While many of our classes and activities are tailored for young families, we also offer healthy living classes to help people stop smoking, get fit, and learn more about the latest health topics. 5 CLASSES FOR NEW, EXPECTANT FAMILIES The upcoming birth of a baby is an exciting time for a family, but it s also a time of change. That s why Methodist Medical Center offers a variety of classes to prepare you for this new addition, but in case you still have questions or want to learn about other resources for new mothers, please call our Family Education Coordinator at (865) VIP (Very Important Pregnancy) Tour If you are pregnant, Methodist invites you to a VIP Tour of our Family Birthing Center. The visit is valuable for women during all phases of pregnancy, but we encourage you to schedule your visit when you are weeks along in your pregnancy. You will meet with a registered nurse from the Family Birthing Center to get answers to your questions, learn more about our Family Education Program, discuss pediatric care, and take a personalized tour of the Family Birthing Center. You may make an appointment through your doctor s office or call (865) or Pre-Admission Visit A pre-admission visit is required if you plan to give birth at Methodist Medical Center. We suggest that you schedule the visit when you are weeks along in your pregnancy. You will meet with a nurse in our Family Birthing Center to complete the paperwork needed for admission to the hospital when you go into labor. Paternity and other issues will be discussed during the pre-admission visit, and we also will answer your questions. To schedule this important visit, please call (865) or Great Expectations Childbirth Class This 3-part childbirth class series takes expectant mothers and their families through topics related to childbirth, delivery and newborn care. The first class covers pregnancy, relaxation, and the process of delivery; the second class focuses on pain management, active labor and delivery, and support for the mom; and the last class includes information about c-sections, postpartum issues, and the characteristics of newborns. The course fee is $35. Financial help with the cost is available if delivering at Methodist. This class is free to active military families. This 3-part class is offered monthly from 6 9 p.m. and meets in the Cheyenne Ambulatory Center Conference Room. For more information or to register, please call (865) or Great Expectations Class Series: January 7, 14, 21 February 4, 11, 18 April 1, 8, 15 June 3, 10, 17 July 1, 8, 15 September 9, 16, 23 October 7, 14, 21 November 4, 11, 18 December 2, 9, 16 Let s Talk Labor This program is a single Great Expectations class which focuses solely on comfort measures and techniques for labor management. 6 Breastfeeding Daytime Class Even a little information can help you make the right decision about breastfeeding for you and your baby. It also can help you succeed if you choose to breastfeed. If you can t attend the breastfeeding evening class, Methodist recommends this 2-hour daytime breastfeeding class, which meets from noon - 2 p.m. The class is held in the Family Birthing Center, located on the second floor of the hospital. The fee is $10 and financial help with the cost is available if delivering at Methodist. This class is free to active military families. Call (865) for more information or to register Breastfeeding Daytime Classes: January 8 May 7 February 5 June 4 March 5 July 2 April 2 August 6 September 10 October 1 November 5 Breastfeeding Evening Class If you are thinking about breastfeeding, some information may help you succeed. New or expectant moms discuss the benefits of breastfeeding for themselves and their babies, and learn effective techniques in this 2-hour class. The class is limited to 10 participants. Handouts are provided and other suggested materials are reviewed. The fee is $10, and financial help with the cost is available if delivering at Methodist. This class is free to active military families. This class is held from 6 8 p.m. in the West Ridge Conference Room. For more information or to register, please call (865) or Breastfeeding Evening Classes: January 28 May 20 February 25 June 24 March 27 July 22 April 22 August 19 September 30 October 28 November 12 December 3 class for new parents and grandparents to learn up-to-date baby care techniques and safety. A lot has changed since your parents raised you, so while new moms learn about postpartum depression, safe sleep strategies for baby, the importance of breast milk, what s normal and what s not, and how to understand a newborn s needs, grandparents will get a refresher in modern baby care and will learn ways they can best support a new mom. This class meets from 10:30 a.m. noon in the West Ridge Conference Room. The fee is $10 and financial help with the cost is available if delivering at Methodist. This class is free to active military families. To register or for more information, call (865) Bringing Up Baby Classes: January 19 April 6 July 27 October 5 Big Brothers & Big Sisters: The Sibling Experience The Big Brothers and Big Sisters class is for 3- to 12-year-old boys and girls in expectant families. The children have hands-on fun while learning about and preparing for the upcoming birth of a baby in their family. The fee is $10, and help with the cost is available. The program is a 1-time event for each family, and can be scheduled by calling (865) or Infant CPR Learn life-saving CPR techniques developed specifically for babies by the American Hospital Association. This Saturday class takes place from 9-10 a.m. in the West Ridge Conference Room. It s open to new parents, grandparents, and other caregivers of newborns. Handouts are provided at no charge. The class fee is $10 per family group, and financial help with the cost is available if delivering at Methodist. This class is free to active military families. Instructors are Cheryl Stallings, RN, and members of the Family Birthing Center staff. Childbirth classes prepare you for the delivery of your child, but what do you do when you go home? Join Methodist Medical Center for Bringing Up Baby, a 2019 Infant CPR Classes: January 19 April 6 July 27 October 5

7 Mommy2Mommy Lunches and Special Programs Mommy2Mommy activities give new mothers opportunities to get together in a relaxed setting where they can make friends and share their joys and concerns. Mommy2Mommy lunches typically take place on the 4th Friday of each month at noon in the Cheyenne Ambulatory Center Conference Room, located at 944 Oak Ridge Turnpike. A light lunch is served at no charge, and children are welcome. Here, new moms can discuss the birth experience, learn more about enjoying life after pregnancy and taking care of a newborn as well as themselves. 9 EXERCISE CLASSES FOR ANY ABILITY Mommy & Co. Exercise Methodist invites mothers to bring their babies and young children to this action-packed exercise class. Classes meet on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. in the Kern United Methodist Church s Family Life Center, 451 E. Tennessee Ave., Oak Ridge. The class is offered free of charge. Please call (865) or to register. BODYWORKS BodyWorks, a community exercise program sponsored by Covenant Health, is designed to give adults safe and effective workouts. Classes cost $3 per class and you pay as you go. For details or information about other class locations, go online to: or call (865) The following Bodyworks Class is offered in Anderson County. CardioMix Get a great workout! You will burn calories, increase your stamina, and tone those muscles while taking it easy on the joints. We use a variety of styles to keep CardioMix interesting. We push you moderately hard, but we don t jump or run. Bring a mat because we go to the floor for great core work. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Clinton, 225 N. Main St., Clinton. Classes are subject to change. 11 SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SOME OF LIFE S CHALLENGES Smoking Cessation When you stop smoking, your body begins to enjoy the benefits almost immediately, and those benefits can last a lifetime. Methodist s cardiopulmonary rehab program offers Freedom from Smoking, a six-class series, four times each year. Class participants work with an instructor from Methodist to identify people, places and things that trigger their urge to light up; create a stop smoking plan that fits their individual needs; and receive support to help avoid a relapse. The American Lung Association developed Freedom from Smoking classes. The fee of $50 per person is refundable upon completion of all 6 classes. Registration is required. This class series will meet from 5 6 p.m. in Methodist s Cardiopulmonary Rehab Classroom, Suite 360, Westmall Medical Park, 200 New York Ave., Oak Ridge. To register, please call (865) or Smoking Cessation Class Series: Winter Session: Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12 Spring Session: May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4, 11 Summer Session: Aug. 6, 13, 20, 27, Sept. 3, 10 Fall Session: Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5 Stroke Support Group People who have had a stroke or are caring for a stroke patient may benefit from this support group, which meets the last Tuesday of each month from 4-5 p.m. in the Cheyenne Ambulatory Center Conference Room (except July, November and December, when special holiday dates are scheduled). This is a free support group sponsored by Methodist Therapy Services. For more information about the Stroke Support Group, call Janie at (865) or Faye at (865) Grief Support Group Covenant Hospice offers ongoing monthly grief support groups. The Oak Ridge group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. in the Legacy Room of Methodist Medical Center. The group offers a safe environment where those who have experienced the death of a loved one can find comfort, support and hope. The groups are informal. You may attend meetings as you wish, for as long as you want. The grief support group meetings are open to the community and are free of charge, but registration is required. Mended Hearts Support Group Mended Hearts is a national and community-based nonprofit organization that offers the gift of hope to heart disease patients, their families and caregivers. These support groups help people understand that there can be a rich, rewarding life after heart disease diagnosis. Mended Hearts volunteers offer peer-to-peer support to patients, family members and caregivers. The Mended Hearts Support Group meets on the third Thursday of each month in the Cheyenne Conference Room. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. during daylight savings time; during winter/standard time, meetings are held at noon. 12 SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SOME OF LIFE S CHALLENGES Cancer Support When fighting cancer, you are never alone. Methodist Medical Center s Cancer Resource Center along with the Cancer Support Community, have partnered together to bring a series of day and evening classes to support cancer patients and caregivers. RSVP by calling (865) or by visiting Cancer Resource Center Lunch and Learn Support Series These free programs will include a light lunch, informative presentation, opportunity for questions and answers, and social time for attendees to meet other cancer patients and their support people. All programs will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Methodist Medical Center s Manhattan Room located at 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Easy access from top level of parking deck to 2nd floor entrance. March 7: Managing Loss of Appetite What do I do if I don t feel like eating? Join members of our nursing and nutrition staff as they offer tips for managing loss of appetite and getting the basic nutrition needed to help tolerate treatment and fight cancer. Lots of samples will be available for tasting. May 2: Someone I Know Has Cancer. What Do I Do? Most people know someone who has cancer, and many are unsure how to help, what to say (or not to say), and, in general, what to do. Join nursing staff and CSC s psychologist, Denise Stillman, Ph.D., as they discuss some do s and don ts in supporting someone with cancer. September 5: Sleep Matters Having trouble falling or staying asleep? For those impacted by cancer, the effects of treatment and medications, along with the stress of cancer, may keep you and your loved ones from getting a good night s rest. CSC s psychologist, Denise Stillman, Ph.D., will discuss why sleep matters and what steps you can take to improve the quality of your zzz s Cancer Resource Center Evening Program Schedule The classes meet from 5:00-7:30 p.m. in the Cancer Resource Center, 2nd Floor of the Thompson Cancer Survival Center building, 102 Vermont Avenue, Oak Ridge. A light dinner will be served with presentations to follow. Please RSVP to (865) February 7: Managing Cancer-Related Pain Cancer or its treatment can cause pain. Our interdisciplinary panel made up of a physical therapist and psychologist will help you to understand your pain cycle and then learn practical tools to manage your pain and improve your quality of life. April 4: Calmer Body, Calmer Mind: Relaxation Strategies Denise Stillman, PhD, behavioral psychologist, will talk to you about your body s response to stress and teach relaxation exercises to calm your body and mind. 10

13 SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SOME OF LIFE S CHALLENGES June 6: Cancer Related Fatigue Fatigue is one of the most common and frustrating symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. Our interdisciplinary panel made up of a nurse, physical therapist, and psychologist will explain cancer-related fatigue and strategies for managing it. August 1: How am I Supposed to Feel? Debra Sullivan, PhD, psychologist at CSC, talks about the signs of depression and anxiety. She will help you understand the emotional roller coaster that comes with cancer, and help you find ways to maintain emotional balance and even cultivate joy during this challenging time. October 3: Finding and Writing the Stories of Your Life By looking at the big story of our life, we often miss the little stories that make up a year, a month, a day, or even an hour. CSC s creative and inspiring writing instructor, Donna Doyle, will help you uncover and find ways to tell those precious stories. No writing experience necessary! December 5: Nutrition Ammunition Healthy food choices can be difficult, especially during the holidays. Our Registered Dietician will offer 10 tips for maximizing nutrition during and after cancer -- all while enjoying a tasty and healthful sampling menu. 11

15 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH Safe Sitters This nationally recognized, 6½-hour class equips teens for the role of babysitter. Methodist recommends it for 11- to 13-yearolds who want to learn safe babysitting techniques and how to handle emergencies when caring for children. This class is offered at the Children s Museum of Oak Ridge. Instructors are members of Methodist Medical Center s staff. Participants will learn how to perform CPR on infants and toddlers, calm fussy or upset children, change diapers, learn games and crafts, and other skills they can use when they babysit. This program is held during the summer. For class date, time and cost or to register, please contact the Children s Museum at (865) Health Night on the Town Methodist Medical Center sponsors health information programs for the community on the last Tuesday of each month, except in June, July, August, November and December. We meet in the hospital s Ridge Conference Room from 7-8 p.m. Speakers are physicians and other health care professionals associated with Methodist. Health Night on the Town programs are free of charge and open to the public. (Program dates are subject to change during holiday months). For more information, call (865) Baby s Best Fest Breast milk is made especially for babies, and at Methodist, we want to encourage all new mothers to consider breastfeeding for your baby s best health and development. To educate families and the community on the importance of breastfeeding, Methodist Medical Center hosts Baby s Best Fest each August in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Month. Baby s Best Fest is a free event where moms can learn more about the importance of breastfeeding, find resources and support, and network with other young families.the event includes a family ice cream social and children s activities. Baby s Best Fest will take place in August at the Cedar Hill Playground, located at 605 Michigan Avenue, Oak Ridge. The exact date and additional details will be available closer to August.
