Our branch has more than 100 members again, all wonderful multi-talented and experienced women. Thank you for reaching out and sharing the benefits of AAUW with friends and acquaintances. We have so much to offer and are engaged in such an important mission. We know everyone is enjoying the friendships and activities of study/interest groups that stimulate our minds and enrich our lives. Our monthly mission-based programs have had excellent attendance and timely topics. Success of these programs has been due to excellent speakers and to our ongoing collaboration with the YWCA, League of Women Voters, Women s Foundation of Oregon and Portland State University. At its meeting in August, the Board adopted strategic plans in three areas STEM, fundraising, and college/university relations. We are happy to tell you that goals are being met in all three areas. The STEM committee reports that, in collaboration with Saturday Academy and the Girl Scouts, sessions continue to be in demand and that more volunteers are always welcome. The Holiday Luncheon was an enjoyable and rewarding fundraiser for AAUW Funds. Additionally, the Winter Wonder program sponsored by PSU Resource Center for Students with Children was an outstanding and successful feel-good activity. Continuing that theme, our branch program on January 30, 2 p.m. (see details in our previous newsletter or at the website aauwpdx.org) features speakers on the issues facing student parents and their children. These were identified as serious barriers to women s higher education by both AAUW s research and WFO s survey. Soon you will hear about fundraising activities for our local scholarship that goes to a returning woman student. As far as February who doesn t want to stay indoors on a cold day and watch a movie? Select a location near your home for Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines. It is certain to invigorate us to persist in our work toward advancement for women. Be sure to register for AAUW Lobby Day by February 9th. We all know that public policy is the arena where we must be heard and seen. We ll have carpooling to Salem and a fun and informative time! Co Presidents, Ilga Ross and Trish Garner VOLUME 17, ISSUE 5 2

3 WONDER WOMEN! THE UNTOLD STORY OF AMERICAN SUPERHEROINES traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, WONDER WOMEN! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society s anxieties about strong women. WONDER WOMEN! goes behind the scenes with Lynda Carter, Lindsay Wagner, comic writers and artists, and real-life superheroines such as Gloria Steinem, Kathleen Hanna and others, who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male-dominated superhero genre. The inspiration for the film came from a New York Times article that introduced Gail Simone (an Oregonian) as Wonder Woman s first female writer EVER. Here was this incredible feminist symbol who had always been stuck, like a lot of strong female characters, between being created by men and being primarily consumed by boys. From Wonder Woman s original, radical World War II presence, to her uninspiring 1960s incarnation as a fashion boutique owner, to her dramatic resurrection by feminist Gloria Steinem and the women of Ms. Magazine, Wonder Woman s legacy continues today. Who knew that the depiction of Wonder Woman paralleled the pursuit of women s rights throughout the twentieth century? To facilitate discussion of the film, small intimate group viewings will be conduced at several members homes. The following members have graciously offered to host a viewing at their home. Light snacks and drinks will be provided. The dates, times, hosts and addresses of the Twig Wonder Women meetings are listed below: February 4 (Saturday), 10:30am Ann Copeland 1221 SW 10th Ave (3rd Floor Meeting Room), Portland February 7 (Tuesday), 6:30 pm Suzanne Fleming and Linda Loftin 1500 SW Park Ave #212, Portland February 13 (Monday), 11:30 am (light lunch) Nadyne Rosin 5130 SW 39th Ave Apt 10, Portland February 16 (Thursday), 1 pm Sue Thomas SE Orchard View Ln, Damascus February 22 (Wednesday), 1 pm Mitsy Dunlap 8465 SW Schiller Rd. 6 Study Group Focus: Movie Mavens Do you love movies? Then Movie Mavens is the group for you. We meet on the second Friday of each month to discuss a previously selected movie. After the discussion, we choose a movie to review the next month. Sometimes we see a movie together, schedules permitting. In February we meet in the evening for our Annual Academy Awards Night. We enjoy drinks, snacks and great conversation. We meet monthly from 1:30-3:30 on the second Friday of the month in the Community Room of University Park Condos, 1500 SW Park Ave. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! We were not just enjoying a wonderful Holiday Luncheon in December, but many of us gave generously to the Winter Wonder program sponsored by Portland State s Resource Center for Students with Children! Because we only learned about this program shortly before the Luncheon, it was a challenge to get the word out. But our Branch came through we raised over $ in gift cards and received some winter gloves, scarves and so on. We wish all of you could have experienced the genuine appreciation that The Resource Center showed when the gifts were brought in. They assured us that our gifts would be put to good use. So, thank you Portland Branch and we plan to do this again next year! -- Judy Holt, Trish Garner and Ilga Ross VOLUME 17, ISSUE 5 6
