With our cap of 175, this means we are saying goodbye to 10 members who are moving on and we certainly wish them well. Last year we reached a milestone for our club and received our 5 years certificate from Probus Canada. Sadly we lost our Charter President, Andrew MacLeod. We will miss his enthusiasm, wit and valuable leadership skills. I want to thank all members of the 2018 Management Team who provided such great support for both Michael Young and myself during the year. I would also like to thank Barb Mooney and Sandra Young. We will miss their many contributions to our Probus Team. A great big hug and thanks to Michael Young for his thoughtful leadership in The 2019 Management Team will welcome a new VP, Peter Nelson. Keith Langston is back supporting the Interest Groups with Joy Penttila. Jim Mossman has agreed to remain as a Member at Large and to continue to share his expertise in all things Probus. One of our goals this year among many, is to increase participation and encourage members to get involved at any level they feel comfortable with. Anyone who is interested in participating or has new suggestions for Interest Groups or Social Events should contact either myself or Peter Nelson. We have a great year coming up with a winter blues challenge at the Deerhurst Escape Rooms, a return to Little Place By The Lights offered with the popular play Mamma Mia, and coming back by popular demand is the Shunpiker. We have excellent speakers for our General Meeting including Steve Dengler who helicoptered around the world. So come out, enjoy and get involved. 2 Huntsville Lakes Probus Club Newsletter Issue: Jan/Feb 2019 Page 2 Our January Guest Speaker Craig MacDonald The Story of Snowshoes Craig is a well known outdoorsman, adventurer, canoeist, trail expert and map maker. He spent 47 years working for the Ministry of Natural Resources as a recreation specialist at the Leslie M Frost Centre in Dorset and in Algonquin Park. Craig describes his career as mostly working deep in the woods. As a ethno-geographer and Cree-Ojibwa place-name linguist. Craig spent 27 years of research interviewing hundreds of aboriginal elders and traveling over 1000 miles in the backcountry exploring native traditional summer and winter methods of travel and mapping their routes. Known as the Mapman of Temagami, Craig s research resulted in the Historical Map of Temagami depicting the traditional native names and routes before the influence of white man. Craig has also authored the map of the Leslie Frost Centre and much of his field work developed the modern map of Algonquin Park. Craig s passion for the outdoors in winter has led to his collection of heritage and aboriginal snowshoes which he brings to us today in The Story of Snowshoes.
