This has been a time of personal growth and achievement doing things I never dreamed in a million years I would be able or even want to do. I want to thank all of you for supporting me these past 3 years because without you in my corner there is no way I could have led meetings, host not 1 but 2 National visits, speak at City Council, or make my movie debut by making a video about Assistance League of Pomona Valley that was streamed on Facebook and shown on Public T.V. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President and I look forward to my next challenge as your Philanthropic VP. Denise Delgado, Roger Krechmery, Jane Hubbard, Carole Lyles, Lynne Kirchhoff, Mary Hernandez and I all met with the Representative from Denti-Cal. This will be a daunting task to fill out the Application and pull together all necessary paperwork to get the ball rolling. We hope by accepting Denti-Cal our numbers in the Dental Clinic will increase and by default also create more awareness for Operation School Bell. Other chapters have gone this route and have had great success. Another Golf Tournament is in the books and what a great day it was for everyone. We couldn t have asked for better weather and all of our guests had a spectacular day. René Sippel, Laura Romero, and Cathy Rockwell outdid themselves and most definitely deserve a standing ovation along with all members and volunteers who came out and showed their support. I can t wait to see what they have in store for us at our 20th next year. Stay tuned! As we approach the summer months and we all recharge our batteries remember to still check your s regularly for updates on Padua and any fundraising meetings. We may be small but we are a mighty chapter who accomplish quite a bit and are still able to effectively serve our community. Cathy Harden President Page 1

2 MEMBERSHIP Our Annual Luncheon is Tuesday, June 5 th, beginning at 9:30 am (for Voting Members) at Red Hill Country Club. Cost for the luncheon is $40 per person. Payment at the door is fine! Hope to see you there! Dues are due!! Please remit your dues if you haven t already. Hours need to be tabulated prior to Tuesday s annual meeting. Thank you to all of you who kept me up to date on our members who needed a note or two. ~Loie Johnson Have a wonderful summer!! ~ Lynne Kirchhoff DENTAL CENTER The Dental Center serviced 30 clients (including 3 new clients) and provided 66 treatments. They will be open until July 11 th and return September 11 th to begin a new year. A group of members including Cathy, Roger, Jane, Mary and others are completing the extensive application to become Denti-cal providers. Many other Assistance League Chapters have completed this process and have found it to be beneficial to the continuation of their dental centers. Once submitted, the wait time is days. Edith Garcia, a Denti-cal representative has been very supportive in this process. Social at 10: Fun Facts About Summer 1. The first day of summer is between June 20th and June 22nd every year. The first day of summer is called the summer solstice, and the day varies due to the Earth s rotation not exactly reflecting our calendar year. 2. The longest day of the year is on the summer solstice. 3. Watermelon is one of summer s best summer treats. Did you know that watermelons are not a fruit, but a vegetable instead? They belong to the cucumber family of vegetables. 4. The Eiffel tower actually grows in the heat of the summer. Due to the iron expanding, the tower grows about 6 inches every summer. 5. A June fun fact is that the month of June is named after the Roman goddess Juno. 6. For a July fun fact, Roman general Marc Antony named the month of July after Julius Caesar. 7. August was named after Julius Caesar s nephew. He had received the title of Augustus which means reverend. 8. Frisbees, invented in the 1870 s as a pie plate, but in the 1940 s, college students began throwing them around. They have since stopped being used for pie plates and are now a summertime staple. 9. The dog days of summer refer to the dates from July 3rd to August 11th. They are named so after the Sirius the Dog Star. This star is located in the constellation of Canis Major. 10.
