6 President s Message Page 6 Oct Fellow Surveyors, Greetings, I will first begin by asking for your help with a very important fundraiser that has great hope and purpose associated with it. That s right it is the CLSA Annual Walk-A-Thon/5K More or Less Run. The Walk-A-Thon is scheduled to be on November 12 th at the Yucaipa Regional Park. We need you to get sponsors for the walk/run (the company you work for may be a good source as a sponsor). Your neighbor, cousin, work colleague, maybe your mother-inlaw, who knows until you ask. Ask, please.. The Riverside/San Bernardino Chapter of CLSA has several fundraisers each year, so as a chapter we can promote education through either the Trig Star program or Scholarships to young minds developing their survey knowledge. We can t do it without you; the backbone of our chapter is you the member. You are the ones to decide if this is worthy of your time, money and effort. I think it is or I wouldn t be asking for your help. If you have questions on How To me or better yet call me at and I will answer your How To s. Thanks, your time, effort and dedication to the profession is appreciated. We also need three to five volunteers to help with the small items that need attending to that will change the odds of the walk-a-thon being a big success. Time is of the essence in this case as time draws closer to Nov. 12 th, so please me at pls7910@gmail.com to volunteer, I look forward to hearing from 3 to 5 of you ASAP! Until then, enjoy your month and as always Happy Surveying. Sincerely, Wm. Tim Smith, PLS Riverside/San Bernardino CLSA Chapter President

9 LightSquared / LS Review Instructor Page 9 Oct LightSquared News A private corporation, LightSquared, has recently applied for a waiver from the FCC to build 40,000 broadband wireless internet towers across the country to provide wireless internet. The frequency being used by these towers is immediately next to the GPS signals that we need for precise measurements and tests have shown that widespread interference has been caused by the LightSquared project on GPS signals for many other industries and governmental uses of GPS (navigation, emergency response, etc.). Please visit for more information and up-to-date news on this proposed project. LS REVIEW INSTRUCTOR NEEDED The chapter is in need for a volunteer instructor for California Coordinates and Error Analysis for (2)-three hour sessions. Some materials can be provided, if necessary. The classes are held on Tuesday nights beginning January 10, The specific dates required for this course are to be determined. If you have an interest, please contact Dee Smith at deeksmith@aim.com.
