1 O C T O B E R V O L U M E 3 1, I S S U E October Newsletter October Program Fun with Circles with Cathy Rogers Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 7 pm Senior Citizens Center Remember block exchange blocks, UFOs, Shows &Tells, and fat quarter exchange. October Meeting Program: Fun with Circles Date/Time: October 11, 7 pm Place: Senior Center Greeters: Cindy Skelton, Faye Olson Treaters: Cathy Rogers, Cindy Skelton, Faye Olson, Susan Hedahl Fat Quarter: Reproduction Shout out to all you UFOers. December s getting closer. How many from your list will you be showing at show and tell? (Our meetings are the second Tuesday of each month so you can mark your calendar now. They start at 7 pm unless otherwise noted. Also a meeting of the FQG Board and Committee Chairs starts at 6 pm preceding the regular meeting. Members are welcome to attend any time. If you have a specific issue though, please let the president know so she can put it on the agenda.)
2 Page 2 September Meeting Great fun with Linda Gimenez and the quick Lotus bag. We had so much fun with it that we decided that a lotus bag would be our exchange gift at the Christmas party. (Quickie instructions and websites in separate article.) Annie Neiffer was a double winner taking home a door prize and the fat quarters. Connie Brauer was the second door prize winner. October 2016 Volume 31, Issue 10 Linda Gimenez, right, gives instructions to her Vanna, Deana Wilson, as she begins her Lotus Bag presentation. Quickie instructions for Lotus Bag Materials: 2 contrasting fat quarters Cording or ribbon for drawstring Directions: Here are the quickie instructions for the lotus bag. More complete instructions, plus a link to video instructions are listed below. If you do not have a computer and need the instructions, please contact me and I ll mail them to you. 1. Cut the largest square you can with your fat quarters right sides together. (or smaller if you want a smaller bag.) 2. Put the right sides together and sew around the edges using a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving an opening on one side for turning fabric. Trin the corners. 3. Turn the pouch right side out and top stitch around the edge with a 1/8 allowance, This will close the gap you left for turning. 4. Measure in 3 inches in from each corner and mark with a pin. Fold the corner in and iron. Stitch 3/8 inch from the folded edge to form the casing for the ribbon. This makes the leaves. 5. Insert the ribbon or cording through all four casings Thread narrow-ish ribbon through the bag casing. Knot or finish as desired. Then starting at the opposite opening, thread another ribbon, knot or finish. Pull the knots to close the bag. Further information: Allfreesewing.com - Video from the Gourmet Quilter - Exchanging Fire website - Mercy Home Christmas Giving starts this month Have you been saving those hotel shampoos and soaps? Have you been picking up travel size toothpaste, deodorant or other toiletries? Now is the time to bring them in. There will be a basket at the October, November and December meetings for them. All toiletries are welcome and it s especially nice when they are travel size so all the women can have something of their own. Help us make this annual project a big success. Thanks to Sandy Syvertson and Susan Volf for volunteering for collecting and delivering the toiletries this year. (The Mercy Home shelter program provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence. A comprehensive explanation of the program is on the YWCA website.)
