1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF DINGLEY VILLAGE BULLETIN From the President Last week Wilma Best spoke to us about Goats & Cows Changing Lives in Kenya. This was a very interesting and humbling night. The plight of some people is beyond our comprehension unless we have lived through it. We can only empathise. As a result of this moving presentation by Wilma we donated a goat to the Project. The Jewellery ladies donated another Goat and subsequently a cow. It was also great to see so many Guests - Pam Davies - Pam Huber who clearly stated she would like to rejoin. Pam will be inducted next week - Pancho Xu who will also inducted next week - Stella Cugley - Sue Needham - Val Glenn - Veronica Podbury - Yvonne Jackson - Bruce Best - In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up for the purpose of doing good in the world. In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI. 29th July, 2015 THE ROTARY FOUNDATION S GOALS 1. Build a sense of ownership of our Foundation among Rotarians through their contributions to the Annual Programs Fund, the Permanent Fund, and our Rotary Peace Centres 3. Continue our progress on the Future Vision plan and align our service projects with the six areas of focus Peace and conflict prevention/ resolution Disease prevention and treatment Water and sanitation Maternal and child health Basic education and literacy Economic and community development This week is our Foundation Night with about 53 people on the Attendance List this promises to be a great night for socialising and fun. 3 Learning more about Rotary programs and projects Do you know what Interplast is and what it does? Interplast Australia and New Zealand is a non profit company incorporated in Victoria founded in 1983 as an association between the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the then Rotary District 980. It provides voluntary medical teams who carry out plastic and reconstructive surgery in developing countries. Programs are actively supported by Rotary Districts and Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand. Rotarians are members of the Company, the Board and the Interplast Rotary Committee. It has recently adopted the motto: Repairing Bodies, Rebuilding Lives. Interplast is staffed by volunteer Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and Registered Nurses from Australia and New Zealand. Rotary volunteers also accompany many of the medical teams and assist with various administraive and logistic tasks. Every year about 20 programs are conducted in our developing neighboring countries. These programs included consultations and operations and also involve intensive training programs and workshops for local doctors and medical staff. When an Interplast team arrives, they bring their own medical supplies to reduce burden on local hospital and use hospital clinic & theatres to undertake assessments and perform operations. A team usually comprises 2 surgeons, 1 anesthetist, 1 theatre charge nurse plus Interplast organizational support and maybe a Rotarian observer. The hospital provides diagnostic testing, nursing support & after care local surgeons and anesthetists supported and trained with team specialists. A typical schedule for a team might be: Day 1 Clinical assessment of 40 + patients Day 2 4 operations on all those assessed and able to be treated by team. Each day the team looks at results of previous operations and conducts more consultations with patients and local medical team. Page 3

4 Nigeria Sees No Cases of Wild Polio for 1 Year 24 July marked one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August. Every Rotarian in the world should be proud of this achievement, says Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran. We made history. We have set Africa on course for a polio-free future. But we have not yet reached our goal of a polio-free world. Raising funds and awareness and advocating with your government are more crucial than ever. Progress in Nigeria has come from many measures, including strong domestic and international financing, the commitment of thousands of health workers, and new strategies that reached children who had not been immunized earlier because of a lack of security in the northern states. In June, Rotary announced $19 million in grants for continued polio eradication activities in Africa, including almost $10 million for Nigeria. Since 1985, when Rotary launched PolioPlus, the program that supports the organization s polio eradication efforts, its worldwide monetary contributions to the cause have exceeded $1.4 billion. We ve come a long way and have never been so close to eradicating polio in Nigeria and around the world, but it s not a time to fully celebrate, says says Dr. Tunji Funsho. We have some grueling years ahead of us before WHO can certify Nigeria and Africa polio-free. Something to tickle your fancy compliments of Greg Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes. 6 The results from our first ever Form 6 national exams have been released and the achievements are inspiring. Our incredible students did so well that St Jude s ranked 3rd in our Region and 25th in the Nation! In addition to a 100% pass rate, 32 of our students achieved the highest mark of Distinction and the class ranked in the top 10% nationwide in chemistry, economics, advanced mathematics and physics. This is an amazing achievement that wouldn't have been possible without you. Thank you for supporting our students and in doing so fighting poverty through education.
