1 District 12 Unity News April 2019 AA Thought for the Day (courtesy AA-Alive.net) April 2, 2019 Our Troubles Selfishness self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles. Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we invariably find that at some time in the past we have made decisions based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt. - Alcoholics Anonymous, (How It Works) p. 62 Thought to Ponder Happiness and peace of mind are always here, open and free to anyone. AA-related 'Alconym' A A = Altered Attitudes. I am responsible... When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible. 3 Secretary Report March 2019 District Meeting The District 12 meeting was held at Hope Valley in Hickory. There were 23 voting members. The meeting was opened with the Serenity Prayer. SECRETARY Lory read last month s minutes, which were accepted. TREASURER Dean reviewed the treasurer s report, which was accepted DCM Debbie stated that she and Donna attended the conference for new DCM s and alternates. She reviewed her experience and the learnings she acquired. District 12 will host the Western Pre-Conference on April 27 th. Anyone interested in helping can join the planning committee. She also asked for feedback on any redistricting issues they may want presented. Brochures are available for the Area 51 Spring Assembly in Raleigh. She encouraged the website usage. She reported that there were 5 calls to the hot line for meetings, two for needs to talk. ALT DCM Donna stated that the RHA Detox meetings needed support, especially on Friday nights at 7 pm. She also talked of the conference, stating some parts were frustrating, some wonderful. LCM BURKE Charles stated that the Into Action Sunday 8:00 pm meeting had taken a vote to see about moving to 6:30 pm, but he was unsure of how the vote ended up and will work with the schedule changes needed if indeed it has changed. He also stated he would be responsible for having a key to the Queen Street Club to open for the next District meeting. LCM CATAWBA Kathy was not present. LCM CALDWELL - Steve was not present. He messaged Debbie, stating he would not be continuing in this role, and hence the position is open. CFC (CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES COORDINATOR) Robert stated he still needs volunteers for all groups, but especially in Burke, where volunteers come from neighboring counties to do the group. If no one volunteers, there may be a lapse in group availability. Any subscriptions for Grapevines a group would like to donate to the prisons would have to be sent to the group, and brought to Robert to take to the inmates, as the prisons are not always responsible to deliver them where needed. He stated that there are requests for NA groups in Burke and Caldwell facilities. CPC/PI (COOPERATION WITH PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY/PUBLIC INFORMATION) Annie was absent but sent word in by way of Phillip that she had joined the PI group in BSAN. She stated that there will be Public Service Announcements concerning recovery coming out soon. TFC (TREATMENT FACILITIES COORDINATOR) Sara reviewed her volunteer meeting stating that all positions are filled, and all volunteers seem to be doing well. REGISTRAR Cheri stated there were 3 updates in Catawba, and 1 in Burke. PUBLICATIONS Steve stated he made extra Unity News and schedules as he had extra paper. All updates should have been completed. GRAPEVINE REP Mary stated she is updating her subscription and encouraged everyone to utilize the Grapevines, especially for newcomers. WEBMASTER Marty announced that the website meetings are all up to date. He has not received the usage report yet. He asked to be informed of any support requests, events, and corrections for the website. OLD BUSINESS Debbie announced that Unity Day will be June 8 th at 1 st United Methodist Church in Hickory. She asked all to check with their groups if a sub-committee was needed to organize the event. Responses were given positively about adding stories, cartoons, crosswords, jokes and birthdays to the Unity News, with a suggestion made that entries be place on a submission page on the website. Marty and Steve will coordinate possible options for these entries. NEW BUSINESS Debbie shared that there are two new AA pamphlets The God Word, written by atheists and agnostics, and AA for Alcoholics with Mental Health Issues. SSAASA information added below. Debbie asked about the District cooperating with Hickory Recovery.org to update their listing of AA meetings. It was suggested that they check the District website for all updates they may need. A discussion concerning contributions to the facilities hosting the District ensued; it was decided to ask the groups for feedback and possibilities of how to accomplish this if passed. Marty informed everyone that the Caldwell Discussion Group will reinstate their last Thursday of the month Speaker meetings. He stated that they could utilize support. The meeting was closed with the Lord s Prayer. 7 Corrections Article for Volunteers We have a urgent need for support in the area correctional facilities. The process for volunteering is simple. Fill out an application and mail it to the facility you want to volunteer at. It can take several months to be approved so be patient. The general guidelines are not to have any pending legal charges and be off any probation or parole supervision for 12 months. One year sober time is also suggested. For the official NCDOC application form, Robert R. at CFC@ncd12aa.org or download the form at: Link to AA pamphlet: What can you do if you cannot volunteer or have other issues? 1: Offer to speak at a correctional setting. (You can go in one time a year as a visitor.) 2: Volunteer to be a temporary contact upon an inmate s release and take them to their first outside A.A. meeting. 3: Provide the correctional facilities, with their permission, with DVDs of A.A. material. 4: Donate the price of a Big Book and the Twelve and Twelve to your local corrections committee, as well as back is- sues of the Grapevine and A.A. Conference- approved literature. 5: Correspond with an inmate through the Corrections Correspondence Service. 6: Support your district, area or intergroup/central office correctional facilities committees. Participate in correctional facilities workshops Remember when anyone, anywhere reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there FOR THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE. They can not have a meeting without a volunteer present. One is all it takes. If I can be of any assistance you can me at CFC@ncd12aa.org. 7
