4 With this issue of the Tattler, you will see several format changes. Weather they be good or bad, I have had the fun playing with them. Recently, I have been working with a Lion from Arkansas City, Scott Cranford. He is quite a computer buff, and because he is tied down to a wheelchair, he spends a lot of time at the keyboard. He, for example, created the new flag for the front page, and with a few modifications I used his design onother pages in this issue of the Tattler. One addition I made was to add a bird to the Lion emblem. The bird is a Wandering Tattler and is seen bobbing and teetering among the rocks and waives during winter and migration. Some individuals spend the summer along the southern part of the range rather than go with the rest of the birds to their breeding grounds in the mountains of Alaska and northwestern Canada. This addition added a bit of spice to the graphic. Scott is working on some other changes which may also show up in future issues of the Tattler. I have recently become involved in working to get the Editors of Kansas Lions Club newsletters to dialogue with each other. Talking with one another wyll help make what we do better. It is through this avenue that I met Scott. What other changes will come in the Tattler? Only time will tell. I am having fun playing, and working with my new found friend. 5 COMMITTEE REPORTS The Communications Committee met at Aldersgate Village on February 19 th, with members Lions Menninger, Miller and Saylor present. Several issues were discussed, but no specific decisions were made. The committee agreed to meet again in a month, but rather than have a special meeting, try to have it at one of our Monday meetings during or after the meeting. 5

6 COMMITTEE REPORTS Journey for Sight update 2/25/2013 We welcome our Gold Sponsor, Gardner Roofing, Inc., plus our new Silver Sponsor, The Eye Doctors. We also received a supporter level donation from Lifetime Eye Care, Holton, KS The posters were distributed at the Lions Club meeting on Monday, Feb. 25, and the Registration Brochures will be ready on Thursday. Presently we have over 30 registered participants and the registrations are still coming in. Irene Owen brought posters to the following locations on Monday. YMCA (Downtown) YWCA Planet Sub Garry Gribbles Running Sports Hy-Vee Any other Lions club members please send Irene Owen a report on the locations where you dropped off posters to add to this list. 6

7 COMMITTEE REPORTS We have a 1/4 page ad in the Sunflower Strider's Newsletter and a Black and White ad will be in the Capital-Journal on Wednesday, Feb. 27th and Thursday, Feb. 28th. and the following week on Monday and Tuesday. Our event is posted on the community calendar at wibw.com and soon will be on the countrylegends1069fm.com community calendar. A request to be on the WIBW News at 4 within the next week has been submitted, we await to get a date and time slot. Finally, if I have not already reported this, Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center is donating 100 lunch kits for all the participant packets. 8 COMMITTEE REPORTS Eight Lions have volunteered for answering phones at KTWU on March 14th. If anyone else wants their name put on the substitute list if something comes up with one of the scheduled volunteers, they can call Lion Les Carlson. Those Lions volunteering for this date are: Dave Frantz, Ray Miller, Mark Saylor, Barbara Smith, Spencer Smith, Don Spradling, Gene Wunder and Les Carlson. Lion Mark Saylor has been working with the Topeka Sunflower Lions Club to update our eyeglass collection station list. The list is in the process of being revised, and will be published in the Tattler soon. Once Lion Mark has completed his work, any additions or corrections will need to be sent to Lion Phil Menninger, who will be the Eyeglass Pick-up Coordinator for our Club. Lion Vern Failor, of the Topeka Sunflower Lions, has created a Excel file of our Collection Station list and has volunteered to maintain the list as it is completed. As the new Eyeglass Collection Station list is completed, it will be circulated via the Tattler for any additions or corrections. 8

9 Lion Phil Menninger introduced the only current candidate for our Lion District Governor, Gary Adkins. Lion Adkins Expressed his concern that too many Lions in Kansas think that their clubs are not doing enough to support their communities. Using our club as an example, he listed all the programs that we sponsor in Topeka: eyeglasses for those who cannot afford them, planting trees in town, helping the Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka, the Travel Film Series, cleaning the Shunga Trail, Journey For Sight, the golf tournament, etc. We are like so many clubs whose members do not recognize our own value to our community. Gary pointed out that many of our civic leaders may not realize our contributions, either. We need to speak up. Lions need to pat themselves on the back occasionally. Sometimes Lions clubs which are great achievers lack self esteem. He used the great basketball player, Michael Jordan, for example of an achiever who does not acknowledge "un"achievement: He had 3,000 attempted shots that could have won a game but did not, yet he did sink 26 shots to win a game. His point: he kept on trying though he did not get that glorious moment of notoriety. Gary Adkins is simply asking us to keep up what we are doing for we are making an impact on our community, we simply need to realize it ourselves. He also wants us to know that an international Lions gathering will be in Overland Park Convention Center September It is called "The USA/Canada Forum". It is an annual leadership forum for any Lion. Our BIG LION has the information for any one interested. Gary Adkins can use the help of any Lion who can spare four hours to greet the Lions as they arrive for the forum. 9

10 2 nd Vice-District Governor Gary Adkins, spoke to our Lions Club this passed Monday about the USA/Canada Forum, coming to Overland Park on September 19 th. It is coming to our home territory, and it is a chance of our life time to get the best of Lionism we could ever get anywhere. We do not often see an event such as the USA/Canada Forum coming to our backyard. From reviewing the program, it looks to be an outstanding Forum, and well worth the effort to attend. It will probably come our way only once, and even if it did come again, at my age, I probably would not be here to enjoy it. Governor Gary passed out a brochure about the Forum. If you did not get one, and would like one, please let me know, and I will see that you get one. It has all you need to know about the Forum, including a registration form. Our Lions Club meets weekly and except for the few items brought up in the announcements at the beginning of each meeting, very little is mentioned about what our Club has done, is doing, and wants to do. At the last meeting of the Communications Committee Lion Mark Saylor suggested that we get the Club members involved. Let s ask them to tell us how we are doing. What aren t we doing that we should be doing? What changes, if any, need to be made to make our Club stronger? What other suggestions might our Club members have to offer? Blank comment cards will be available at every meeting. The Committee invites your comments. The cards collected at the last meeting, and the cards from subsequent meetings will be taken to the next board meeting for discussion. Look what the snow brought! 14
