5 Fellow Surveyors, President s Message Page 5 Greetings, I hope the message finds you all doing well and prospering during what appears to be an upward swing in the development side of the economy. It has been three and a half long years of hard times for most of us. I believe thinking outside of the normal box of business has helped in the type of work we now do. Before the down side of the collapse happen, work flowed like the Nile River and for the most part if you were able to have a response for a client or potential client you had a signed agreement the same day. Well that of course slowed to a small crawl and that meant jobs were lost for some employees and some businesses closed their doors and tried other things such as truck driving, plumbing and even handyman services to feed their families. I have respect for these professions and anyone who knows what they are confronted with and does what it takes to protect and care for their family. So thinking inside the normal box is no longer a normal thing. If you are having a hard time finding work, I suggest you look outside the box for the New Normal. Membership has been on my mind lately and I encourage each of you to renew your membership mainly because, well, dues are due, point blank. On the other side of your membership dues there are benefits, good ones to ensure our existence as a profession during good times and bad times, like today. There are many things that go on at the state level, like legislation to be a voice when the rules are not conducive to our profession. If you are a business owner, general and professional liability insurance can be obtained at a significant rate reduction. I know because I use that benefit. I could go on about the benefits that you can enjoy as a member but I think if you went to the state CLSA web site, you could read for yourself all the wonderful things that we as a profession have at our finger tips. Website is real easy, See I made it easy for you, just cut and paste then you are well on your way to knowing what you are paying for. I will leave you with an invite, my wonderful wife Caren, will be hosting a roast for my 50 th and yes I will be turning the ripe old age of 50. Normally I do not invite people to my own celebration, sounds kind of weird to me however she does not know most of you and she has asked me for s, phone numbers etc. Well without missing anyone and to allow my laziness to prevail, you are all invited on the 18 th of June Saturday at 3 P.M. till whenever at Barletta Street, Temecula. I look forward to seeing you there, if you would please Caren at tccc90@msn.com to RSVP. She wants to make sure there will be enough food and drinks for everyone. Until then, enjoy your month and as always Happy Surveying. Sincerely, Wm. Tim Smith, PLS Riverside/San Bernardino CLSA Chapter President

8 Additional News Page 8 A couple of additional news items to pass along: LightSquared News A private corporation, LightSquared, has recently applied for a waiver from the FCC to build 40,000 broadband wireless internet towers across the country to provide wireless internet. The frequency being used by these towers is immediately next to the GPS signals that we need for precise measurements and tests have shown that widespread interference has been caused by the LightSquared project on GPS signals for many other industries and governmental uses of GPS (navigation, emergency response, etc.). Please visit for more information and up-to-date news on this proposed project. An article dated June 10, 2011 from Space News can be read at the following link and contains good news for the GPS community: Bad News for LightSquared In related news, a special session at the Survey Summit will be held with an executive from LightSquared. For more information please visit _A_ To register for The Survey Summit, click here: Passing of Hugh Johnston Hugh Leonard Johnston III departed this life and was received by our Lord on March 29, Hugh Johnston was a very diverse man who enjoyed skiing, skydiving, kayaking, jazz music, and new technologies. He was a vivacious reader who enjoyed many aspects of life. Hugh gained his survey education at the University of Alaska-Anchorage in the early 1970s. He rose through the ranks in projects such as the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and continued to survey in Alaska, Florida, Pennsylvania, Oregon and California. He spent time as a Cadastral Assistant with the State of Alaska, and taught survey at the city college level in Santa Ana, Calif. In his 16 years working for Trimble Navigation, he worked on a myriad of projects including the construction of the Laser Interferometry Gravitational Wave Observatory, the scanning of geysers in Yellowstone Park, and the Control Survey of the Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor. Hugh has trained thousands of survey personnel on three continents for private, governmental and military clients. Hundreds have taken advantage of Hugh's skill and experience in Post Processed GPS, RTK, and terrestrial training. He leaves to cherish his memories: one loving sister, one loving soul mate, one loving son, two wonderful grandchildren, and friends around the world. A gathering (was) held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2011, at Hugh's home in Coeur d'alene, Idaho. In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions can be made in Hugh's name at his favorite charity: Feed America,
