1 District 31-G News A Lion s Tale March 2015 Hello Lions: I hope everyone is ready for spring. Please send me your club s happenings and stories. Please send them to me at the following address: bsilva001@nc.rr.com. This month the newsletter will features the following: An article from District Governor, Lion Ron Beltran An Article from 2 nd Vice District Governor, Lion Barbara Beltran An article from International President, Lion Joe Preston District 31G Reminders Updates and Reminders 2015 Camp Dogwood Spring Volunteer Week Reservation Form Lions Night at the Carolina Mudcats North Carolina Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program Louisburg Lions and The Embers 92 nd Annual NC Lions State Convention

2 District Governor Lion Ron Beltran Do you have your slate of club officers ready to announce? Remember you have to read them out to your membership for 3 meetings before you vote on them and send results of your club election on a PU-101, to the DG, VDGs, District Secretary and Lions Clubs International, before April 30, You may not know it, but this year s State Convention is being dedicated to those Lions who were inducted fifty or more years ago (all 278 of them). How wonderful it would be to have as many of these long serving Lions attend this year s State Convention as possible, so we can honor them and present them with a unique 50+ year pin. We did not feel the 50 year chevron displayed their accomplishment adequately so we have commissioned a special North Carolina Lions 50 + year pin. We have only ordered 278 pins, so make sure your honored member will receive his commerative pin. Print off a few Convention Registration forms and talk with the Lions on the attached list that are in District 31-G. Invite them to attend. With our going from eight districts to five, The Council of Governors feel that this is the appropriate time to honor these individuals for their long service and dedication. Join me in inviting as many of these Lions as we can. Probably Lions International has miss-keyed some dates of birth, as I don t think we have as many 115 year old members as the report indicates but obviously Lions has recruited some stubborn I mean well bred I mean excellent genes. 4 2 nd Vice-District Governor Lion Barbara Beltran Hello again. I hope you have all thawed out from our winter weather!! Did you know? 6,017 pairs of eyeglasses were purchased through Matching Funds in a single year? 41 sighted students of visually impaired parents received Education Grants? 477,772 pairs of eyeglasses were recycled providing improved vision to thousands of individuals? Thanks to all clubs who have made contributions to Brighter Visions! Remember Brighter Visions helps people in many ways, including eyeglasses, mobile screening unit, scholarships for sighted children of visually impaired parents, Camp Dogwood, the VIP Fishing Tournament, white canes, to name a few. This year, we have a dual goal for Brighter Visions: the $95 per member Governor s goal, and a goal of 100% participation in some way, by all of our District G clubs. Matching funds are getting low, so we are encouraging clubs to pay as much as they can, as soon as they can! If you have not had a Brighter Visions program presented at one of your club meetings this Lions year, please contact Paul or me. Paul Silverman: Silverman1@prodigy.net or Barbara Beltran: rgbeltran@yahoo.com or Club Secretaries, don t forget to enter your club s acts of service on the LCI Activity Report (with International), as well as our District s report, to help us meet International President Joe Preston s Centennial Service Challenge! Hope to see all of you at our Lions State Convention April in Charlotte! (See Registration form in this newsletter.) Caring is contagious! Let us be on fire with a passion to serve!!! Yours in Service, Lion Barbara Beltran, 2nd VDG PS Starting in April, we will post the Brighter Visions District Report each month in the newsletter. Please check for your club, to make sure you have been given proper credit for all contributions, and let me know ASAP if there are mistakes, so we can get them corrected. Thanks!

5 International President Help Lions Help Others Through LCIF Joni and I are Lions, but we re parents, too. So it was very gratifying for us when we recently visited a primary school in Nairobi, Kenya, and watched as more than 300 lovely children received vision screenings. Joni and I then had the privilege of giving eyeglasses to the children that needed them. I m not sure who was smiling more the children or us. You can smile with pride, too, because the screenings were made possible by LCIF. And LCIF s remarkable service is made possible by Lions such as yourself. I almost didn t want to tell about this project in Kenya. You may get the wrong idea about LCIF. Kenya is probably not anywhere near you. You may think, Oh, yes, LCIF helps people far away from here, in undeveloped nations. I am proud that LCIF indeed helps people in dire need in impoverished places. Working through LCIF, Lions restore sight, protect people against measles, help disaster victims get back on their feet and so much more. But our Foundation also helps millions of people in developed nations. It s active perhaps in your own community or likely a community near you. As just a few examples, LCIF recently awarded $100,000 to Lions in Colorado to provide vision screening equipment to the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute, $75,000 to Lions in Ohio to equip a handicapped-accessible playground and $100,000 to Lions in Toronto, Canada, to provide equipment to a Lions eye care center. LCIF is Lions tool for serving on a larger scale than clubs can do on their own. Think of LCIF as a logical extension of the Lions model. We join a club because our service is more valuable when we unite with like-minded others. We support LCIF because our funds go a lot further when put into common pool. Through LCIF, we help each other help others. We can and do provide services that governments and other civic groups are not able to. One sure way to Strengthen the Pride is to better understand who we are and what we do. Now that s something to smile about. Lion Joe Preston International President
