1 District 29-L Newsletter September 2018 Gary Pitcock District Governor Service is Key to SucA Message from our District Governor This year is moving so very fast! it s September already! We have been to a good number of clubs so far and have seen the awesome enthusiasm throughout the District. The Lions in 29L make me so proud and you should be proud of yourselves. PDG Bernice and I had the pleasure of meeting with International 1st Vice President Dr. Choi and his wife at the WVU Eye Institute. He was amazed at everything that is being done at the Institute. We had lunch and we spoke about different ideas on recruiting new members, as well as, new clubs. He is very knowledgeable and personable and has a great outlook on the future of Lionism. As President Gudrun has said, we MUST go beyond the horizon focusing on membership, discovering new leaders, promoting Lionism and share our stories. Reach inside yourselves for guidance and motivation. 1st VDG Bill, PDG Bernice (District GLT) and I will be traveling to clubs to talk with you, hear your ideas and listen to your needs. Please let us know what you re thinking and what plans you have. From Helen Keller The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart. Keep the Lion spirit in your hearts and carry on! Thanks for all you do! 2 Over the last two months, I have had the privilege to travel with DG Gary on his visits. I have also attended a few zone meetings. These have been great experiences for me. I have had a chance to meet Lions whom I haven t met before, and to reunite with Lions I have known for years. All of this has resulted in the confirmation of something I have always known. Lions are really great people. In my travels I have heard about projects that clubs have already done. I have heard about projects that clubs plan to do. And this is only August! The size of the club doesn t matter. Every club is engaged in one way or another in its community. Big clubs, little clubs, all clubs are important, and all are fulfilling their roles with service to their communities. This year is going to be a great year for District 29L. And that is all because of you. All I can say is Keep it up! It is my honor and privilege to be with you as we continue to show others why Lions is the number one service organization in the world. Speaking of others, how many others have you invited to join your club? Sometimes we need some help in this area. If you think you do, give me a call, or , and I will make myself and my team available to get you the help you need. We have increased our membership before. There s no reason to think we can t do it again. 1stVDG Bill A Message from Leadership Chair PDG Bernice Pitcock Leadership Brent Gleeson, a former Navy Seal, offers the following 4 ways for leaders to make decisions. Command: leaders make decisions without consulting their teams. This is effective when things are moving quickly and the team is looking for immediate guidance. Usually, there is no time to consult with the team about the best course of action. Collaborative: Leaders gather their team and request feedback and insight. The leader still makes the final decision. This also known as evidenced based decision making. Its important that you avoid surrounding yourself with people who always agree with you. You need people who will strongly argue the other side. Consensus: This is done more like a democratic vote leaders gather the team and everyone votes. Majority rules. This can work well when the decision affects the entire team, but won t immediately affect the bottom line. Convenience: This is the complete delegation of a decision. This can measure the decision making abilities of your managers and can empower the team. You can build a better management team- giving them confidence as their responsibilities grow. This is a great way to avoid the we ve always done it this way trap. Remember: TRUE LEADERS DON T CREATE FOLLOWERS THEY CREATE MORE LEADERS

3 The Friendly Lions Club is proud to announce the induction of two new members at its meeting on August 16, Lion Bobbin Pardine and Lion Ryan Banta were inducted by Zone 4 Chair Tony Vandenburg. Both Lion Bobbin and Lion Ryan were sponsored by Lion Dan Heintzman DIABETES AWARENESS As Diabetes Chair for 29L, I have been exploring the multitude of information about Diabetes on the Lions websites. The Lions Club has stepped up and made Diabetes a Sustainable Development Goal. I would love to visit your local club with some information I have gathered. I encourage clubs to present an awareness activity in their communities and report it to Lions Club International. I hope you continue supporting the initiative by donating to LCIF. 4 Calling ALL Lions!! Lions have taken up the challenge of promoting reading worldwide. It is important work, aimed at lifting millions of people out of hardship. Learning to read lets people acquire the skills and knowledge they need "to overcome poverty, disease, and other social ills," said Past International President Wayne A. Madden, who served from Literacy, he said, is "a gift Lions can give to children and adults around the world." In the United States, 21 million people can't read, and millions more have reading skills so limited that they have difficulty with common tasks such as reading signs or workplace instructions. To report your clubs Reading Action Program project, please send your information to Arlene Amos LCIF Our Communities, Our World We are Lions and we serve our communities but we also serve the world. LCIF has provided 50 years of service to our local communities as well as communities throughout the world. LCIF helps by 1. Preserving sight 2. Providing disaster relief 3. Supporting youth 4. Meeting humanitarian needs All of this takes money. LCIF is starting a new fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $300 million over the next three years. I am asking all clubs to please be a part of this campaign. Also, I am asking all Lions as individuals to make a contribution. A gift of $100 only amounts to $0.27 per day. Please do this. If you need any information on how to make a contribution, please contact me. Also I am available to come to your club to make a presentation about LCIF. Thank You John Wensyel LCIF Chair 29-L West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation Inc. Our vision is to be the premier provider of sight preservation services for West Virginians when no other means of assistance exits. We envision an environment where no deserving and qualified individual goes without needed help. We need your financial help to continue helping our WV neighbors. We work closely with the WV Eye Institute in Morgantown to provide services. Please every club and every Lion give to WVLSCF. 8 Most of us know Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is the charitable fundraising and grant-making arm of our global organization. We know that LCIF has provided funds to help with disasters in West Virginia, helped fund our work with the West Virginia University Eye Institute, and provided matching grants for other projects in West Virginia. Many of our clubs regularly donate to LCIF, as do some individual Lions. Thanks to the generosity of Lions around the world, LCIF has been able to grant more than $1 billion to Lions service projects and partnerships around the world. Our Foundation is highly respected and allows the service of Lions to be extended and magnified on a global scale. Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service is the Foundation s next transformational campaign. Through Campaign 100 we will raise $300 million to increase our service impact, fight diabetes, and expand our global causes. Campaign 100 will allow us to serve more than 200 million individuals per year by 2021 and ensure that Lions have the resources we need to expand our global causes and impact. You will be hearing more about this campaign during these three years. Even as we look back and celebrate what Lions have accomplished over the past 100 years, we look to the future and see that the needs of the world have never been greater. We see new challenges. What if 100% of Lions (not just clubs) contributed to this global effort? What if each Lion gave $100 a year--$2 per week to make a difference? Cause Vision Youth Diabetes Humanitarian Efforts Disaster Environment Childhood Cancer Hunger Impact $100 funds two cataract surgeries $100 provides the Lions Quest social emotional learning curriculum to an entire classroom $100 provides diabetes screening for 18 at-risk individuals $100 provides the measles vaccination to 100 kids $100 provides immediate relief to four people in the wake of a natural disaster $100 provides 14 people with access to clean water $100 helps purchase equipment that will help diagnose or treat eight children who have cancer $100 helps provide regular access to food to 14 disabled, elderly, low-income or homeless people Each club has a club LCIF coordinator. If no other member has been elected or appointed to the position, the immediate past president is the club coordinator. Club coordinators will be trained by the district LCIF coordinators in the coming months. We have a big job to do, but with every Lion helping, we will do our part in this important campaign.
