3 SUMMARY General objectives HASIC aims to empower older people in Europe to adopt healthy lifestyles which include a healthy diet, physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption and social participation. Together with supporting older people on an individual level, HASIC aims to develop the quality and cost-effectiveness of services of older people by underlining peer-support, by promoting cooperation of regional service providers and by producing policy recommendations. Specific objectives are: 1) To develop and pilot HASIC education and handbook for professionals and volunteers to support older people s healthy lifestyles. 2) To develop and pilot health and well-being promoting peer group activities and mentoring for 65+ target group. 3) To develop and pilot the online platform, through which older people will get virtual support for obtaining or maintaining healthy lifestyle. 4) To promote regional cooperation between services providers in order to enhance the quality and costeffectiveness of the services. Strategic relevance and contribution to the public health programme Current EU strategies and programs emphasize health promotion, active ageing and citizens right to preventative health care. While these aims are widely recognized, there is still a lack of knowledge and skills how to efficiently prevent health problems and exclusion of older people. HASIC answers to this challenge by developing new tools targeted especially to older people to support their healthy lifestyles and active citizenship. The tools HASIC offers include education for professionals and peer group mentors, peer group activities, specially built online platform for the 65+ target group as well as development of regional senior services. Since modern technology might be unfamiliar and inaccessible to certain older people strata, special attention will be given to equal opportunities and alternative services. In order to avoid overlapping and to gain synergies, cooperation with other EU funded projects will be executed. IROHLA has already been contacted. Methods and means In HASIC education, professionals and voluntary mentors reflect their knowledge and skills on how to recognize risks and how to support the empowerment and healthy lifestyles of older people. The final content and methods of education will be published Page 3/8

4 as a HASIC handbook. Peer group activities will be organized for older people and the peer groups will be led by voluntary 65+ mentors. In peer groups lifestyle related experiences will be shared, health risks will be discussed and peers will be encouraged. Online platform will support the process of empowerment and behavior change towards a healthier lifestyle by the means of modern technology. Platform will be developed together with professionals and older people in order to guarantee best possible usability and accessibility. In order to enhance older people s services by promoting collaboration of service providers and elderly on regional level, communal workshops will be organized in each country during the project. Expected outcomes period The main outcome of HASIC will be increased empowerment, self-management and adoption of healthier lifestyles among older people in Europe. The project promotes knowledge, skills and tools for older people to adopt and maintain healthy diet, physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption and social participation. In consequence of adopting healthy lifestyles the quality of life of will improve. In the long run targeting resources to preventive work will restrict the growth of the social and health care costs by reducing the need of expensive services and supporting later retirement. In addition several concrete tools will be developed for the preventative work in future. HASIC handbook will guide professionals how to use voluntary mentors and peer groups efficiently in older people s health promotion. Online platform will help older people to maintain healthier lifestyle even after the project. Policy recommendations produced in HASIC will direct regional services for the elderly. Page 4/8
