5 President s Message Page 5 Fellow Surveyors, Greetings, now that February has arrived and things are in full swing with our yearly L. S. Review classes, I would like to express my appreciation to the mentors that have volunteered their time and efforts towards the perpetuation of the Professional Land Surveying profession. I understand that it takes time away from your family, and the additional effort it takes to prepare the classes, even if you are proficient at the subject; once again to all of our volunteers, thank you. Thinking back to one of the 2009 newsletters found in an issue of the Professional Corner column, is a quote from Mr. Curtis Brown that says: Man s knowledge in its self does not make a profession: man must use knowledge to aid, assist, teach or benefit others. Application of knowledge to the affairs of others is an essential part of the definition of a profession. I will leave you with this thought, is there something you, as a Professional could do to aid, assist, teach or benefit someone preparing for this notoriously difficult exam? Think about it I look forward to seeing all of you at the February 17 th joint dinner meeting with the Desert Chapter, located at the Morongo Casino. Mr. Jay Seymour will be speaking on the New ALTA Standards. As always, Mr. Seymour promotes the profession to a higher standard. Until then, enjoy your month and as always happy surveying. Sincerely, Wm. Tim Smith, PLS Riverside/San Bernardino CLSA Chapter President

15 Trig-Star Event Information Saturday, March 19 Mt. San Jacinto College, San Jacinto, CA Page 15 Please plan to join the local chapter Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Mount San Jacinto College (San Jacinto campus 1499 N. State Street, San Jacinto, CA, 92583) for our inaugural consolidated Trig-Star event. In the coming weeks volunteers from our local chapter will be entering High School classrooms around our region to introduce the Profession of Surveying and the Trig-Star program. In previous years these volunteers then had to return to each of the participating schools in order to administer the exam. This consolidated event is a big step forward for the program and for spreading the word about the Profession of Surveying. In order to have a successful event we will need the support of our chapter members. Mount San Jacinto College has really stepped up and is providing immense support. They are willing to provide bussing to the event (certain criteria will apply), and they are providing the facility, food, help with advertising & press releases, and also volunteers. In order to ensure the sustainability of this consolidated event, and also to make it the best event we can make it, we need you to come out and participate, evaluate, and provide suggestions for next year s event. The Trig-Star program is an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the Profession of Surveying, and it is truly rewarding when you feel like you have generated some interest in the youth of today tomorrow s future. I hope to see you there! Tim Rayburn 2011 Trig-Star Committee Chair P.S. There is still time to reach out to local high schools. Contact Tim Rayburn at trayburn@rctlma.org or (951)

18 NSPS Surveying USA Page 18 NSPS Surveying USA Supporting National Geodetic Survey Missions 1. A historic opportunity to improve the nation s surveying framework On March 19th 2011, a first-ever simultaneous nationwide Global Positioning System (GPS) survey will be conducted by members of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) to commemorate National Surveyors Week and promote the numerous benefits of GPS. This effort will include volunteer surveyors from all 50 states and numerous U.S. Territories. Those survey data which meet requirements below will be a valuable contribution to the National Spatial Reference System, a nationwide survey control network which links and improves federal, state, and local surveying and mapping activities. To contribute your GPS data, simply fill out the attached field notes, then upload your data and mark description to using option > publish my solution. This will utilize the National Geodetic Survey s Online Positioning User Service to process and publish the survey results. 2. Publishing requirements 2.1 mark: Any permanent mark of public interest is acceptable. Existing NGS marks, particularly NGS bench marks, will provide the most value to geodetic models. Your state geodetic advisor can help in choosing specific marks (or bench mark lines) in areas of sporadic GEOID/GPSBM coverage (blank areas on this map) or rejected GPSBM (or adjacent bench marks) listed here. 2.2 GPS data: Publishing via OPUS requires a 4+ hour, dual-frequency GPS data file. Poor quality data (obstructed or noisy GPS) may fail the publishing quality filters. 2.3 equipment: See the acceptable antenna list: Fixed height tripods are preferred, or carefully measure height to the ARP (defined for each antenna at the ANTCAL website above.) Bring a camera for the required digital mark photos, as described on the attached form. 3.
