Call to order Action At 4:34 pm 2. Approval of agenda Agenda of September 10th, 2018 Moved by J. Davies-Davis Carried 3. Approval of minutes Minutes of August 13th, 2018 Moved by P. Reeves Carried 4. City Council update 1) Council updates i. Both housing reports have been postponed: Inclusion Housing in Calgary and Home for Life. The new date is set for October 16, 2018 to the Urban Planning Committee. ii. Public budget deliberations will be held on November 15th. Provide any comments on the survey. iii. FYI: An information report is one that Administration identifies next steps, but there is no report back to Council. 5. Event Champion Updates 1) City Council Luncheon 1

2 i. Booked for Thursday September 20th, 2018 in the Heritage Room, City Hall. ii. The structure of the event will be similar to last year. P. Reeves will speak to 2018 NAAW highlights. iii. There will be a fun and engaging game to play. J. Pisesky will be the host. iv. Z. Weeks will provide greetings and closing comments. v. Administration to share questions ahead of time so AAC members know what some of the topics are to chat about. vi. Will provide printed copies of the housing report for City Council to take away. 2) NAAW 2019 i. Skills lab report to be sent out to all attendees to see if they would like to be involved in next steps (Working through suggested prototypes). ii. There is a meeting set up on September 26 to discuss the report with City staff and to see if we can collaborate. iii. Administration to send out a doodle poll for the next NAAW meeting. 3) Mayor s Awards 2019 i. AAC members are encouraged to reach out to two businesses in each Mayor s Awards category to talk about possible nominations. ii. We accept nominations year round. Review categories at the October 15 AAC general meeting. 6. Old Business 1) YEG Dignity Day i. C. Minchau reached out to City of Calgary contact. No response. C. Minchau to send to H. Crowe to follow up. 7. New Business 2) Home for Life Report i. Both housing reports have been postponed: Inclusion Housing in Calgary and Home for Life. New date set for October 16, ii. S. Thompson to register to speak. 8. Sub-Committee updates 1) Community Engagement i. S.U.R.F. presentation during our next meeting from Recreation Facilities. ii. Many of the issues brought forward have not been as present in the media lately. 2) Policy 2

3 i. Reviewed Policies C463/C466 and provided feedback for larger committee to take back and review. ii. Policy members researched different areas across Canada for accessible taxis. iii. Had a presentation from City Clerk s office on recruitment for City of Edmonton committees. They are looking to review their recruitment process to make it more accessible. iv. Created a new pilot sub-committee that each member will sit on for a four month term. Each meeting is open for all members to attend if there is something that interests them. 9. Administrative/Executive update 1) DATS Council Inquiry i. Report postponed until October 15, ii. The AAC recognizes the a tie-in to the accessible taxi issue and will register to speak to the report. Z. Weeks/C. Minchau and C. Ryan will speak to the report. C. Ryan had contacted the AAC prior to this report about his concerns with DATS. iii. H. Crowe reached out to P. Schmold to see the report ahead of presentation to Council. 2) Rick Hansen Foundation Certification i. British Columbia received a provincial grant to start work on training accreditors to go out and perform audits of buildings from the Rick Hansen Foundation. ii. Different staff are looking into possibilities to bring the accreditation program to Edmonton, however, there is no provincial funding. iii. A City of Edmonton Architect is currently reviewing the Rick Hansen guidelines and comparing them to the Access Design guide to see how they compare. H. Crowe to meet City staff this week. 3) Garden Suites update - Oct 30 No Update. 4) Policy C463/C466 updates i. Reviewed Policies C463/C466 and provided feedback for larger committee to take back and review. 5) Deaf Alberta Expo i. Request was sent in for an AAC member to sit at a booth. 6) Budget (video) i. The AAC has projected funds that have not been budgeted. ii. Executive committee suggested using the funds to develop another video. All possible suggestions: AAC members to respond to C. Lamoureux by Wednesday September 12 if they are able to sit at the booth. AAC members to send suggestions on how to spend the money by the 3

4 a. Update SpiderMable video b. Assistance Dogs video c. Down payment for Mayor s Awards vignettes d. Increase Social media profile October 15 AAC meeting. H. Crowe to follow up with Spidermable video director. 7) CSL students i. P. Reeves and H. Crowe have been working behind the scenes at getting some community service learning students from the University of Alberta to do a practicum with the AAC. ii. We were successful in our application, we would have two to four undergraduate students to join us over this semester for up to 30 hours. iii. The project the AAC carved out is an accessibility guideline and checklist for city events and festivals. iv. Students will be invited to join our October meeting. 8) Year End Event i. A Paint Nite was suggested. ii. AAC to determine if they would like to have a meeting in December or if the year end event will be held on a different evening. 10.Other Committee Work 1) AAC Consultations i. Policy Review committee proposed to introduce a third sub-committee to review incoming requests to the AAC. ii. Anyone is welcome to participate if they are interested in a specific topic. Agenda s will be sent to all AAC members. iii. If needed, these will be preset meetings for a four month term. Each member will participate and there will be a member from Executive during each term. Proposed groups: a. September to December J. Pisesky, E. Jackson, T. LaRiviere, J. Ferguson and M. Orbell. b. January to April Z. Weeks, S. Thompson, C. Jones, E. Lavallee and A. Jaffer. c. May to August C. Minchau, J. Davies-Davis, R. Mazumder, P. Reeves and V. Van. 11.AAC Calendar 1) Upcoming event/tasks to do i. September 20 - AAC City Council Luncheon ii. September 26 - Executive to meet with the Premier s Council 12.AAC Round Table/Social Media 1) Z. Weeks met with Councillor Knack on a blog that he is doing for all the committees that he sits on. He reached out to all the chairs C. Lamoureux to send out a private doodle poll with suggestions on what to do for the year end event. First intake meeting is September 13, 2018 at 4:30 pm. 4

5 of each committee to put together a short interview of what we do and how we do it. 2) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Rally on September 22 at 1:00 pm at the Alberta Legislature. 3) Occupational Therapy Universal Design Group meeting on September 26th at 5:00 pm in Corbett Hall at the University of Alberta. R. Lipka will be attending. 4) Pow Wow on September at the Expo Centre. 5) At the AGM of the Assembly of First Nations for all the Chiefs of Canada - a resolution was passed to support the motion to affirm two spirited people across Canada. 13.Next Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting will be held on October 15th, 2018 beginning at 4:30 pm at City Hall, Heritage Room. 14.Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 6:20 pm. 5
