1 Issue 1 Add Life to Your Years February & March 2019 Program Cancellations a Cold Necessity It was a difficult decision to make. The forecast for the week of February 4 was expected to bring temperatures of below minus 30 degrees with up to 30 cm of snow, said Executive Director Susan Mann. With the safety and security of our members at the top of our mind, Our staff gathered to discuss the policy along with the repercussions of the cold weather and the possible affect on our members. Finally on Sunday, Feb. 2, the decision was made to cancel Monday s classes, with anticipation of cancellations Tuesday s too. The outgoing message on our main phone line was changed to reflect the cancellations, and staff began calling members to advise of the class cancellations. Every member who was affected will receive a refund for the missed class, which will appear on their account. We didn t receive as much snow as was predicted, and being such a hardy bunch of Edmontonians, administration decided to go ahead with classes for the remainder of the week. Mann added We consulted with several other senior s centres, who also cancelled classes on Monday and Tuesday, but decided to open the rest of the week. We want to thank our members for your understanding and patience through this cold snap. We ll also need your patience while you wait for the credit to be processed by the City of Edmonton and have it appear on your account. City of Edmonton Point of Sale Computer System Remains Offline The manual registration process has been a challenge for members and staff since the end of December. We thank you for your continued patience during this change over and the minor confusion it has caused. The City is working to remedy the issues as quickly as possible. In the mean time, we continue with the manual process and will notify you as soon as RAMS is online. You will hear a large YAHOO! from the front office when this occurs!

5 Special Events and Activities Everyone s Invited to Cuppa Corner Every Tuesday in the CLSA Atrium from 10 am - 1 pm, the coffee is on for everyone to enjoy. Once each month, a special Cuppa corner is held to celebrate a holiday or just to have some fun, and occasionally an exhibitor is on hand promoting something of interest to seniors. 1st Choice Year - Round Home & Yard Maintenance Fall yard clean-up Snow shoveling Home repairs, inside & out Light plumbing: toilets - sinks - taps Painting Vacation home checks Feel free to drop a donation into the collection can to help us keep it going. 50/50 Raffle Our Fund Development Committee decided to combine the sales of 50/50 tickets into six draws each year. Tickets are available at the fitness centre and front office for $5 each. Revenue generated through this fundraising activity support our programs. Next draws are Feb. & Mar 19th. 6 This n That Seniors Outreach Social Services Strathcona Place Outreach Team (S.P.O.T.) Feeling a little down this holiday season? Do you have questions about community support? We ll help you navigate through community resources! In partnership between CLSA and Strathcona Place Seniors Centre, a SPOT team, funded by the City of Edmonton FCSS, an Outreach Intern will be at CLSA every Tuesday, providing free access to social services and community resources. Our long-standing policy is to cancel programs that do not attract the minimum number of participants. Please help us avoid the disappointment by registering early. 7 Volunteering Volunteering at the Centre All volunteers who donate five hours/month, track and submit their hours are entered into a draw for a $25 CLSA gift certificate. It s a small token of our appreciation for the time and effort you put into our organization. The winners of the $25.00 gift certificate for November was Ester E., and December was Beverly R. and January was Carol K. The certificate can be used toward any CLSA program or activity. To become a volunteer, applicants are interviewed, complete a criminal record check and attend three hours of City and Association training. The next volunteer intake training will take place in the Fall. We Need You! Volunteers are needed to fill the following positions: Ambassador - Greet guests, provide facility tours, act as host for General Interest presentations, and more. Fitness Centre Reception - assist with the administrative activities in the Fitness Centre by issuing passes, collecting fees, answering questions, scheduling orientations, and more. Volunteer of the Month By Rita Makkannaw Carlo van Berkel has been spending several days each week over the past year and a half helping with data entry and more so that staff can track things like course evaluations and memberships. Carlo was born on Holland and moved to Canada with his family when he was 11 years old. He grew up in Calgary, and as a young man, attended the University of Lethbridge. He has many years of connection with the Center as his stepfather Armand Derosier played a major role in the expansion of our building to what it is today. At one time the area south of the cafeteria was actually outdoors, but thanks to a great team it has become a part of the building as we see it today. Carlo s wife has been an active member of the table tennis club as well, so there is a long-time connection. Carlo spent 15 years helping to get the Living Light News, a Christian newspaper, to press. As well as his computer skills he also has a degree in psychology. Yes, your course evaluation forms are important and are scrutinized by staff. It helps administration in their decisions as to what is popular and most beneficial to you the members, and Carlo is instrumental in making them readily available. A big thank you goes out to Carlos for all his help and dedication to CLSA. 7
