1 ARC ADVOCATE The Arc of Dunn County Newsletter March/April 2015 What You Need to Know About the State Budget Several self-advocates and Arc staff attended the State Budget Training put on by the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities, Disability Rights Wisconsin, and People First Wisconsin on Tuesday, March 3rd in Eau Claire. In addition to learning why the State Budget is important here are a few other things we learned What is in the State Budget There are many things included in the state budget, but here are a few that would have a profound impact on individuals with disabilities and their families. Elimination of the IRIS program Family Care will change to include medical care Most or all of Family Care s MCO s (managed care organizations) will not stay in business It is possible that only two large insurance companies will replace current MCO s Aging and Disability Resource Centers may not operate like they do now in our communities The Arc of Dunn County is dedicated to providing advocacy and quality services that enable individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential, enhance their quality of life, promote independence and be active participants in their community. As much as $19 million will be cut from Personal Care Talk to Your Legislators It is important for us to talk with our legislators about our concerns related to the budget. Following the craft time they enjoyed some Valentine themed treats to celebrate the holiday! The Arc s Services The Arc of Dunn County offers several services to individuals with disabilities, their families and our community. Residential and Respite Services The Arc of Dunn County offers personalized housing options and care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Guardianship Services The Arc of Dunn County provides guardianship services for the person or their estate. The Arc members and community program participants have grown to enjoy volunteering at Comforts of Home and look forward to it. This has been such a fun opportunity for everyone involved and we are excited to look for new ways to partner with them for future events and volunteer opportunities. A big thank you to Julie Colson, Activity Coordinator at Comforts of Home, for working with us to create these volunteer opportunities. He will be missed! Arc Action Arc Action is a health and wellness program designed to help encourage individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to take charge of their health. Arc Action involves a variety of activities including classes on healthy habits, group workouts, and healthy cooking sessions. Arc Action meets on Monday afternoons from 3-4:30pm at Alliance Church in Menomonie through Monday, May 4th. There is a small fee to participate based on sessions remaining through May. No Arc Action the last Monday of each month due to Art at The Arc. Art at The Arc Art at The Arc is a monthly art class that meets at The Arc of Dunn County office the last Monday of each month from 6:30-8pm. The class is open to anyone who would like to learn more about art and get creative! Upcoming classes on March 30th and April 27th. Classes cost $6 each. Purchase a 5 class punch card for $25 or $20 with an Arc membership and save $1-$2 per class! Participants are invited to bring someone along who is capable of assisting with their needs if needed. Most events are no cost to care providers. Arc Awareness Arc Awareness strives to promote the work of The Arc of Dunn County and to increase community understanding and support for individuals with disabilities and their families. Arc Awareness programs include Sibshops, Arc FAMS and other advocacy activities.
