2 Contact us A word from the office... If you are over 60 and live in the area shown on the map on the back cover of this newsletter you can join our mailing list for FREE. Call in or telephone with your details. Alternatively or visit our website. Telephone Visit us at Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme CIO, Station Road, Leeds LS15 7JY admin@crossgatesgns.org.uk Visit Like us at Follow Latest News Front cover photo - tweets of inspiration and top tips for living long and well from our over 90s group. Funding update - good news! We hope you find lots inside this issue to set you up for a healthy end of the year and keep those winter blues away! We have activities on offer each week where you can enjoy some company, exercise in company, create and learn in company and eat in company... You can see there is a bit of a theme here but evidence suggests that isolation is bad for your health so a little company is good for keeping well! Survey Results The results of our last survey from the back of the new membership forms showed a high degree of satisfaction with your housing, relationships and finance but 15% of you were dissatisfied with the opportunities on offer to you generally so we hope some of our new ones on page nine might fit the bill! 21% of you are dissatisfied with your health and 24% would like to make changes to their lives with help from family first, then friends and Good Neighbours in equal second place. Price increases... Adult Social Care at Leeds City Council has extended From 1 October some of our prices have gone up our contract for a further 12 months from October. following our consultation begun at the AGM. The increase Jimbo s Fund has chosen to support us again this year is to cover costs which have risen, and in anticipation of funding Charley for two days a week. some grant support ending. Most people have agreed the The South and East Clinical Commissioning Group has prices still reflect good value but if they present a problem awarded us funding for a one-year pilot project to work for you, please let us know and we will check that you are with Ashfield and Manston surgeries. receiving all of the financial support you are entitled to. 2 3

9 Lifelong Learning Volunteering Jean and David Richardson started coming to Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme in January after Jean s brother spotted an ad for ukulele lessons in our newsletter. Jean had been given a ukulele for her 70th birthday and had been looking for lessons in the area. Initially they loaned a ukulele for David and Joan brought her own along. Although David plays the piano neither of them had ever played the ukulele before. Jean said: It s fantastic, I love it. It s the fastest hour of the week. It keeps your brain going and your mood up. It s just an uplifting feeling. We enjoy practicing at home. Singing in the garden! A few weeks ago we had a gathering at our house - there were nine of us sitting outside in the garden. So what did we do? We got the ukuleles out and began to play a sample of our repertoire! They loved it - it got them singing along as well, the neighbours opened their door and were clapping. Jane Robinson recently met up with one of our volunteers, Joan Bennett to talk about her experience of volunteering with Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme. Joan started coming to the Walking Group in 2002, following the death of her partner. She had already joined Crossgates Rambling Club and her friend John Best suggested she join the Good Neighbours group too. A few years later it was suggested she move into a volunteering leader role in the group which she decided to take on. Walking was just the beginning... They re a really nice crowd that go. Each walk has two volunteers - one to lead and one as a back marker. I prefer it at the back - I m not very good at walking and reading! When the Extend Exercise Group started I offered to volunteer with that making cups of tea. I think it s good to volunteer. It fills your time in and I enjoy it. I m helping with the Lunch Club on a Wednesday with the washing up now too. Volunteering has really opened my eyes up to how many lonely elderly people there are locally who don t get about much. It s a nice friendly group that practice here. We all get on. I d definitely recommend it as an activity. You can practice at home in your own time. You don t need to read music. Anyone can do it. If you think the ukulele might be for you please get in If you d be interested in volunteering at Cross Gates touch with the office for the latest ukulele update! please speak to the office or call
