going purple for WEAAD. The week leading up to the 15 th June is a time when individuals and organisations can come together to raise awareness of elder abuse and to celebrate human rights. go purple The Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre invites you to a FREE Morning Tea and Lunch on this day of action. WHEN: Tuesday June 14th commencing at 10.45am WHERE: 205 Reed Road Trinity Park Phone for further information The Neighbourhood Centre celebrates Australia s Biggest Morning Tea with a Mad Hatter s Tea Party. Around 40 people joined in the fun and frivolity of making balloon pets and hats. The morning tea table groaned under the weight of delicious cakes, slices, scones and other delectable delights. Almost $600 was raised on the day with all funds going to the Cancer Council for research.

The Golden Phoenix Tai Chi School instructor Julie Hutchin runs Tai Chi classes at the Centre each Tuesday afternoon, enabling participants to develop a deeper understanding of the principles of Tai Chi for mind, body and spirit incorporating personal balance. The Neighbourhood Centre is offering short courses for the beginner and the more advanced. The classes are carried out in a small group environment and run for four to six weeks depending on numbers. The courses are non-accredited and are led by a qualified and experienced instructor. Cost is $77 per person for a six-week course and weekly instalments are accepted. Want to know more?
