Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (January to June 2018) Public Education (1) Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) In view of the increasing need of training on common mental illness management in Hong Kong, the Public Education Subcommittee (PES) has been organising the 13.5-hour Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC) since October 2009, which is designed for health care professionals and related personnel who may come into contact with people with mental health problems or their carers in daily practice. The training has been receiving overwhelming responses throughout the years. Through comprehensive lectures, case discussions/ vignettes, and interactive workshops, participants from the Hospital Authority, government departments and non-governmental organisations are equipped with knowledge and managing skills to facilitate early detection, timely intervention and care. The 17 th and 18 th courses (MHC17 and MHC18) were conducted in the period: (i) The 17 th Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC17): A total of 127 participants attended MHC17 on 6 and 13 January (ii) The 18 th Certificate Course in Mental Health (MHC18): MHC18 was conducted on 30 June and 7 July 2018 with 129 participants. 1
4 (2) Educational Training on Mental Health of Students With the increasing emphasis on students mental health in the territory, the PES conducted educational talks for school teachers and parents upon invitation. (i) Educational talk for the Friends of Scouting Jockey Club Long Ping Service Centre for Children and Youth To enhance teachers capacity in assisting students with mental health problems, the Friends of Scouting Jockey Club Long Ping Service Centre for Children and Youth invited the PES to organise an educational talk on 26 February 2018 for 60 teaching staff of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Yao Dao Secondary School. (ii) Training course for the Education Bureau Responding to the invitation from the Education Bureau, the PES conducted a three-hour training course for about 120 primary and secondary school teachers on 20 March The course aimed to equip participants with basic knowledge of mental health, and to introduce skills in identifying and supporting students with mental health problems. (iii) Seminar for the Association for Holistic Life Education A seminar on handling child abuse and domestic violence cases was conducted for the Association for Holistic Life Education on 23 March A total of 100 school teachers and school social workers attended the seminar to learn skills in assisting young victims to overcome traumas in families. (iv) Training course for the QESOSA Tong Kwok Wah Secondary School The QESOSA Tong Kwok Wah Secondary School invited the PES to conduct a six-hour training course for its 60 teaching staff for their professional development on 28 March and 8 June The training course introduced common mental health problems and enhanced participants capacity in managing students with mental health problems, in order to provide timely intervention and care for students in school. (v) Educational talk for the Sheung Shui Wai Chow Kindergarten (Branch) The PES organised an educational talk for about 100 parents from the Sheung Shui Wai Chow Kindergarten (Branch) on 21 April 2018, with the aims of enhancing their understanding of children s psychological needs, and providing ways to develop learning motivations and resilience of their children. 2
5 (3) Lecture on Mental Disorders and Mental Health in the Community With the objective of introducing community-oriented western medicine practice to registered Chinese Medicine Practitioners, the Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine invited the PES to deliver a three-hour lecture on mental disorders and mental health on 20 May 2018, as part of its Western Medicine for Chinese Medicine Practitioners: Certificate Course on Primary Healthcare. A total of 79 registered Chinese Medicine Practitioners attended the lecture and acquired knowledge of common mental illness for them to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals in other sectors. (4) Educational Talk on Dementia In response to the training request from the Jockey Club Tuen Mun Home for the Aged Blind, an educational talk for its 23 staff was conducted on 28 June The talk aimed to provide participants with knowledge of dementia and to introduce ways to handle elderly with dementia in hostel. (5) Management of Workplace Violence (MoV) Seminars cum Workshops To equip participants with breakaway techniques and to enhance their skills in managing people who are emotional or potentially violent, the PES has been organising Management of Workplace Violence (MoV) training for various organisations upon invitation. (i) MoV training for the Open University of Hong Kong The Division of Nursing and Health Studies of the Open University of Hong Kong invited the PES to organise two seminars and six workshops for its 150 nursing students from January to March 2018, providing them with knowledge and skills in handling workplace violence in psychiatric clinical setting. (ii) MoV training for the Hong Kong Society for the Aged In response to the training request from the Hong Kong Society for the Aged, a seminar and a workshop were conducted for its 20 staff on 29 June Under instruction of qualified trainers, participants were equipped with knowledge of handling and preventing workplace violence as well as breakaway techniques. 3
6 (6) Educational Materials Publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illness and self-help guide to the general public. The information is easily accessible at the service units of CPH and on the IMH website. The PES has been continuously reviewing all educational materials and reprinting pamphlets to ensure the information is accurate and up-to-date. In view of the high demand, educational pamphlets listed below were reviewed and reprinted from January to June 2018: Obsessive-compulsive Disorder 強迫症 Stress Management in Workplace 認識工作壓力 Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder 專注力不足及過度活躍症 In order to allow patients, carers and the general public to acquire mental health information using mobile devices more easily, the PES produced a leaflet with QR codes for accessing online educational pamphlets of IMH. The leaflet has been displayed in CPH clinics and distributing to participants during IMH activities. 4
7 (7) Health Column in Sing Tao Daily To disseminate mental health information to the public, the PES continues to collaborate with the Sing Tao Daily in publishing articles under the health column 保健至專 inside the feature page of the newspaper. Published articles written by CPH colleagues are shared with all CPH staff via . The collection of articles has also been uploaded to the IMH website for public access. 8 (8) Health Column in Apple Daily The PES has been collaborating with the Apple Daily in publishing articles written by CPH colleagues since October The column serves as an effective medium for mental health education. The articles are published under the health column 心藏筆露 inside the feature page of the newspaper every other Tuesday. CPH colleagues have been contributing to this project by actively submitting their articles. Published articles are shared with all CPH staff via . The collection of articles has also been uploaded to the IMH website for public access. 9 Professional Training (1) Cultivating Self-esteem: A Transdiagnostic Cognitive-behavioural Perspective Two-day Workshop A two-day workshop on Cultivating Self-esteem: A Transdiagnostic Cognitive-behavioural Perspective organised by the Professional Training Subcommittee (PTS) on 2 and 3 February 2018 was a great success. Over 120 health care professionals participated in the workshop delivered by Dr. Melanie FENNELL, a world-renowned Clinical Psychologist and Associate Trainer of Oxford Mindfulness Centre in the United Kingdom. Through experiential learning and experience sharing, participants gained a deeper understanding on the development of low self-esteem, and learnt techniques to help clients with low self-esteem from a cognitive-behavioural perspective. 7
10 Research (1) Research Skills Training Workshops The Research Subcommittee (RS) has been organising research skills training workshops, which comprise a series of interactive small-group workshops conducted by experienced researchers. The series of workshops repeats once every year, and is open to all CPH staff. Family Medicine trainees of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) were also invited to attend the workshops. The workshops aimed at promoting a culture of research and enhancing research skills among our staff. Three workshops of the series were held in May and June 2018, and a total of 13 CPH and TMH staff participated in the workshops. (i) Defining research questions and preparing research protocols and basic statistics A workshop on research methodology and the concept of research paradigms and common pitfalls in research design was delivered by Dr. Simon LUI on 23 May (ii) Critical appraisal of research papers Dr. William CHUI conducted a workshop on critical appraisal of research papers on 30 May (iii) Use of reference management software in writing scientific papers Dr. Eric LAI demonstrated techniques in using Endnote, a citation management software in the workshop on 13 June
11 (2) Research Seminars As part of the regular in-house training programme for medical staff, the RS conducted two research seminars in the period, with a total attendance of 63 medical staff. They include: The effectiveness of social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) on functional recovery among persons with first episode psychosis (FEP): a randomised controlled trial presented by Ms. Panmi LO on 31 January 2018 Clustering of schizotypal features in unaffected relatives of schizophrenia patients presented by Dr. Simon LUI on 2 May 2018 (3) Research Studies As of June 2018, CPH has more than 20 on-going research projects. The IMH is actively involved in the following research projects: A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis Write-up stage. Phenotype and endophenotype data of 206 patients with first-episode psychosis, 99 healthy controls and genotype data of 351 patients have been collected. The RS joined the Asia Screening Array Consortium, and genotyping is in progress and is expected to be completed in 3Q Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia: Cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales An article titled Clustering of schizotypy features in unaffected first-degree relatives of schizophrenia patients was published in Schizophrenia Bulletin (impact factor 7.757). Searching for intermediate phenotypes for psychosis: A functional MRI study on neuroanatomical markers for psychosis and gene-brain mapping Write-up stage. A total of 85 patients with first-episode psychosis, 29 first-degree relatives and 61 healthy controls have been recruited for neurological tests. A manuscript titled Tractography-based classification in distinguishing patients with first-episode schizophrenia from healthy individuals was published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry (impact factor 4.187). 9
12 Patient and Carer Resource (1) Patient Resource The Patient and Carer Resource Subcommittee (PCRS) conducted an educational talk on schizophrenia 精神分裂知多少 at the Tuen Mun Mental Health Day Centre (Mindset) on 23 January The talk was delivered by Dr. Jeremy LI with 21 attendances, including out-patients, day-patients, relatives and members of the public. (2) Self-help and Advocacy Six day-patients joined the three gatherings organised by the artwork framing group 書畫樂聚之裱畫小組 held on 9 February, 12 April and 20 June The activities aimed to empower patients through mounting artworks. 10
13 (3) Community Partnership The PCRS has been collaborating with the Jardine Matheson Group in organising community partnership activities under the Health-in-Mind Youth Mental Health Promotion Programme. The Tuen Mun Carmel Tang Bin Nam Memorial Secondary School and the Day Hospital jointly organised two activities, namely 樂聚新年 and 相約綠田園, on 1 February and 3 May 2018 respectively. A total of 18 day-patients joined the activities. (4) Volunteer Service (i) Volunteer sharing forum Volunteer Sharing Forum 2017 was held on 31 January A Total of 70 volunteers participated in the forum. (ii) Core training for volunteers Two core training sessions for volunteers were held on 11 January and 26 April 2018 with a total of 48 participants. (iii) Lunar New Year celebration programme The PCRS and the Red Cross jointly organised the annual programme 紅情共聚賀新春 to celebrate the Lunar New Year with 265 patients through ward visit on 3 March
14 Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition (1) MTR Community Art Galleries Exhibition The Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition Subcommittee (HAGES) has been arranging exhibitions of patients artworks in the MTR Community Art Galleries. The project aimed at boosting confidence of patients in recovery by exploring their talents through painting, as well as enhancing public awareness of mental health. Two exhibitions were held in Siu Hong Station and Kam Sheung Road Station in January and June 2018 respectively to show patients artistic talents to the public. Exhibition of artworks in Siu Hong Station (left) and Kam Sheung Road Station (right) (2) Art Exhibition at HA Convention To promote social inclusion through showcasing the artistic talents of psychiatric patients to fellow healthcare professionals, patients artworks were displayed at the HA Convention on 7 and 8 May
15 (3) Art Jamming Art jamming has become popular in recent years, allowing participants to experience and enjoy painting together. In view of this, the HAGES organised an art jam session in the Severe Intellectual Disability Activity Centre of Excellency (SIDACE) on 16 March Patients and staff participated in the event were encouraged to unleash their creativity and to express and relax themselves through freestyle painting. Artworks created by patients and staff 13
16 Mental Health Experience Museum Project CPH has been actively devoting itself to the Mental Health Experience Museum project, which is selected and funded by the HSBC 150 th Anniversary Charity Programme. With the aim to promote mental well-being and to reduce stigma associated with mental illness in Hong Kong, the museum will incorporate evidence-based strategies of experiential learning and face-to-face contact with peer specialists to change people s attribution to mental illness. (1) Project Promotion To introduce the purpose of establishing the Mental Health Experience Museum, a media briefing was held on 23 March 2018 by Dr. Bonnie SIU and Ms. Jolene MUI. Reporters present were supportive of the project. Feature articles on the Mental Health Experience Museum were published in several local newspapers, including Apple Daily, Ming Pao, Oriental Daily, Metro Daily, SCMP, Sing Pao, Ta Kung Pao, Sing Tao Daily and HK01, on 3 April Project Director Dr. Bonnie SIU (right), and Project Coordinator Ms. Jolene MUI (left) presented the project at the media briefing on 23 March
17 Newspaper articles published by Oriental Daily (left) and Ming Pao (right) on 3 April 2018 Media interviews in radio programmes were arranged after the media briefing held on 23 March Dr. Bonnie SIU was invited to introduce the project in live radio programmes 在晴朗的一天出發 of Commercial Radio on 16 April 2018 and 精靈一點 of RTHK on 25 May Furthermore, both Dr. Bonnie SIU and Ms. Jolene MUI were invited to 原來生活好快樂 of Metro Radio on 20 April 2018 to promote the project and elaborate on the project objectives. (2) Commencement of Construction Works Tenders for supply and installation of fit out works and AV equipment, video & programming from potential sub-contractors were evaluated and approved by the Main Tender Board on 26 April The awarded sub-contractors had been working with the project consultant and project team to carry out fabrication and production works. The production works had been commenced as scheduled since May Demolition works were completed. Installation of air conditioning system, electrical works and wall construction works are in progress. The overall completion rate of construction works is around 60%. The construction works by HA term contractor would be completed by the end of July
18 II. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations Received) A summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH from January to June 2018 is presented in Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types. The first type refers to activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and another type includes invitations from other organisations for conducting talks or training courses. A total of 39 activities were conducted, among which 25 were organised by the IMH. A total projected net income of $800,900 was earned from the activities with 2,220 overall attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical locations of the participants can be found in Appendix I. Activities Organised by the IMH Activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period covered various topics, including General Adult Psychiatry and research skills. The activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and the public. A projected net income of $642,758 was generated from the activities. Invitations from Other Organisations Among the 14 invitations received from external organisations, including government departments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and educational institutions, most requested for delivering training courses targeted at professional carers and the public. The projected net income was $158,142. Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products Five applications from NGOs/ educational institutions for borrowing our educational exhibition boards/ obtaining pamphlets or quoting/ copying our publications, and linking up the IMH website were received and approved. 16
