Mainly, it is a type of bi-directional text, usually in ancient manuscripts. Every other line is reversed with reversed letters. When reading boustrophedon text, you would read left-to-right on one line and the next line you would read right-toleft. To relate this to surveying you need to look no further than the Public Lands System and the method used to number the sections. (click to see Wikipedia for more information) Check Out The New Page on the RSB Website Archives First entry is an Adobe PDF document submitted by Dana Robie. It is a syllabus prepared by none other than William C. Wattles, circa 1943 for what was then known as the State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways. If you have documents, field notes, pictures, maps, etc. that you feel have historical significance, are important, know they should be kept but have no where to put them, or are just really cool that you would like to share, please submit them to Ryan at rversteeg@deainc.com If you need help getting them scanned we can help with that too. Thanks Dana for getting us going CLSA Voluntary Professional Development FREE, FREE, FREE!!!! Participation is now complimentary to State Association Members Click the link to print the forms:
5 President s Message Page 5 Fellow Surveyors, Greetings, first I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped during the month of March. I am sure I speak for everyone that gave of their time and effort that it is not about the thanks and great job but about the internal reward of knowing that in some small way, a young adult has been influenced towards the profession of Land Surveying. So, for the last time, thanks and great job everyone. During the last chapter meeting the subject of a day-hike to the Initial Point was discussed and Bill Hofferber has volunteered to head this event. I believe it to be an educational and physically challenging endeavor. Most of us have never been to the initial point, we have heard of it and maybe gave reference or have seen it on some mapping project, but how did it all come to be, who where the men (sorry ladies only men in those days) that forged through the brush, climbed the mountain and set a point to be used by us. How cool is that? Physically challenging is an under statement, from what I have heard it will kick your tripod. I am training now as to not be the last one up the hill. Thanks Bill. April 21 st chapter meeting will be at the Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga off the I-15. Just as a reminder, alcohol will only be consumed inside the restaurant bar during the social hour. There will be no alcohol in the meeting room, I am not sure of the reasoning behind that logic, but it is what it is. I hope to see you all there regardless of the rules or excuses. Until then, enjoy your month and as always Happy Surveying. Sincerely, Wm. Tim Smith, PLS Riverside/San Bernardino CLSA Chapter President
6 2011 Trig*Star Event Page 6 Our Trig*Star event, which was held on March 19 at Mount San Jacinto College, was a huge success. Attached are links to a couple of articles about the event: Press-Enterprise students participated from 18 different schools, including a small group of middle school students. Monetary awards were given by the Chapter for Overall First Place ($200), Overall Second Place ($100) and First Place from each school ($50). The overall winner was Joshua Lopez from Hemet High School with a perfect 100%. The second place winner had a 95% and finished in about 31 minutes. Time was kept during the exam to determine a tie-breaker if necessary. The even was organized by our Trig*Star committee (Tim Rayburn, David McMillan and Brian Hess) along with Lori Benson from MSJC. Lori and the school really came through for us and helped us obtain lunches for the students and volunteers and sent information to every school in the surrounding area. Great job done by everyone. There were several challenges for the students to compete in (pacing distances, area calculation and the height of the flagpole). ESRI donated some prizes for winners in these competitions. CLSA members also volunteered to help proctor the exam: Bill & Elena Hofferber Tim Smith Peter Wiseman Dee Smith Ed Hunt James Fivash David Eickhoff Rich Ray Fred Youna Ryan Versteeg Thanks to all the participants and other volunteers that made this day a huge success!
