Continuing Intervention(only complete this slide if this is a continuing intervention) Plan 1: Enter amount funded Plan 2: Enter amount funded Plan 3: Enter amount funded Plan 4: $1, Plan 5: $1, Funding Intervention also funded in: Has the intervention made any improvements/changes from past year(s)? X Yes No The scale of the Ironclad Festival has had to change, due to space and accessibility limitations at the venue (Chelsea High School). Less participants were able to take part in the event, but there was no fundamental change to the overall goals of the festival. If the amount requested has changed from the previous year please explain. No change from previous year funded (2016 Plan 5), but down from first year funded (2015 Plan 4) as we were able to re-utilize signage purchased for the first Ironclad Festival.

Key Evaluation Data Please record and include the key evaluation data collected for this intervention Please note you will be expected to provide surveys, graphs, and data to 5HF, more detail is included in a later slide 250 Units of Engagement (no units of engagement for infrastructure) Number of participants (P) = 150 Time each participant worked on or spent at each event (T-in hours) = 2 Number of classes/events held (N) = 1 P x T x N = units of engagement = 300 Note if this is an infrastructure intervention, units of engagement may not be applicable Other measures may include, but are not limited to: Miles of trail maintained, number of people that used the trail per day/weekend (infrastructure interventions) Number of books/maps distributed Number of surveys collected

Goal 1: To provide a family-friendly, free event centered around the pastime of For each goal provide the following information: vintage base ball, which promotes exercise, sportsmanship & enjoyment, in addition to connection with fellow community members. Did the intervention meet specific goals listed on the intervention table? State what you tried to accomplish The 2018 Ironclad Festival did accomplish this goal on July 21, 2018 at Chelsea High School. The event featured base ball matches between six Michigan clubs, from 9:00am until roughly 4:00pm, as well as live music and a lunch break at 1:00pm. There was no charge for admission. The pastime brings together participants and spectators from local communities to both exercise in a dynamic & engaging manner and present an enjoyable and uniting attraction that emphasizes healthy connection & healthy competition. We feel in many ways that type of core sportsmanship we demonstrate is often lacking in other sporting events, amateur & professional. Having participants and spectators of all ages involved is important to us. How did you measure progress towards the goal? The pastime and its local following continues to grow each year. Was the goal attainable? Yes. It would have been more successful with a better weather result, but it did attain this goal in essence. Describe how the goal was relevant to the coalition and community wellness related needs The Ironclad Festival, and the pastime of vintage base ball in general, is an attraction that promotes healthy connection between local residents and is: Inter-generational Local Affordable Accessible

Goal 2: To continue the same essential goals of the Ironclad Festival at all our local For each matches goal provide & practices: the following information: inclusive, * exclude affordable depending and on # engaging of goals entertainment and exercise. We make a special effort to reach out to area senior residents to come enjoy a local attraction that harkens back to a simpler time. Did the intervention meet specific goals listed on the intervention table? State what you tried to accomplish Very much so. We enjoyed another very successful season, our eighth here in Chelsea. In addition to the Ironclad Festival, we another full summer of matches (free to public) and practices open to anyone interested. Over fifty local residents participated actively, and many more as spectators. We hosted another charity fundraiser benefitting Faith In Action, and were able to have a group of senior residents from CRC come to a match in September. The same basic goals of the Ironclad Festival at ALL our events: promoting healthy connection and exercise for community members involved. Affordable, local, inter-generational and accessible. How did you measure progress towards the goal? The continued success of the Monitors & Merries in attracting participants & spectators here in town. Was the goal attainable? Yes. Describe how the goal was relevant to the coalition and community wellness related needs By directly tying into the Move More and Connect With Others in Healthy Ways elements, the intervention addresses Goal #1 of the coalition s plan to increase the number of people who report getting the social and emotion support they need, as well as Goal #2 of increasing the coalition s awareness locally.

Overall were there any major accomplishments? X Yes No The Ironclad Festival did in fact take place, despite the dim weather forecast and result. Seven matches of vintage base ball featuring participants from six communities (three of which are in the 5 Healthy Towns coalition) were played. Live music from Brian Brill and Wesley Fritzemeier, as well as lunch fare from the Kiwanis Club trailer helped make the event enjoyable for participants & spectators.

Setbacks Were there any setback encountered during the implementation of this intervention? X Yes No If yes, please describe setbacks and how they were addressed below: Setbacks or issues identified Weather very dim forecast leading up to event, causing participants to cancel. Rain during event that likely caused lower turnout of community members than hoped for. How they were addressed The event was close to being cancelled, but we went ahead with the festival as best we could. The weather was tolerable for the beginning of the day, rain caused an early stoppage in the second half of the day. How will you improve or avoid these issues in the future? As the Ironclad Festival, and all our events, are held outdoors we are at the mercy of the weather.

Please include an itemized expense report (not budget) that demonstrates how the grant funds were used Please insert a table of your final expense report. Table should be broken into 3 section: Expenses Field reservations $190.00* Meal vouchers for participants (Kiwanis) $650.00* Live music (Brill & Fritzemeier) $150.00* Field equipment & supplies $ Programs/signage $ Revenue $1,000 (5HF) In-kind Many volunteer hours from Monitor & Merrimack club members and community supporters, setting up fields Friday evening & breaking down late Saturday. Please indicate items that were funded by 5HF with *

End of Coalition Presentation Please complete information for the entire slide deck (slides 1-18). The slide deck will be used as your intervention evaluation report for the 5 Healthy Towns Foundation. Please use your intervention table as a reference when completing the slide deck. For the Coalition meeting you will only need to present on slides 1-11* *Note: You do not need to complete slide 2 if this was the first year you implemented your intervention using 5HF funds. Slides 4-7 will also vary depending on the number of goals you had for your intervention.

Intervention Information Brief Intervention Description I. A day-long celebration of the great community pastime of vintage base ball, featuring 6-10 amateur clubs from around Michigan (including other communities in the 5 Healthy Towns coalition). Free and family-friendly local entertainment, open to the public. Live music and lunch fare options to help make the event a wellrounded experience for participants and spectators. Although the Ironclad Festival is a one-day experience, support for this intervention also aids our summer-long program of vintage baseball matches & practices here in Chelsea, which are all also free and open to anyone interested in participating. II. III. The Ironclad Festival takes place on three adjacent fields on the grounds of Chelsea High School, with lunch time events (live music & food) taking place at the tennis court pavilion area. Spectators are free to walk around and enjoy all the action, no admission charged. Community members of all ages are the targeted population. We have active (playing) participants from ages 18-72, male and female. Spectators of all ages find our pastime very rewarding.

Please include the key evaluation data collected for this intervention Primary evaluation data is estimated attendance of participants and spectators. Turnout lower than hoped for, due to poor weather. Participants numbered 100 (using # of food vouchers to keep track of total). Estimate of spectators from the community that stopped by for portions of the festival is around 50. Testimonials were not collected in writing, but lots of positive feedback received that day, despite the weather.

Collaborations Did your intervention involve collaboration with any other organizations X Yes No Please comment on the value of the collaboration The Monitors and Merries collaborated with the Kiwanis group to provide lunch for festival participants. (The lunch obligation is the largest necessary expense of an event such as this, as visiting clubs expect this when they agree to participate. Otherwise, the total expense of the festival would be considerably lower.) The Kiwanis group brought its food trailer on site and stayed the length of the event. They are a great group, very supportive of the goals of our clubs and our pastime in general, enthusiastic and engaging with community members.

Collaborations Will the collaboration continue if the intervention continues? The collaboration would certainly continue if the Ironclad were to happen again, but after three festivals of lower turnout than hoped for in great part due to unpredictable weather we are likely not to continue this intervention. At least in the manifestation of a day-long festival of this scale. Are there additional collaborators you could work with in the future? We think that any and all wellness- and community-based organizations would be excellent partners in this endeavor, as they would share the core goals of our group.

Sustainability Does your intervention have a sustainability plan? Yes X No What steps are being taken to ensure sustainability of the intervention beyond 5HF funding? The intervention, in terms of its form as a day-long festival, requires a significant amount of fundraising, considerably surpassing our annual budget for all other regular activities & events for the Monitors & Merries. Thus, its sustainability would require the assistance of partners such as the 5 Healthy Towns foundation or other community sponsors. At this point, after three Ironclad festivals, we are leaning towards suspending the festival. Although the festivals have been successful in large part, and certainly very enjoyable to the participants and spectators in attendance, we have not drawn the types of numbers of community members we feel it would take to justify continuing this amount of fundraising. We are very appreciative of all the support in putting together the three Ironclad festivals we have hosted.
