1 1 DISTRICT 22-D BULLETIN Issue 6 December 2017 Moving Forward to Score DG Charlie s Message Dear Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leo's: We now have finished visiting clubs at the end of November. After that, we had Thanksgiving and an opportunity to enjoy visiting our families. We Lions have a great success in all our adventures. The Governor s Ball was held in the Gold room at the Harrington Raceway and Casino on December 2, What a great time we had! Thank you to Lion Jack and PCS Janet Bauer for setting up a fantastic evening. Thanks to Susan Griffith, B.J. Ryder, Janet Brown, Doris Mock and Ann Reiver for the ads and the book. The first Visually Impaired Party (VIP) in December was held at the Laurel Fire Company on December 5, There was a tremendous turnout with good food; we had a wonderful time. The second VIP was held on December 7, 2017 at The Harrington Moose Lodge. The Camden/Wyoming Lion s Club put on a splendid event with great participation and always great food. Both VIPs had a great crowd of Leo s from Indian River, Caesar Rodney and Milford schools. Thank you for your help. The third VIP was held on December 9, 2017 at Wilmington University with the snow coming down. It was a grand old time there as well! On Saturday, December 9, 2017, a group of Lions met at the New Teen Challenge location. This location in the Bridgeville area will be for ladies and children under six years of age to stay and get relief from their addiction. What a great program this is with lots of assistance from pastors, business men and lots of volunteers. This will be a Zone project for Region III (Zone 2). We may be able to make this a District project. It has to do with the Red Ribbon program which pertains to opioids or any other drug. On January 13, 2018, we will be having a Melvin Jones breakfast at the Modern Maturity Center. We will be celebrating the founder of the Lions. Hope to see you in attendance. The best part of the year is now upon us! The celebration of Christmas will hopefully allow us all to enjoy spending time with our families and making joyful noise and memories. Let all Lions roar to say how lucky we are and thankful for what we have to celebrate. 2 2 MOVING FORW ARD TO SCORE First Vice District Governor Having the Courage What a grand way to start of the holiday season but with a Governor s Ball. District Governor Charlie and his committee did a wonderful job in putting together one of the best balls I have been to this year. To see almost 200 Lons there that night to share with DG Charlie is just so wonderful. It shows that we have great support for the district and for our own governor. ID Bruce Beck s message was most notable in the way he spoke about the Lions of today and the Lions of tomorrow. He was able to let all Lions know that our district is on target to be a great district once again this year. But we all know this district is not the great district it is by just sitting around. The Lions of 22D are always hard working Lions and always looking for the best within their own communities and their district. My hat is off to each and every one of you for your hard work and efforts you put into each and every project you do. Rejoice, rejoice. Let us all rejoice and be thankful for what the Lions do for others. Such as the three wonderful visually impaired parties that District Governor Charlie and I just attended. Each and every one of them is special in their own way. But it is all for the same cause and that is to give a little happiness to each person that is able to attend these parties. It truly warms my heart to see what we as Lions can do for others. These four events always get me in such a great holiday spirit, as well as giving me comfort and joy. So may we all have a blessed holiday season. 1VDG John Burris

30 NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT Delmarva Lions Clubs visit the Teen Challenge Women s Center in Bridgeville Submitted by: Lion Paul Bolton Everyone knows that the Lion s are a nonprofit service organization with 1.4 million members worldwide. We serve the community in many ways such as eye exams, provide eye glasses, build ramp for handicaps persons, provided hospital equipment for free, environmental projects, funds for youth groups and literacy for adults. Today the Lions are interested in servicing the community with their attention now directed to helping stop Delaware s opioid epidemic. Recently, several members of the various Lions clubs visited the Teen Challenge Long Term Care Center located in Bridgeville, Delaware. This facility will be the first of its kind to help with long term care for Delaware Women who have drug and alcohol issues. This complex will able to house 40 Delaware women and their children ages 6 years and under. Teen Challenge began in New York in 1958 and they now have over 300 centers across the United States. Delmarva Teen Challenge opened its doors in The one-year residential program provides spiritual care for men and women with alcohol, drug and other life controlling issues. The Lions District 22-D Governor Charles Taylor, 1 st Vice President John Burris and other members of the area Lions Clubs toured the facility. Bob Carey Director of Teen Challenge gave an inspiration orientation. When asked what the Lions of Delaware can do to help, Bob informed us that they have a $100,000 matching grant given to them by a local group which will help to complete the renovations. Donations are needed to match the grant and Teen Challenge is a 501c3 organization. There is work that needs to be finished and grounds to take care of and we can provide volunteers. In their budgets Lions Clubs can direct funds to help fund Teen Challenge. Lions can help to raise awareness of the opioid crisis and work with the local schools to include becoming a mentor to a young person in need. Our Lion members and clubs can affiliate themselves with other organizations both state and private that are doing work to help change the spiraling use of opioids in Delaware. For more information on Teen Challenge look at their website at delmarvateenchallenge.org or call their office in Seaford at Where Hope Lives & Freedom is Found. 30
