Ruth Ellis Center (REC) is named in honor of the life and work of Ruth Ellis, who was respected and loved for her longevity and endurance as one of Detroit s oldest and proudest African-American lesbians and for her many years of service to all people in need. Ruth was born in 1899 and came out as a lesbian in Beginning in the 1930s, Ruth provided shelter, physical support and spiritual affirmation to those whose race, sexual orientation or both set them apart from the dominant culture. Ruth lived to the age of 101, seeing the Center come to being prior to her passing in The work we continue to do at the Ruth Ellis Center is built upon her model of responsibility to oneself and one s community. Over a 19-year history, REC has established a national reputation for quality and innovation in providing trauma-informed services for runaway, homeless and at-risk lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and young adults of color. What began as a 500-square-foot safe space in Highland Park, MI has evolved into a multi-faceted organization, operating a 10,000 square foot facility in Highland Park, providing outreach and safety -net services, integrated primary & behavioral health care services and case management, skill building workshops, HIV prevention programs, and family preservation programming; as well as the operation of the only State licensed and contracted residential foster care program specifically for LGBTQ youth in the Midwest, Ruth s House located a short drive from the Center in Detroit. 3 An Auction of 30 Bespoke Pairs of Pants An auction of 30 pairs of pants? This is certainly a different kind of event. Tell us how you came up with the idea? 30 By Jim Luckey has raised more than $50,000 for Ruth Ellis Center since the inaugural event in April, I wanted to do something for Ruth Ellis Center, and I wanted to bring greater awareness to this crisis. Hundreds of LGBTQ youth rely on Ruth Ellis Center's programs and services because they are being rejected by their families, schools, and communities based solely on their identity. It breaks my heart and we need to do more. This is something I can do. Designing is my passion and I hope it will inspire others to use their passions in a similar way. Your pants have become widely known for their bold patterns and vibrant colors. How are your designs inspired? Honestly, in the beginning, I was just looking for well -fitted pants that weren't blue, black, grey or khaki. For too long, cultural norms have dictated that men's pants should be one of four colors, and that didn't fit me anymore. After many years as an architect, I retired about five years ago. At that time, I went through a bit of a reinvention. A big part of that reinvention was my own expression, and I couldn't find clothing that matched how I felt. I had learned how to sew as a child, and so I found a pair of pants that fit me well, deconstructed them, and used them as a pattern for my very first pair. Looking back, they were relatively low-key in comparison to some of my more recent designs (smiling). This year s auction will also include a women s pant design. In a small way, giving back to the Center in this way allows each of us the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of an incredible woman. Ruth Ellis impacted so many during her lifetime, and her legacy continues through the work of Ruth Ellis Center. VISION
