5 Education Report Bruce Hartley, Vice President/Education Chair Atlanta, Georgia the home of peaches, pecans, Coca-Cola, 1996 Summer Olympics, the Braves and recently the 2004 National Convention for ASDVS (American Society of Directors of Volunteer Services), Sept. 9-12, If you couldn t attend the national convention, you missed a great meeting. Missouri had a strong delegation with nearly 20 MADVS members attending. It was fun to I bump into friends from Missouri while in Atlanta. The convention kicked off with a keynote address from Hamilton Jordan, Former White House Chief of Staff from President Jimmy Carter s administration, author and four time Cancer survivor. Mr. Jordan challenged us to believe the idea that there s no such thing as a bad day. Over the next few days, sessions were offered on a variety of topics. I personally enjoyed sessions with information about student/youth volunteer programs with tips on working with different ages of people. I was reminded of the generation gap between myself and my two teenagers (age 13 and 15). Luckily, I learned a some tips on how to bridge the gap with both younger and older family and volunteers. Jeri Grimes and I was honored to share the 2004 Missouri CAVS Education Plan with AG (Affiliated Group) Leaders at the convention. It was thrilling to hear that our CAVS Education Plan is considered a Best Practice by ASDVS leadership this year. We reported that our 2004 Region Roundtables were complete and we have nearly 30 volunteer leaders registered to take the CAVS exam in Kansas City, Mo. on Jan. 24, The next step is to conduct a mock CAVS exam at Tan-Tar-A at the state MHA convention. The mock exam will be self-graded and reviewed as a group to see how we individually stand a few months before the real exam. The final step will be a group study session the night before the actual exam. We will have an old-fashioned cram session complete with snacks and drinks to make everyone feel ready the night before the test. We want everyone to be relaxed, confident and stress free. This has been a banner year for education in Missouri as are growing professionally from three CAVS in 2004 to nearly 30+ CAVS members in The MADVS delegation got together on the last night in Atlanta. Our President, Jeri Grimes organized dinner reservations at a local Italian restaurant (voted top eatery in Atlanta in 2004). Everyone had a blast and was able to hang out, eat and laugh. Thanks Jeri for organizing this fun night! Last, but not least, mark your calendar to attend our state annual convention, Nov. 3-5 at Tan-Tar-A. We have a strong line up of outstanding speakers scheduled. Don t miss the Wed. night TNT dinner out with tab covered by a vendor FREE food and TNT topics! Please tell your Auxilians that you have an official MADVS Dinner Meeting on Wed. night so they will understand ahead of time and not feel mistreated. You don t want to miss out on this dinner meeting. The CAVS Mock Exam is set for Fri. morning. This is the perfect time to see how you stand on your knowledge as a volunteer leader. This self-graded test is great for everyone, even those not taking the CAVS exam in Jan. This will help us evaluate ourselves against standards set by our national organization and will be priceless in our professional growth. As you can see, I am PUMPED and excited about our national, state and local professional organizations. I challenge you to be involved in a professional group and find ways to grow professionally. This will allow you to do your job better and will give you personal fulfillment beyond your imagination. Thank you for allowing me serve on the MADVS Board during God bless you all and remember to lead is to serve.
