They conscientiously spread the Zonta brand through write-ups and/or announcements of club activities in media. It is no longer a surprise to see club officers being interviewed by TV anchors about a meaningful project or activity! Some clubs have set up a website, blog or Facebook page to document their activities. Membership Increase and Organizing New Clubs With the exception of a few clubs that still need a little prodding, the others have been aggressively working on increasing their club s membership with a few having reached their goal of 20% increase and still counting. Area 5 s baby club, the Zonta Club of Parañaque, headed by the very able and highly motivated president Rosario Chito Chavez, will have its charter presentation in February. This early, they have sponsored Pamaskong Handog for 300 students of Pilar Village Elementary School in Las Piñas City in December. The children who come from economically disadvantaged families were treated to a Jolibee party complete with loot bags of candies and toys. The club was SOMmed by Zonta Club of Makati Ayala. Now comes another good news -- with president Carol Llanillo of the ZC of Makati & Environs whispering that their SOMming efforts seem to be paying off. With some luck they should be able to organize the Zonta Club of Pasay & Environs before the District Conference in September This will be the second Zonta club to be organized in Area 5 this biennium which should bring a big smile on the face of our District Governor. 6 AREA 3 What s Keeping Area 3 Clubs Busy. By Flor Miel, Area Director The Area 3 Clubs had one activity after another, they hardly had a breather since their Area meeting in October, Service Projects Each club in Area 3 has its own service project that focuses on the prevention and elimination of violence against women and children. This comes under different names: Cebu I and II have their flagship project, the Women and Children Friendly Center at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center; Davao I has its Women and Children Protection Unit at the Davao Medical Center, Cagayan de Oro II has Mambuaya Women s Community Project, Cagayan de Oro I has its new Center for Women at the CDO Polymedic Medical Plaza. Other clubs have a Women s Crisis Center or a Center for Abused Women and Children. Every now and then seminars are held in the center on topics ranging from domestic violence, parenting, livelihood projects, gender sensitivity, and reproductive health. The Zonta Club of Cebu II recently held a Gender Awareness and Sensitivity Seminar at the USP Rizal Hall. The participants were its members and some invited male and female councilors from Barangay Alang-alang in Mandaue City. It was an interactive seminar with speakers Tess Fernandez of the Women s Commission of Cebu City and Dr. Consuelo Malaga, the coordinator of the WCFC at VSMMC. The workshops had everybody participating, including the males, which is encouraging. More male partners should be encouraged to attend future seminars for them to better understand women s woes with regards to domestic violence. 8 AREA 4 AREA 4 REPORT By Susan Carag, Area Director After the Club presidents and officers had been trained and installed during the first quarter of the biennum, it was time to buckle down to work and translate the beautiful plans that the TEAM SHINE presidents had laid out into concrete action. The clubs in Area 4 had their Ztn. Benifroi Pascual of the ZC Aparri conducting a lecture on RA 9262 held last November in Brgy. San Antonio, Aparri, Cgayan. ZC Aparri sponsored a Livelihood Skills Training on bangus deboning, fish embotido, fish lumpia and fish chips for fish handlers who are mostly women in Aparri, Cagayan. hands full, each pursuing the district goals uniquely in their own creative and caring ways to reach out to more disadvantaged women in Northern Luzon. The ZCs of Central Tuguegarao, Aparri and Ilocos Norte conducted service and advocacy projects that benefited young and elderly women in their respective areas. In September 2010, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao initiated a campaign on Anti- Violence Against Women (VAW) by educating young high school students in Tuguegarao City, both males and females, on the issues regarding women s rights, different forms of violence, and laws protecting women and children. The advocacy program that targets high ZC Central Tuguegarao officers and members in a student forum at the University of St. Louis as part of its No to Violence Against Women Campaign. PP Mila Lauigan is one of the resource speakers during the program. Over 1,000 students so far have voluntarily joined the signature campaign. school students, is believed to be an effective way of creating more awareness on the issue and preventing violence as the students are informed and educated during their teenage years, which will significantly impact on their adult life later on. The club s first Anti- VAW Forum was held at the University of St. Louis, which was attended by some 500 high school students in 2 nd year to 4 th year. On the other hand, around 300 students attended the other seminar that took place at the St. Paul University high school. The lawyers in the club, namely: Mila Lauigan, Mira Cabulisan, Angelique Lucero, Susan Danao and Jessibel Jacildo, alternated in handling the lectures. They easily tackled the 22

9 topics and expertly discussed the issues. That s harnessing the club s resources-- the members themselves are the club s greatest resource! Surprisingly, the high school students showed keen interest on the topic and voluntarily joined the signature campaign to Say No to Violence. The club members, headed by pres. Raquel Arnedo, were immensely gratified by the project s outcome, which they plan to conduct on a regular basis. The Zonta Club of Ilocos Norte, meanwhile, organized a lecture on cervical cancer and offered a free papsmear session to about 70 women beneficiaries. The club s very own Ztn. Lilibeth Rabago, an OB-Gyne, delivered the lecture in collaboration with other government agencies in their locality. ZC of Aparri also did its share in promoting Zonta s advocacy by providing a livelihood- skills training workshop to women who are working as fish handlers and housewives in Brgy. Macanaya, Aparri. Since Aparri is a coastal town where fishing is a major industry, the training was on food preparation of fish embutido, fish lumpia, fish chips and bangus deboning. In October, Northeastern Luzon was battered by a supertyphoon that left many homeless families, and flooded rice and corn fields about to be harvested, causing substantial property losses and crop damage. Electricity was cut off for about two weeks to even a month in far- flung areas in Cagayan. The Zontians of Central Tuguegarao responded quickly in helping the flood victims by donating food and distributing relief goods solicited from Zuellig Foundation to some 234 indigent families in Tuguegarao and the nearby towns of Enrile, Iguig and Amulung. It goes without saying that Zontians can always be counted upon to respond and show their compassion in times of disaster. ZC Central Tuguegarao: Pres Raquel Sumabat leads the club s Zonta Day Celebration with a Health and No to VAW Awareness Program in Brgy. Linao Tuguegarao City. ZC Ilocos Norte UN Day Celebration: Best National Costume goes to.puring Bueno ZC Tuguegarao Found: PP Wilma Guzman with the club s Literacy Program beneficiaries from the Dodan Elementary School.
