Can you name the woman that said the following famous words: That man over there says women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over puddles Nobody ever helps me AND AIN T I A WOMAN? Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted and gathered into barns AND AIN T I A WOMAN? (Keep reading to find the answer.) The Women s Equality Day event is August 26 with Denise Valenti-Hein, Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology). The Women s Fund Luncheon is on Sept. 10. The speaker, Liz Murray, wrote Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homelessness to Harvard. We have one table of ten attending but I would be happy to put together another table if ten more people are interested. FCA4PE (Fox Cities Advocate for Public Education) has been very active this summer. Rallies demonstrating support for public education were held in 6 communities. Participation was impressive. The next meeting is August 12 th (6:30 8:00, Appleton Public Library). The group is nonpartisan and shares part of AAUW s mission. There is a visible AAUW presence at these meetings. Will I see you there? Members have been asking me about the AAUW national convention. Over the course of four days I chose between numerous workshops, heard amazing speakers, networked with women from around the country, and learned more about AAUW. If you are really interested, you can go to the national AAUW site, open Convention 2015, and find summaries, power points, etc. from convention.. I will talk about Convention at our Sept. meeting. Two of the workshops I attended regarded finances. The IRS has really changed procedures for nonprofits. (Undoubtedly, you have heard Stepahnie mention this once or twice!) We really need to have our books in order. If you wonder about expense vouchers or other procedures, keep in mind this is IRS driven. (I am so glad we have good treasurers! The only thing that kept me awake during three hours of IRS/accountants/finance was the worry it worked up in me.) One of our panels was unbelievable. Two participants stood out. One is a young journalism student from Afghanistan and the other is a former NFL player. Noorjahan Akbar s intelligence, wit, and personality had us hanging on her every word. Don McPherson s post football career has him addressing groups regarding social justice issues. The topic of the panel was: What Does It Take To Make A Woman Leader? 2 BOOK SALE UPDATE! It is time to think "book sorting"! We will meet in the basement of the Atlas Mill every Tuesday morning at 9 am starting on August 4 and every Thursday evening at 6 pm starting on August 6. All are welcome. If this will be your first time coming to sort books, we will give you a short orientation to get you started. On Tuesday, August 4, we will celebrate the beginning of book sorting by having lunch together at the atlas Mill after we finish sorting for the morning. Hope you will join us! We are in need of paper boxes with lids. These can be brought to our room (behind door number 2) in the basement of the Mill. We're getting ready for the new AAUW year and you're invited! Join us at the September meeting for renewing friendships, reviewing what AAUW means to us and replenishing our activity lists. Come and sign up for the many opportunities to get involved and enjoy a delicious array of "heavy" appetizers. When: Tuesday, September 8, 2015 Where: First United Methodist Church on the corner of Drew and Franklin Streets Gather at 5:45 pm in the Fellowship Hall. See you there!!! CALLING ALL COOKS AND BAKERS Once again this year the September 8 Kick-Off meeting will feature heavy appetizers, sweets, and beverage. If you would like to share a favorite appetizer or dessert, please contact Nancy Havens, nhavens2@new.rr.com or Some of you have had the opportunity at Summer Mystery Book group to sign up to bring something. You need not contact Nancy again. However, we would welcome additional donations. The meeting is on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at First United Methodist Church, 325 E. Franklin St., Appleton. 5 Evening Book Group The evening book group meets during the day in the summer. The August book is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. On August 13 we will be meeting at the Timeline Saloon & BBQ (next to Doc s Harley Davidson) W2709 State Highway 29, Bonduel at 11:30 for lunch and then going to Carol s house, 135 N. Adams St. Bonduel, to discuss the book. Please let Carol, cebel@ezwebtech.com , know if you are planning on attending. Summer Mystery Lunches All at 11:30 a.m. on the following Wednesdays: Aug. 26 June 15 (2016) All members are welcome to join us once, twice, or thrice each summer. How it works: Each month there is a mystery book to read and an AAUW member-written mystery to solve (if you wish) which leads you to the mystery location of the lunch that month. Our last mystery for this summer is listed below. Book for Aug. 26: Murder at the Breakers by Alyssa Maxwell Discussion Leader: Judy Goodnight Watch for Mystery Lunch s in mid-august. Save the Date The Travel Group will be heading to Oshkosh on Saturday morning, September 12 th to the Paine Art Center & Gardens to see the Dressing Downton exhibit. It will be followed by lunch at an area restaurant. A flyer with details will be sent out soon. Travel group trips are open to all branch members. Guests are welcome.
