1 District 29-L Newsletter October 2018 Gary Pitcock District Governor Service is Key to Success A Message from our District Governor Here we are, starting into the fall season, and temperatures are starting to cool. As I sit here comprising this article, I think of all the Lions of 29L and I am so very grateful for each and every one of you. In our journey thus far this year, we have met many Lions that we had not met before. I want to say how great it was to finally meet our re-districted Lions from the southern part of our beautiful state. I cannot express how great it was to meet you and to enjoy your stories of your accomplishments over the years. I would especially like to congratulate the Barboursville Lions and Barboursville Leo Clubs on their project Brail Trail. These young Leos exemplify the true meaning of being a Lion. I would also like to send a big shout out to the Moundsville Leo Club for the assistance they gave to a family in dire need in their community. All these young people in all our Leo Clubs are the epitome of what Lionism is all about. Lionism is alive in 29L and thank you so much!! October is Childhood Cancer Awareness month this is one of our focus projects for this year. There is not a day that goes by that I don t thank God for having a healthy child. Unfortunately, there are too many parents who cannot say that. There is nothing more precious than a child and to see them struggling is just devastating. So, with the help of LCI and you just maybe we can help with research in bringing an end to childhood cancer. October is also Vision Awareness month another of our signature projects. October is traditionally one of our busiest months for Lions activities and service projects. May God Bless you all and again, thanks for all you do. 2 A Message fr0m Leadership Chair PDG Bernice In preparing for these articles I have been reading different pieces on leadership not specifically Lions, but leadership in the business world as well. We have been reading a lot of articles about how to recruit millennials, Gen X ers and younger for our Lions Clubs. Today I would like to share some ideas that concern our older, more experienced members. In her article Tips for Leading the Late Career Employee, Jennifer V. Miller focuses on the fact that the workforce is getting grayer and that less than 6% of companies have a specific plan to address their aging workforce. I would like to adapt some of this author s suggestions to the Lions organization. Chip Conley, author of Wisdom at Work, the Making of a Modern Elder asserts that there exists a generation of older workers with invaluable skills high emotional intelligence, good judgement born out of decades of experience, specialized knowledge and a vast network of contacts. All ages can contribute in a positive way to a team, but in different ways. There is increasing data that shows that the presence of older workers (Lions) increases the productivity of younger workers (Lions) due to the elder s advice and guidance. Younger individuals should ask experienced ones for feedback on why something didn t work in the past and then they should work together to develop an improved plan to try again. Try reverse mentoring pairing experienced and novice colleagues so they may learn from each other. As a leader, set a standard that doesn t tolerate ageism and instead, values life experiences. Create a list of people who can be a model for wisdom and lifelong learning. Invite Lions from that list to speak at clubs and, if willing, invite them to mentor other Lions. We need to take advantage of the leaders within our organization, both elderly and younger experienced and new to the organization. Remember: Leaders don t create followers, they create more leaders Tom Peters. 1st VDG Bill s Message In recent weeks I have been in conversation with Lions whose clubs have been losing members, or have members who are not participating in club activities. While some of these Lions are willing to keep their clubs going, others seem ready to give it up. Whichever category they fall into, the anxiety and discouragement is easy to understand. I, too, belong to a small club. We have nine members. A few years ago, we had only six. Some of us were ready to quit. But one Lion convinced the rest that no matter how little we did, it was more than would be done if we weren t there. I m reminded of the story of the starfish. If you haven t heard it, it goes like this. There was a little boy walking on the beach. There had been a terrible storm and the tide had washed thousands of starfish onto the beach where they lay half buried in the sand and drying in the sun. The boy began to throw them one by one into the surf, thus saving their lives. A man walked by and asked what the boy was doing. The boy answered and the man said, But there are thousands of them and only one of you. What difference can it make? The boy picked up a starfish, tossed it into the waves, and said, It made a difference to that one! We don t need to be great in numbers to make a difference. We just need to be on the beach. Where there s a need, there s a Lion. 1stVDG Bill

WEIRTON LIONS CLUB Wouldn't you and your club please help in funding this worthwhile DISTRICT GOVERNORS NIGHT campaign. Please remember that 100% of your donations go to Tuesday, October 16, 2018 fund grants and programs. 5 We Serve By MD GST Linda Leasure The Global Service Framework focuses the efforts of Lions and Leos on five service areas with the goal of tripling our humanitarian impact by serving 200 million people per year by 2021.These service areas include: Vision, Diabetes, Hunger, Environment and Pediatric cancer. Fairmont Lions Club Provides Baby Cribs The Fairmont Lions Club purchased two baby cribs for the Union Mission as a gift to Fairmont as a part of Lions Clubs International s Centennial Community Legacy Projects program. The completion of this project will impact the lives of families with children. Prior to this project, the Union Mission lacked safe baby cribs for mothers or families with babies. Rev. George Batten, Executive Director of West Virginia Rescue Ministries, Inc., said, It s not just the parents that are homeless. Sometimes it s the babies and they need adequate beds. Virginia Gallion, president of the Fairmont Lions Club, indicated that she felt this was a much needed gift to the Union Mission and to the Fairmont community as a way for the club to participate in Lions Clubs International s Centennial Celebration. Fairmont Lions Club s Legacy Project was completed as a part of Lions Clubs International s Centennial Celebration to commemorate its 100 th anniversary in Rev. Batten estimated that, in coming years, these two cribs should help around 20 people. Club president Virginia Gallion drove the screws to affix a plaque to each crib noting the gift from the Lions club. Photo caption: 1. Fairmont Lions Club president Virginia Gallion (OK) drives the screw affixing the plate indicating the baby crib was donated by the Fairmont Lions Club. How can you help achieve the service goals listed above? First, make sure your club has a Service Chairperson. Your Service Chairperson should note the following months and work with the club to coordinate an activity in each of the following: November-Diabetes Awareness Month January-Hunger Awareness Month February-Childhood Cancer Awareness Month April-Environment Awareness Month Many clubs routinely accomplish these projects each year but fail to report them to LCI. Reporting is the key for success in reaching our goal. The Service Chairperson can now report service projects. The Club Secretary position is one of the most active roles within the club. Check with your club Secretary and determine if he/ she would like for the Service Chair to take care of service reporting. Working together, much can be accomplished! The Mt. Olivet Lions Cordially Invite You to Join Us as We Host District Governor Gary Pitcock Thursday, October 4, 2018 Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Rt. 88, Sherrard, West Virginia Social: 6:00 pm Dinner: 6:30 pm Menu: Baked Steak Price: $10.00 per Person Need ideas? 6 The Wellsburg Lions participated in the annual Fourth of July celebration in Wellsburg by selling sno -cones. The highlight of the event is during the parade when the members sell sno-cones to the crowd lining the parade route. The concession brought in a profit of $ for the week long event. This is more sno-cones sold than the population of Wellsburg. Pictures: Group of Wellsburg Lions in front of the sno-cone trailer. Second picture: Lions Rob Morris and Jason Fletcher selling sno-cones at the parade. The Paden City Lions Club is currently looking for a buyer for their Dime Pitch Stand. They are asking $3000 for the stand and about 20,000 pieces of flatware and 40,000 Corning Ware cups. Contact the Paden City club at padencitylionsclub@gmail.com if interested.

8 An Essay from Youth Exchange Student Amy Frosch During my trip to Italy I got to visit three different countries- San Marino, Italy, and Vatican City- also some major cities- Florence, Venice, and Rome- meet new friends from twelve other countries, and enjoy every type of pasta Italy could offer. I loved my experience to Italy so much and I would love to travel more in the future. My first host family allowed me to see the cities of Giulianova (their summer home) and Teramo, experience their lifestyle, and enjoy the typical food of their area. I have lots of great memories with my host siblings and their friends that I will cherish forever. My family was super nice especially when they organized for me to see Lily (the other American) before the camp, visited me at the beach during the camp, and came to the final dinner of my camp. My second host family allowed me to see Bologna, Florence, and Ravenna. I loved how Federica (my host sister) would translate for me at the dinner table so I could be a part of the family more. They were so nice to welcome me into their home when their eighteen year old daughter was off on exchange. Overall, I loved both of my host families and if I ever make it back to Italy I will definitely make a stop to see them. At the camp, there were twelve campers including myself from all different countries. The campers came from Germany, America, Brazil, Finland, Mexico, Sweden, Hungary, Belgium, France, and Turkey. The first day we went to Venice by boat and we walked around the city to see the main buildings, all the gondolas, and the typical bridge views of the canals. We stopped at Murano Island to watch the famous glass blowing demonstration. We visited Ravenna to learn the correct way to make mosaics, the history of mosaics, and we made a tile for ourselves as well. We had two days at the beach to relax, swim, and play volleyball with all the campers which started lots of laughs. We visited San Marino which was unique because the city was built from the top of the mountain down. San Marino was probably my favorite city. It was nice that we could visit another country while in Italy and learn about their government. We took a journey in the Frasassi cave by crawling through the cave. We spent a day in Teramo to see the old and new churches. It was awesome to have the World Cup to watch and have a camper from France to celebrate their victory. In Giulianova we raced in go-karts which became a very competitive experience. One day we went rock climbing on the side of one of the biggest mountains in Italy. We went to Aqualand waterpark which was a fun day to enjoy while in the heat. The leader of the camp was a part of the Italian army so one day he had us doing survival situations such as capsizing a car in water, making a fire with flint, using night vision googles, and shooting an arrow from a bow. The last day we spent running around Rome to see the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and the Coliseum. Thank you for allowing me to have this opportunity of a lifetime. I truly enjoyed spending time in Italy site seeing, meeting friends that will last forever, and also learning the culture. I am blessed that the Lions Club of West Virginia picked me to experience such a great adventure.
