Annual Report 2010 Supporting people to lead independent lives

Chief Executive s Summary This was another great year for Southside: 265 staff and 70 volunteers carefully applied the 10.6 million provided by our various funders to support 1300 people to lead more independent lives. At a time of considerable external turbulence and change we have remained focused on what is important, investing our resources in making a real difference to people s lives. Spending time with people, understanding what they need and want in life and planning together is at the heart of our work and I was especially pleased that in our customer satisfaction survey this year 91% said that Southside staff were good listeners. I am proud of our staff, volunteers and service managers who ensure that our customers needs are paramount and who work hard to ensure they go the extra mile each time. As the stories in our annual report this year show, many of our customers made significant steps towards their goals and aspirations. We were privileged to be right there with them sharing, encouraging and supporting as they took the steps towards greater independence. Aisling Duffy Chief Executive Southside Partnership

Last year, at Southside Partnership, we supported 1300 people mainly aged between 18 and 65 with mental health issues and learning disabilities, to achieve more fulfilling and independent lives. We support our customers to achieve real choice and richer and fuller lives through increased personal, social, leisure, learning, work and community involvement. Over the last year, we have witnessed many personal growth and development successes and some of these are recorded in this report. 02 Southside Partnership Annual Report 2010

I just want to enjoy my freedom... Ben * was very shy and not very vocal. He has been supported by the Southside Travel Buddy service, and travel buddy John, over the last 12 months and there has been a significant positive change in his outlook. Due to the one-to-one time spent on the journey from his home to the day centre with travel buddies encouraging him to make a verbal response he has become much more sociable and has grown in confidence. Ben will now approach travel buddies and day centre staff members he recognises and goes and shakes their hand and says hello. 04 Southside Partnership Annual Report 2010

Highlighting some of our services Fanon In this year, Fanon helped 720 people from BAME backgrounds and continued its enviable reputation for specialist services to people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. Services include; Fanon Resource Centre Lambeth, Fanon Resource Centre Merton, Somali Project, plus a number of specialist supported living services such as Fanon House. Community Outreach In 2009/2010, Community Outreach supported 140 customers in Southwark each week accounting for 5000 visits in total throughout the year. Beyond Prison Our prison resettlement programme supported 899 customers in 2009/2010 with the help of 33 peer volunteers; 65% of customers were from a BAME background. Less than 5% reoffended. Travel Buddy The Travel Buddy service now employs 18 people of whom almost half have a learning disability. In 2009/2010 the service supported 2570 journeys for buddies and customers. Person Centred Plans By end of 2009/2010 we were well on track to achieve 100% of Person Centred Plans for all our customers with learning disabilities by end Personal Assistants Southside Partnership has a team of 11 Personal Assistants who are matched to customers to support their interests and needs. We aim to expand this service in the future. 06 Southside Partnership Annual Report 2010

Other Southside Services include: Work Pathways Programme, Home and Dry Painting and Decorating, Scotch Bonnet, Fanon House, Shared Lives, Respite Services, Recovery and Social Inclusion, Volunteering, Peer Support, Supported Living. Southside Partnership Annual Report

I just want to be the same as everyone else... Moto * was referred to The Somali Project (a Fanon BME service) and he arrived at the service with a range of complex issues which added significantly to his mental ill health. Using Southside Fanon s Recovery Led Approach, a support plan was initiated which quickly resolved his communication, housing and GP issues. We improved his social interaction through activities at Fanon Resource Centre and referred him to Furniture Aid and Home & Dry to improve his new home. Moto was introduced to a number of new training, volunteering and educational opportunities. He took up learning English locally and reports that both his English and his confidence in communicating with others are much improved. All areas on his Recovery Star show improvement too, especially his Social Networks, Living Skills and Trust and Hope. 08 Southside Partnership Annual Report 2010

I just want to get back control of my own life... Anne *, an accomplished musician, became unwell although she didn t know it at the time. Her self care was almost non existent, she wasn t going out and she had lost contact with friends and family. After a fire at her home and a spell in hospital she returned home. At that point, our Community Outreach team provided her with support in her home. As a result Anne now takes her medication and feels much more stable. Friends and family have come back into her life and she is seeing people regularly and going to concerts, plays and galleries. Supported by our Work Pathways programme, she in the process of applying to become a Volunteer for another charity. She attends the gym and is planning to get back into playing and rejoining a local orchestra. Anne feels she has her life back. Southside Partnership Annual Report

Chair s Report In a world of significant financial turbulence we ended the year having yet again increased our revenue. Our reserves remain healthy and we are well prepared for a difficult year ahead. New ways of contracting with local authorities mean we are working with framework agreements rather than the more comfortable zone of block contracts. Personalisation also means more change as commissioners and providers grapple with the complexities of delivering services purchased directly by service user customers. Encouraged by the Government and the third sector, both of whom had identified the need for charities to work together to be more efficient and deliver better services, we took a bold step and decided to merge with another not-for-profit organisation, Support for Living that shares our values and our customer groups. The Board and Leadership Team invested time and effort exchanging information and completing due diligence prior to a final decision being made. The merger took place just as the financial year ended. I would like to thank my board colleagues, our Chief Executive and staff for putting Southside in great shape for the challenging year ahead. Steve Maingot Chair of the Board Southside Partnership Southside Partnership Annual Report

I guess it s about being ordinary Twelve months ago, after many years in institutions and care homes, Lynda * moved into one of our services. Her sister would come to see her, but could only manage to stay for a short time. Initially Lynda was often very distressed and presented many challenges to her house-mates and the people who supported her. She rarely left her house but when she did she would become very anxious and would often put herself in danger. Today, through using a variety of person centred approaches, her support team have enabled her to be much more actively engaged in her home and community. She now regularly goes out on her own to her local shop and attends her local church every Sunday where she was recently presented with a gift of chocolates by a fellow member of the congregation. Her sister, for the first time in many years, feels her relationship with Lynda has been restored and is able to spend quality time with her. 12 Southside Partnership Annual Report 2010
