Jane plays Fred Armison s mom on Portlandia. Jake s Grill is located across the street from the streetcar stop at the corner of SW 10th Ave and Alder. It is near The Galleria parking structure, located one block away across the street from the Galleria MAX stop at Morrison and SW 10th Ave. The RSVP form for the luncheon is on page 3. Not to mention just having fun! At our Annual Meeting in March, the branch conducted important business: bylaws amendments to restructure the branch Board of Directors, and to elect new officers and convention delegates. Congratulations to new Study Group VP Carla Huegli and Co- Finance VPs Linda Loftin and Sue Karstad, and our thanks to Ginny McQueen and Ann Copeland for continuing their service on the Board. We also want to celebrate a number of branch accomplishments and to thank our branch leaders for their wonderful work. Program VP Diane Winn and her committee have been doing an outstanding job. We have had excellent speakers on a variety of topics, including our own Liz Estabrooks on the special challenges faced by women military veterans, and Lisa Dobson on the difficulties faced by student parents. Barbara Spencer led an informative presentation about intersectional feminism and maintained our close ties with PSU. The collaboration with PSU culminated in the phenomenal April program featuring Brenda Tracy, where the ballroom was filled with student athletes, faculty and the public to hear the mesmerizing story of Brenda s journey from sexual assault victim to activist. Our STEM program continues to thrive under the active direction of Barbara Miner, Lisa Perrine and Sue Thomas. Portland Branch s membership has flourished under Ginny McQueen s leadership. Donna Pregill s commitment to active study and interest groups has allowed us to continue our potpourri of reading, movie watching, having breakfast, walking wimpily and just enjoying each other s company. Judy Holt got a fundraiser going at the last minute to benefit Portland State University s Student Parent Center. She also came up with the idea of a virtual fundraiser, which at latest count has generated over $1, Karn Hill has done a yeo-woman s job of keeping our Branch s meeting minutes, and Ann Copeland has kept us in good financial standing. Nancy Cheverton and Ilga Ross have been working hard to spruce up our website, and it shows! Join us at the Honor s Luncheon on May 18 th to celebrate our branch achievements. We are sure all of you want to continue to enjoy these activities, so please remember that it is time to send in your renewal! You can now do so via our website. 7 Introducing New Members of the Branch Patricia Harkleroad In 2013, I returned to live in Oregon after retiring from an enriching life of travel, culture and teaching in the US and foreign countries. I spent my childhood living on the Canadian border in Washington State but graduated from Mt. Angel College in 1964 with a degree in Child Development and Early Childhood Education. I taught in both Oregon and Washington. In 1965, I entered the Peace Corps as a volunteer for St. Lucia-Barbados, W.I., teaching and working in community development. In 1968, I returned to the US, after traveling throughout South America, and entered the California College of Arts in Oakland. While there, I also taught in the Berkeley and Albany schools as an Art and Early Childhood teacher. In 1980, I accepted an Early Childhood ESL position in Pago Pago, American Samoa, and then completed my teaching career in Wiesbaden, Germany, with the Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools. I am currently a board member of the Oregon Icon Institute. I look forward to meeting everyone. Valerie Sanford Born and raised in Glendale, CA, I came to the Pacific NW for my 18th birthday and never looked back. I hold a BA in History/Political Science from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. I am a technology-refugee, leaving 25 years of marketing, sales, and product management in technology start-ups and global companies to help indie beauty businesses bring sustainable products to market. I have lived in Tel Aviv, Vancouver, BC, and Savannah, Georgia; Seattle has been my home for 33 years. I am a past trustee of Seattle Girls School, as well as a past AAUW Washington State Fundraising Chair, and I served on the national fundraising committee. I am a supporter of Girls, Inc. and have sponsored several Tech Trek girls. I celebrated 26 years of marriage in January, and we have two wonderful dogs who keep us laughing. Continued on page 8
8 Introducing New Members of the Branch (continued) Kathleen (Kathy) Terman I grew up in Carmel, CA, but I spent most of my life in Chicago. I attended the University of Chicago, majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. I joined Commonwealth Edison in Chicago as a computer programmer after graduation, and over the course of my career there and at Exelon, I rose to being an IT Director. In 2012, I took an early retirement from Exelon and returned to California to work at Southern California Edison. At the end of 2016, I became the Director of Application Services at Portland General Electric. I ve been an AAUW member for many years, first in Chicago and then later in Pasadena. In my spare time, I enjoy working out, reading, and traveling. I look forward to getting to know fellow AAUW members and getting settled in Portland. -- Study and Interest Groups (continued) Wimpy Walkers (open) First Friday or Saturday, 3-4 miles with breakfast/lunch Date: Saturday, May 6, 10:00 am Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden; lunch to follow Meet at the Garden s parking lot 5801 SE 28th Ave. Portland Note: There is a $4 entrance fee to the Garden Contact: Linda Stern, Date: Saturday, June 3, 9:30 am Portland Fountain Tour, luch to follow Meet at SW Yamhill between 5th and 6th Ave Contact: Kathe Hart,
9 Portland Branch Annual Business Meeting in Brief The meeting was held on March 18, 2017, at the Mirabella. Members heard reports from the treasurer, membership, public policy, and strategic plans leaders. *Membership has increased 30% over the past three years and is currently at 116. *Pay Equity is the main bill being followed by AAUW in this legislative session. *The STEM project, Girls Engage Technology, is in its second year and needs more volunteers. *PSU will continue to be an institutional member of AAUW and to collaborate on programs with us. *AAUW Funds and the PCC scholarship were supported generously. Elected to office were Linda Loftin and Sue Karstad, Co-Finance VPs; Carla Huegli, Study Group VP; Ginny McQueen, Membership VP; and Ann Copeland, Director at Large. Ann Copeland, Lisa Perrine, Sue Thomas, and Diane Winn were elected convention delegates. Important Bylaw Amendments were adopted, including having a President Elect with a 3-year cycle of one-year terms for the President Elect, President, and immediate Past President; and renaming Treasurer to Finance Vice-President and switching the election year with that of the Recording Secretary. AAUW of Portland Year-in-Review Our programs were the outstanding achievement of the year. They were on topics of great importance to women, were presented by experts, and were in collaboration with community institutions. We partnered with the YWCA, LWV, Women s Foundation of Oregon, the Oregon Women Veterans, Portland City Club, PSU and PCC. Programs were entitled We are Not Invisible, on the issues facing women military veterans; Families Climb Together, featuring original research on women s opportunity for social and financial mobility through education; Feminism: The Next Chapter, exploring intersectional feminism; and An Evening with Brenda Tracy, focusing on campus sexual violence and legislative action. Our STEM project, G.E.T., was in partnership with Saturday Academy and the Girl Scouts. We were a sponsor of Muslim Women in America, and had a informational tabled at PCC s Sexism in STEM. Our newly-designed website ( became integral for program information, links to organizations with similar goals, and branch membership. We have over 110 members again, thanks to our welcoming atmosphere, many study/interest groups and interesting AAUW mission-based programs.
