1 President s Message Attention All Members: Welcome back to the new fiscal year of the AAUW Camarillo branch! I hope your summer was full of fun, and that you re as excited as I am to launch our new year. Many thanks to our elected officers, who have been working all summer, to make sure this season is off to a great start. The theme for this coming year is Growth Through Diversity. For our branch to thrive, our membership must be reflective of the diversity of our community, in age, race, and professions. So I m issuing a challenge to our members. Reach outside our comfort zones and invite someone we don t know, someone who is a different age or ethnic background or profession, to learn more about AAUW. Have you thought about asking your doctor, nurse, or dentist? What about a salesperson or that interesting woman you met in line? We want to add 50 new members this year, and bringing in new perspectives means our branch can thrive by being relevant to our community. You will hear more from me on this in the future, with more ideas on where to look. Of course, that doesn t mean you shouldn t ALSO invite friends and colleagues to join. They are always welcome! Important Dates Sunday, September 18 Annual Kick-off Meeting This is a great opportunity to invite friends, family, and new, diverse potential members to learn about all the great activities going on with AAUW Camarillo. If you have a professional business and are interested in reaching the 100 or so guests, sponsorships are available ( me soon!). All Committee Chairs are asked to have table displays too, a great way to recruit members and increase involvement. Saturday October 22nd Authors Day Luncheon Planning is in the works, and tickets will soon be available. We expect over 100 people to attend, and sponsorships are also available for this event ( me). Meet and hear from the people involved in programs like Day with an Author, Women's History, Knowledge Bowl, Tech Trek, and more! See how you might get involved. A recommendation has been made to limit size of clubs to members.

3 AUTHORS DAY October 22, 2016 Don't be left out. Mark your calendars for this all important, annual event. Please remember that it is our largest fundraiser of the year, and we rely on your continued support for our branch's re-entry CSUCI scholarships, Tech Trek exposure for local 8th grade girls, CSUCI student attendance at the National Conference for College Women and Student Leaders, and other AAUW Educational Foundation programs. Our four authors this year are Paul Bishop, a nationally renowned interrogator and behaviorist; 35-yrs with LAPD and author of 20 books; Patty Smiley, author of the Tucker Sinclair mystery series; James Ziskin, author of the Ellie Stone mysteries; and Ellen Byron, journalist, television writer, and author of Cajun country mysteries. TICKETS are now on sale, and will be available at the upcoming Kickoff meeting September 18. Each ticket is $50. The event will be held at the Four Points Sheraton in Ventura, and we will dine on salmon, tri-tip, or pasta. If you wish to book an entire table, know that they seat nine people. Tickets will continue to be on sale until a week before the event. 4 Renew Your AAUW Membership Online by Agatha Miller Here are a few tips on how to renew our membership for those of us who are current members. Since your information is already on the National data base, all you need to do is to type This should bring up the AAUW Official Site. Next, click on Member Tools, and follow the prompts. When your profile (name) comes up, look at the information to see if it is correct. Then, look on the left side under Member Program, and click on renew my membership, follow the prompts, and you can charge the amount on your credit card and even get a printed Membership Card. Hope this helps those members who like to renew this way. For those who wish to mail in their payment and form, it is located on page 13. Thanks for Helping to Make the Creative Arts Workshop a Success by Karen Allen, CAW Director Thank you to everyone who saved "scrounge items" for Creative Arts Workshop this year! Your "trash" became our "treasures!" Many thanks, too, to all of those who sent their young ones to the workshop! 6 PUBLIC POLICY CALIFORNIA UPDATE: The AAUW CA Public Policy Committee met in March, 2016 to review bills submitted in this second year of the California Legislative Session, and determine on which bills we should take positions. The AAUW CA Public Policy Priorities for are the framework that guides these decisions and gives direction to our Legislative Advocate Shannon Smith Crowley. Out of the over 2,000 bills introduced, the Committee gave special attention to around 60. Clearly this number needed to be reduced in order to have a manageable advocacy agenda. Considerations in making these bill evaluations include depth of AAUW expertise on the issue, expertise among coalitions of which AAUW CA is a member, and took into account the results of the 2015 Session in which some AAUW- supported bills were vetoed by the Governor. The decision was make to give highest priority to bills related to Pay Equity, Title IX, and STEM. AAUW CA continues to participate in the Stronger California Advocates Network. This coalition, formed last year, has over two dozen member organizations, some with established Capitol credentials and many new to advocacy but with significant experience in working with communities affected by the four pillars supporting the California Women s Economic Agenda. Pillar One Fair Pay and Job Opportunities Pillar Two Access to Childcare Pillar Three Family Friendly Workplace Pillar Four Eradicating Poverty Last session Stronger California was instrumental in the passage of SB 358, the Fair Pay Act. However, two other bills related to Equal Pay were vetoed by the Governor. These two have been reintroduced this session with AAUW CA as co-sponsor: - AB 1676 Campos, would limit an employer from seeking salary history information about an applicant for employment, and will codify case law declaring it illegal for an employer to rely solely on one s prior salary when establishing the new rate. - AB 1890 Dodd, requiring large state contractors to submit plans for fighting gender pay inequities to the state, including the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls for analysis by their new California Pay Equity Taskforce.

7 PUBLIC POLICY Con t. - A third Pay Equity bill, co-sponsored by AAUW CA, is SB 1063 Hall. Black and Latina women continue to earn considerably less than Caucasian women, and SB 1063 would prohibit wage disparities based on race or ethnicity in addition to wage disparities due to opposite sex covered by SB 358 (Jackson, 2015). Additional 2016 bills on which AAUW CA has taken positions can be found on our website click here. This site is updated daily so that members can follow the progress of these bills that are important in working to achieve equity for women and girls. You can participate in the legislative process by signing up for Action Alerts which are direct messages sent to legislators when bills are up for critical votes, or are going to the governor. Go to to sign up for Action Alerts, which will enable you to receive notices to act from both national AAUW and AAUW CA. If you want to be even more involved, we are collecting stories from members about how pay discrimination has affected your lives. These will be particularly helpful when trying to persuade the Governor to sign the Gender Pay bills. Submit your story to legislativeadvocate@aauw-ca.org. CAMARILLO UPDATE: Our Public Policy Committee has grown and is moving forward with our Title IX project for the local Oxnard/Union High Schools. Come join us to help ensure girls in the local schools have equal access to educational and athletic opportunities. Public policy was the original impetus for the creation of the AAUW and remains the central pillar of the organization. Let s walk our talk and show up to support this important event!
