We all have so many things to be thankful for our health; our families; this great country that we live in. The fact that we are a part of the greatest service and humanitarian organization in the world speaks for itself. Now is the time to be working with your community bread baskets, food pantries, churches and other organizations to help the less fortunate in our local areas. Be thankful that you have a warm home, comfortable bed, hearty meals there are a lot of people who do not. I would like to say something about the tragedy that unfolded in Pittsburgh s Squirrel Hill this past weekend. My family lives in the northern panhandle of WV, about 40 miles from the site of the shooting. We have visited Squirrel Hill several times for dinner and festivals that take place there. The people there are kind, friendly and very special. This should never have happened. Please keep the victims and their families in your prayers. 2 A Message from 1st VDG Lion Bill I have been very busy the last few days. Too busy, in fact, to get done some of the things I m supposed to do as your vice governor. But, who isn t? We re all busy! Many of us still work, while those of us who are retired usually look for things to do. I hate to fish and I can t hit a golf ball straight, so I took on a retirement job, because I thought I needed something to do! Kathy and I like to travel to see the kids and the grandkids. We are very involved in our church, as are many Lions. Then, too, are the unimportant things like mowing the lawn, doing laundry, fixing cars, and running the vacuum. So, I wondered. How much are Lions giving in service to their communities. I looked it up. So far for this year Lions in District 29-L have devoted 4,984 hours to service. That figure is for just three months with only 30 of 54 clubs reporting. How great is that? As DG Gary puts it, Service is Key! The Lions of District 29-L live up to that. Following are some figures from last year: Lion hours, 17,909; dollars donated, $355,684; people served, 143,656. Obviously, none of us think that we are too busy to offer our services to others. That is why Lions is not only the largest service organization in the world, it is the best. A Message from District Leadership Chair PDG Bernice This month I would like to share some food for thought from various business leaders across the country. Think about how these comments might apply to your leadership roles within your Lions organization. Leaders should instill confidence in their teams - helps team members to embrace uncertainty and look at setbacks as an opportunity to adjust and try again. It s important to create an environment where your team can run with ideas and respectfully debate them. The best leaders stoke a fiery passion behind team members ideas and convictions. There is a difference between being a player, a player-coach and being a coach. The most effective leaders are those who can own up to their mistakes. You, as a current leader, and those in the District thinking about taking on a leadership role, should take every opportunity available to learn and network when they are offered. The West Virginia Lions Leadership Retreat is coming up at the end of January 2019 in Flatwoods. Those who are developing this year s retreat have adjusted the amount of time for the retreat and the cost of the retreat to make things easier for those who would like to take the opportunity to attend. All Districts will be offering First Timer Scholarships so be on the lookout for those applications in District newsletters. Our District is always looking for Lions to move forward in the organization. These learning opportunities can be a powerful tool, not just in Lionism, but in your work life as well. LCIF recently offered a Lion Leader Checklist. You may have seen it. It offers some excellent suggestions for Leaders at the District and Club level to promote and participate in Campaign 100. If you haven t already seen it, here it is again. Lion Leader Checklist. Is Yours Complete? Encourage participation, which is essential! Educate friends, family and business associates about Campaign 100 and about how Lions are changing the world through service and our eight global causes. Note: visit lionsclubs.org to get more information. Give! The easiest way to raise funds is to first give yourself and then ask others to join you in supporting Campaign 100. More materials designed to make your leadership easier and more impactful are added regularly! Encourage your club to become a Model Club. 3 SAYRE GRAHAM MEMORIAL DEDICATED A memorial to the civic minded and longtime Chester resident, Sayre Graham was dedicated on Saturday, September 29. The memorial was a joint project between the Bob Milby VFW Post 6450 and the Chester Lions Club. The memorial is located at Virginia Gardens Memorial Park at the corner of 6 th Street and Carolina Avenue in Chester, alongside the gazebo that Sayre helped construct in the early 1980 s. Lions Club President Bob Milner provided remarks regarding Sayre and his service to the community. He also thanked the VFW for funding the project and members of the Lions Club for pulling the project together. Sayre s son expressed his appreciation for the memorial and shared some memories of his father. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Sayre served in the European Theater during WW II and received three Bronze Stars. He was an active member of the Chester American Legion Post 121 and VFW Post Sayre was a longtime devoted member and a past president of the Chester Lions Club. He was also a distinguished past District Governor of district 29-L of the West Virginia Lions and served in several offices at the district level as well. He was a master carpenter for the Finley Brothers Construction Company in Chester, whose work left an imprint all over the area, including the former Waterford Park Race Track. Sayre s proudest professional moment came when he completed construction of the VFW in Chester while operating his own construction company. Later in life he worked for the Potters Construction Company in East Liverpool. He was a graduate of the Chester High School class of 1939 and served as class president. Special guests at the ceremony included his daughter, Diane Sterbutzel of Vienna, VA.; his son, Sayre Graham of East Liverpool; VFW Post 6450 Quartermaster, Joe Capito; Chester Mayor, Rex Cowey; Chester councilmen, John Woodruff, and Steve Shuman; several Lions Club members; and other friends and residents of Chester. We are trying to restart an old tradition of displaying poppies on Veterans day. If you see a poppy display. Support a veteran, buy a poppy and wear it proudly. We Serve World Wide Diabetes Day Did you know diabetes is the fastest growing disease in the world today? It affects all races, genders, and ages. It is estimated that by year 2045 this fast growing disease will affect 629 million people. Mark your club calendar for November 14 as the world wide Diabetes Day. Lions across the global are being asked to do a service project for our priority challenge, Diabetes. Lions International is partnering with the International Diabetes Federation to help prevent diabetes and improve the lives of those already affected. The two organizations agreed to the following goals: Prevent diabetes and improve the quality of life for those already affected. Raise diabetes awareness by providing education. Develop holistic diabetes-service projects. Elevate the diabetes issues onto the national and global agenda. Increase access to diabetes care, medication and diagnostic equipment. Go to fightdiabetes.lionsclubs.org and learn more about the Diabetes challenge and how you can enter to win a FitBit Charge 2 during the monthly Diabetes Service Journey Contest. Remember, after you have completed your project report it to LCI. PDG Linda Leasure 29L GST MD29 GST Warwood Lions Club invites you to our District Governor's Night! At Corpus Christi School. November 12, :00 PM Social hour 6:30 Dinner Corpus Christi School 1512 Warwood Ave. Wheeling WV Lion Fiona Dundas, of the Lesage Club, helped pack 1019 boxes for Operation Christmas Child on Saturday Oct. 13. The boxes packed will go to countries that are closed to missionaries, and cannot contain any religious material. This is the 7th year that this group ha packed boxes. District Governors Visit The Wheeling Island Lions Club will be hosting District Governor Lion Gary Pitcock on Monday, December 3, 2018, 6:00 pm Social with dinner to follow. The menu consist of baked pork chops and pumpkin pie. It will be catered by Judy Rebich for $10 per person. RSVP to Lion Kathy Syphers at: or ksyphers@comcast.net by Friday, November 30th. The meeting will be held at St. Luke s Episcopal Church.

5 The Wheeling Island Lions Club will hold a Dining to Donate evening on Monday, November 5 at Texas Roadhouse at the Highlands (43 Fort Henry Road Triadelphia). The event will take place from 4-8 p.m. Mention the fundraiser and Texas Roadhouse will donate a percentage of your total food purchase to the Wheeling Island Lions Club. Proceeds from the Dining to Donate will be Helen Keller said, The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart. The students at the West Virginia Schools for the Blind and Deaf have touched my heart and I am sure they will touch yours, too. West Virginia Lions support the students through various outreach programs throughout the year. Several activities are planned and I invite you to join them. On November 6th, the Deaf and Blind Recreation Program participants and students will go bowling then be treated to pizza, drinks and ice cream. There will be 60+ students attending along with 10/12 chaperones. The students enjoy bowling and it is a fun time for all. In December, students will have an outing to McDonald s, which is located across the street from the school. This tasty and fun activity also provides teachable moments in how to order food at a fast food restaurant and spending within a budget for the older students. February 19th and 20th is the ski trip at Timberlake Resort in Canaan Valley. How can your club help? There are numerous ways. First by participating in one of these events. Second by donating to this cause. During this giving season, my club has always sponsored a child through a local non-profit organization. This year I am asking my club and yours to sponsor a child at the WV Schools for Blind and Deaf so programs like the ones above can continue and new ones added. Another way you can help, provide a new ideas for activities for students. If you would like to know more I am more than happy to share with you or answer any questions. 6 CHESTER LIONS DONATE TO ALLISON ELEMENTARY SENSORY ROOM The Chester Lions Club was very happy to recently make a $1500 donation to Allison Elementary School to be used towards equipment and appurtenances for the school s Sensory Room. Lion Jodie Juszczak suggested the idea a while back, when President Bob Milner asked for ideas on how the club could help the community. Following Jodie s suggestion, Lion Marshall Hobbs and his wife, Rosemary, coordinated with the school and arranged for a brief presentation at the club s meeting on September 27 by Allison s Assistant Principal Jennifier Marchese and Special Education Teacher Ashley Turley. During the presentation Jennifer and Ashley talked about the needs of children with learning disabilities and explained how the needs vary between the children. For example, one child may respond to lights and noise, while another prefers quiet. They also discussed and demonstrated some of the items they currently use. In response to a question they talked about some of the items that they could use to improve the learning experience for the children. The sensory room at Allison also doubles as an occupation therapy room. Following the presentation the club voted to make the $1500 donation. The Lions Club is also a Platinum Sponsor for the school s Positive Behavior Program. The Barboursville Lions Club has a history of presenting grave markers to spouses of deceased Lions club members. A marker for former Lions Orman Hall was present to his wife, Cheryl Hall at our October 23 meeting. She was accompanied by her two children, Kelly Carter and Kevin Hall. The Barboursville Lions Club participated in the Peace Poster Contest. Lion member Angela Webb, art teacher at Barboursville Middle School, submitted 15 posters to be judged by the Barboursville Lions Club members. 7 CHESTER LIONS RECOGNIZES 45 YEAR MEMBER The Chester Lions Club recognized Alan Butch Snyder for 45 years of service to the club at our meeting on October 25. Butch joined the club in October of 1973, and has served in several offices of the club, including President in Pictured is club President Bob Milner (left) presenting Butch (right) with an engraved clock commemorating his service. 8 Nikki Mattingly Club Sponsor Clay Battelle Leos The Leos in Western Monongalia County stages a Pink Out for cancer awareness each year. Students raise money by hosting raffles and walking laps around the school track at Clay Battelle High School. Every year Leos pick a person from the community who was diagnosed with the disease, and every year, a portion of the proceeds it raises for cancer research goes to that person s medical expenses. The club s sponsor, Nikki Mattingly wanted to show the kids the importance of paying it forward, being kind to others and how cancer puts a shadow on every family. ~Ramona Sago, Leo Chairperson~ Western Mon 5th Annual Trunk or Treat along with the Clay Battelle Leos..

9 2019 Leadership Retreat Please be sure to save the dates of January 25-26, 2019 for the next Leadership Retreat, which will be held at the Days Inn in Flatwoods, WV. The Retreat committees have been busy at work making sure the upcoming Retreat will be beneficial and informative for all attendees. Seminars are being planned by PID Joyce Middleton, Lion Martin Middletown, PDG Wendy Cain, PDG Michael Gibbs, Beth Slade from Leader Dog, Bethanne Telford, Lion Daniel Elkins, PID Bob Browning, SVDG John Mason and other contributing Lions. Some of topics will include New Voices, LCIF, Computer Labs for MyLion and social media, Storytelling, Harness the Leader in You, You Want Me to do What?, You re a Leader but You don t Know It, How to Recruit and Retain Younger Lions and more to be announced. Registration fee will be $100 for both days or $75 for Saturday only. Call the Days Inn at for room Reservations that start at $89 for one or two people and $99 for three or four people. There will be a complimentary breakfast for those staying at the hotel. A registration form can be found in this newsletter. The election will be held the same as our election on August 6, The qualifications for Second Vice District Governor are: (a) Be an Active Member in good standing of a chartered Lions club in good standing. (b) Have served or will have served at the time he/she takes office as second vice district governor: (i) As officer of a Lions club for a full term or major portion thereof. (ii) As a member of the district cabinet for a full term or major portion thereof. (iii) With none of the above being accomplished concurrently. 12 We will be having a Silent Auction at the upcoming WV Lions Leadership Retreat to be held on January 25-26, 2019 at Days Inn, Flatwoods, WV. To make this happen we are asking the assistance of EVERY club attending. If each club would donate one item, there will be a great variety to bid on when you come to the Leadership Retreat. Possible ideas would be: A handmade craft item Special piece of glassware Specialty or theme baskets Gift certificates or packages It is hoped the items donated would be enticing enough that YOU will be willing to consider bidding. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help defray the costs of the Leadership Retreat so that everyone in the multiple district will consider attending. This is a time to gather and grow as leaders, as well as enjoy the fellowship of Lion friends from around the multiple district and neighboring states. We hope you will consider this request. 13 Creating Global Citizens Across Cultures and Around the World The Youth Camp and Exchange Program (YCE) brings the ideal of global citizenship to life. Each year this program gives thousands of young people the opportunity to experience life in other cultures and gain new understanding of the world through travel abroad. Unlike some youth exchange programs, YCE does not involve academic study or employment. Instead, participants are encouraged to use this travel opportunity to represent their home countries and share their own culture while learning about and embracing a new one, forging the way to becoming young ambassadors for peace and international understanding. YCE is composed of various Lions Youth Exchanges and/or Lions Youth Camps arranged by Lions clubs around the world. A Lions Youth Exchange, or host family stay, can be arranged independent of a Lions youth camp in hundreds of countries where there are Lions clubs and typically lasts between four and six weeks. Become A Host Family Is Hosting Right for Me? Are you interested in learning about other cultures and ways of life while sharing your own customs and experiences? Are open-mindedness, tolerance and cultural competence of high importance to you? Do you have a desire to contribute towards peace, international understanding, and the creation of young global citizens? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may enjoy being a host family for the Youth Camp and Exchange Program (YCE)! You may contact the West Virginia Multiple District Youth Camp & Exchange Chairperson: Lion Henry Krautwurst at HenryK248@gmail.com Benefits of Hosting Hosting a young person from another country is a fulfilling experience and has many benefits: You experience the joy of sharing your culture and daily customs You learn about your visitor's customs and culture You open a new world of possibilities and thinking to a young person You make a new friend - maybe a friend for life What to Expect Youth participants are usually between the ages of 16 and 21, and come from any of the more than 200 countries and geographic locations where there are Lions clubs. He/she will have completed an admissions process before being accepted to participate in the program. He/she may or may not know the language of your country but will have a desire to learn. Host families should include the participant in their daily routine, including family meals, as YCE is intended to be an immersive learning experience. Local excursions are not required of host families, but the host Lions club often arranges for participants to visit local points of interest and engage in social activities, like picnics and get-togethers. Host Family Eligibility The host Lions club must approve all host families. To be eligible to become a host family you must: Have regular contact with youth of the approximate age of the participant Be familiar with Lions clubs and the goals of YCE Be able to provide a bed and meals for your guest Follow all local laws related to youth protection Youth Exchange Committee News 1. We will be offering five $1,400 travel scholarships for the summer of Information is available from any member of the Youth Exchange Committee, through high school counselors and the MD29 website - under the programs tab 3. The program depends on support through the Parade of Checks and families willing to host a student for 4-6weeks during the summer 4.
